    3. Hi Linda and Barry & listers B Station was on the Snowy River between Orbost and Jarrahmond. I don't know if it was on both sides of the Snowy or just one. Murray Goulburn store is on B Road - a name given by the surveyors to this section of the Jarrahmond Road. From memory there is a B drain flowing into the Snowy River in this vicinity. There is a Mitchell Road at Newmerella and a very early land grant was to a J Mitchell. There have been Mitchells in the area since the very early days and there still is today but whether descended from the originals or not, I cannot tell you. As to how B Station came by it's name, it's most likely as Linda said - one property with A paddock and B paddock, which later became two properties. I hope this is of some assistance. Regards Lori

Brodribb (the son, I presume) was part of a party delivered at Port Albert by the Singapore that rode overland to Melbourne. His first-hand account is published in "Recollections of An Australian Squatter 1835-1883", and is quite interesting. Off the top of my head, I think Lavinia married William Bennett and they had Hazelwood Station, south of present Morwell. From 1844 to 1847 that run was in the name of Albert Eugene Broadribb and William Bennett, although William Bennett held it on his own, apart from that time, from 1843 to 1860. There is also something in the back of my mind about Hazelwood being a family name of Lavinia's. But I could be wrong. :) Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

Hi Barry and List, I thought I had heard of a "B Station" for Orbost, but cannot find reference to it. It does not appear in either Pastoral Pioneers of Port Phillip by Billis and Kenyon, nor in Victorian Squatters by Spreadborough and Anderson. The practice of splitting stations was reasonaly common at one time (Hence there is a Glenfalloch A under the Glenmaggie Weir, no-where near what we know as Glenfalloch). This was to allow the squatters to use a loophole to maximise their right to take up freehold pre-emptive rights. Sir William Clarke, who held Orbost around this time, would certainly have used the practice if there was an opportunity. I have looked at my index to Personalities and Stories of the Orbost District by Mary Gilbert, and cannot find any reference there either, nor any to the Mitchells. 3. Hello all I have amongst my ancestors the family of Richard SIMS,who is my gg grandfather. Recently, I looked back through some records given to me by a cousin and found that she had noted: "There is a little book on the SIMS FAMILY HISTORY". Is there anyone out there who can help me here please. Richard was transpoorted to VDL, married Bridget LONG, moved to Omeo through Port Welshpool and Sale, where he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives. Richard died 1901 in Tongio, I believe, and was buried in the Omeo Cemetery. I would dearly love to find out a little more about the family's lives. Any sort of suggestion re availability or possible supplier would be very gratefully received. Regards Irene - EX GIPPSLAND,VICTORIA, NOW GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND Searching for:REES,LEYSHON-Wales. 3. Hi Listers The Bairnsdale baptism of Henry John Mitchell (the son), November 4, 1885, shows Henry John Mitchell's (the father) occupation as labourer and his abode as what looks like ' B Station near Orbost '. Does anybody know anything about this place or property? I have a scan of the relevant part of the document if anybody would like to have a look in case I am misreading the writing. I did the scan myself on my own computer but I cannot attach it to this email as our newsgroup does not accept scans as attachments. Regards for now Barry

One branch, still using the surname as CORIDAS, has survived in the Maffra/Victoria area as CORIDAS. If anyone knows of any such individual who is interested in their roots, please ask them to contact me. Thanks again to all who helped me. Gail of New Zealand

    3. I found the following on the Tasmania list sent to them by - Lauris Crampton <crampton@senet.com.au> I thought It may be of interest to our listers as we have Brodribbs in Gippsland. It is a name I am researching, however I am not sure if they fit into my research. "Williams Adams Brodribb was tried and convicted of administering unlawful oaths at the Gloucester Assizes (Lent Assizes) April 1816. William Adams Brobribb, who was the solicitor who was involved in the poaching episode by way of administering unlawful oaths to the participants while he himself did not go on the poaching trip, was tried and convicted of administering unlawful oaths to persons and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. His home was near that of Allen's and he knew the men involved. He was also sent to the Justitia being received there on 22 May 1816, he was aged 27 at that time. He left the Justitia on 5 September 1816 and sent to NSW on the Sir William Bensley. Whilst the ship was in Sydney, Governor Macquarie noted that Brodribb had been trained as a solicitor and he was then assigned to Lieutenant Sorell's party and sent to Tasmania. (Lieut. Sorell and his family also travelled out on the Sir William Bensley.) Sorell embarked on the Cochin on Thursday, 27 March 1817 for Hobart Town. Sorell's departure was hastened by the Administration in Sydney who felt that the settlement at Hobart was in a very parlous state and greatly in need of a sound governor. Brodbribb was also sent to Van Diemen's Land on the Elizabeth Henrietta and must have joined Sorell's party in Hobart. Brodribb was admitted to the bar in 1817, his family joined him in Tasmania in 1818. They travelled on the Friendship (or the Duke of Wellington) to Sydney, and thence to Hobart on the Duke of Wellington, according to the Hobart Town Gazette Supplement February 21, 1818, wife Prudence and 5 or 6 children, including eldest son also William Adams Brodribb and daughter Lavinia. The lived in Sandy Bay for a time. Later he moved to Victoria and spent time in Gippsland tutoring Lavinia's children. He died 1861 in Victoria. One of my ancestors (Lauris's) was involved in the 'poaching' episode and the above is taken from my file. The son William was a squatter who had several runs in Vic and NSW and travelled to England at least twice (I think) and addressed several influential gatherings whilst there. Dont know much about the son. It is reported that he went to the mainland because there was a better chance of someone with 'small means' making a lot of money! In Gloucester they lived near the Morteon area, which is up from Thornbury, on the road to Col. Berkeley's property on which the foul deed was done."

    3. Hi List, I have just been asked if we can help in any way to find the records of the Woodside Cemetery. In the 1970s they records were loaned to a newspaper to write about the cemtery, and were believed after that to have been handed to the then Alberton Shire. Several people have described the records, which were held in a recognisable shoe box. They do not appear to be any longer part of the shire records (I worked for a while in the new archives, and think, but only think, if they were there, I would know.) So has anyone heard of their whereabouts in recent years? There is talk of an anti-pylons rally on Sun 24th October which will visit the Woodside Cemetery and a number of other historic sites in the area. Further details will be posted nearer the time. At Darriman, four of the six men did not return. The Deputy is about to create a page on which Honour Roll and War Memorial transcripts can be stored. If anyone wishes to post transcripts to the list, or send them to me direct, they can then be added.
