Dear Vicki, I think it is great to post your look-ups to the list. You never know when that elusive link may appear, however remote. I thought I would let you all know of the find I had this week at the Latter Day Saints in Traralgon. I have been over there a few times and was under the impression they didn't have shipping records. They don't hold the INDEX but if you have your reference numbers ie. fiche-page, THEY HAVE THE FICHE. Not only was I able to get a photocopy (they charge $1) of the original entry, I found a birth and 2 deaths for my family the Harbourds,on board the "Delgany" in 1852. No wonder I couldn't find a death for Hortensia when I had her husband marring again! The birth and death registrations are set in the same manner as the Victorian registry so I virtually have $51 worth of certificates for the price of the photocopys and I have a mystery solved. I hope this will save some of you a trip to the PRO. Cheers, Kaye. Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Email: oretk@i-o.net.au
Seen again on the Tasmanian List - does anyone know the history of the name Brodribb River? "As a matter of interest there is a Brodribb river in East Gippsland in Victoria near the towns of Orbost and Marlo. Perhaps it was named after the gentleman in question? Regards, Graham Greenway in South Gippsland, Victoria." Regards, Ann Burnell
Sorry listers, I didn't mean to withhold information... At the risk of inundating the poor secretary with requests...here is the address for the Sale Cemetery Office for the information of all interested parties :) Sale Public Cemetery The Secretary PO Box 1418 Sale 3850 I suggest you send your cheque with your requests, Regards, Julie Simpson
> >Hi Elizabeth, > Having checked the death registration for Gavin Ralston, I >know he was buried in Sale on 3 February 1873. Can anybody tell me whether >there is a headstone and what is says? Are there any photos of this >cemetery? A few months back my husband and I went on a search of Sale Cemetery looking for his ancestors, it is a rather large cemetery though, so it is not an easy place to wander in search of that elusive grave. Sale Historical Society have a Cemetery Transcript of all the graves that have headstones, this would be by far the easiest was to find out. I did find the Sale Cemetery Office Secretary ( Lorraine Callahan) most helpful though, and for a modest search fee of $5 they will do a search for the specific grave and give you any details associated (including the cause of death if they know it) and anyone else that is buried in the same plot. I am not local to the area (I live in NSW) but I do have the address, and I know that it is more difficult for you since you are in the UK, so, if you do not have any other success from the people who have offered assistance, please let me know and I will order the search on your behalf, and email you the information. I also have a map of the cemetery, so it wouldn't be too hard to find the specific plot once we had a number and area ,and then perhaps someone else could go and look and take a photo if there is a headstone, or we could do it the next time we are down there. I would also be happy to send you a scanned image of the map if you want it. I won't send it until you let me know, I wouldn't like to cause you a download charge unexpectedly if you have to pay one. We are longing for the opportunity to get back there to follow up some research of our own. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Julie Simpson
Hi again listers, I would be interested in making contact with any descendants of (Irene) Gladys Bowditch (nee' Simpson) who are interested in sharing information about the Simpson Family History, and adding to the list of descendants from same. Also descendants of William John Simpson. All contact welcome Regards, Julie Simpson
Folks and List Manager, Just a query, when a look-up on the BDM's is done for a request on the mail list do you want it posted to the list or sent by private e-mail ? Have done a few but usually send them to the personal mail address as not sure whether they would be of interest generally ? Thank you for asking this vital question, Vicki. As it points out in the FAQ, this list is set up so that, by default, usually "reply to sender" goes to the list. This was set up this way in the assumption that we would be having discussions that would be of interest to other people on the list. Elephants spring to mind for some reason. Some people, however, can set their mail so that, by default, return mail goes just to them, and not the whole list. The rule is: if it is interesting discussion, likely to interest more than just the one recipiant, it should go to the whole list. If it is just a reply to a lookup request (and lookup requests should be restricted to Gippsland families, otherwise AUS-VIC seems to be the place), you should ALWAYS send the reply direct to the person asking, and not via the whole list. This also applies to general chit-chat, and questions about non-Gippsland names you might spot in signatures. Thank you for asking. :) Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ At 07:47 AM 04/10/99 -0700, you wrote: >Folks and List Manager, >Just a query, when a look-up on the BDM's is done for a request on the mail list do you want it posted to the list or sent by private e-mail ? I read in a book called 'Old Walhalla' by R Paull (page 89) about a coach coming across a bush fire between Toongabbie and Walhalla. Apparently the driver and at least one passenger, Arthur Ralston, tried to put it out. Can anybody tell me more about this story? I do not know when in 1884 it happened but would there be an article in a local newspaper? Can anybody help me out? Elizabeth Leicester, UK
Hi Irene No link to your Sims line but I am interested in possibilities re the Moore and Nolan names. My wife's great grandmother on one branch was Maria Nolan who married Donald McPherson at Stawell in 1864. Her great grandmother on another branch was Jane Moore who married James Anderson in Melbourne in 1854. I have a great great grandmother, martha moore who married George Malin, date and location (in YKS) unknown but c. 1834. If any of these are of interest I can let you you have further info.
