    1. [AVG] Re: B Station near Orbost

    3. Hi Barry, Linda and Listers This run was first taken up pre February 1851 by the Imlay Brothers from NSW - it was huge and stretched from the Snowy River east to the Bemm River and south to the coast. They called it Snowy River Station. The Imlays didn't stay long because the original inhabitants strongly objected to their presence. The next 'owners' were the McLeod's (brothers Norman and John) and they named it Orbost. After they had financial difficulties in the 1870's, the run was taken up by W J Clarke. He would have been the run owner at the time of your ancestors birth in 1882. It was known as Orbost Station - not to be confused with Stirlings 'Old Station' on the other side of the Snowy. There is plenty of info available about the McLeod's. The Station included some of the very rich Snowy River flats where maize, beans and numerous vegetables were grown as well as cattle grazing.. I don't know when the Jarrahmond part of the run was split into A and B sections. This may have been due to the Snowy constantly flooding and access to the whole property was impossible. 'A' Road led to the western side of the Station and 'B' Road came in it from where Orobst township would soon be. At this time there were very few people in the area and most of those would have been employed by Stirling on one side of the Snowy or by McLeod's on the other. McLeod's also had blocks on the other side of the Snowy. The Jarrahmond State School No 2745 was opened 13 March 1886 with Mr Walters as teacher. It was a half time school. Later John Rowe taught there half time and at Orbost State School the rest of the time. The first church service for the Bete Bolong community (immediately across the river from Jarrahmond) was held at the school. Mr Morton was a Presbyterian minister in Orbost from 1893 to 1903. He started classes for adult men at Jarrahmond school to help further their education. Orbost Station was subdivided and open to selectors - the first arriving in 1898. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance. The Mitchell at Newmerella was J W Mitchell but he doesn't get a mention in any of my books - I presume Mitchell's Road at Newmerella was named after him. I cannot see any other Mitchells listed as early settlers. Did you ancestors have any more children? Perhaps certificates for further children will give some more info such as how long they stayed in this area. If your write to the Orbost Historical Society, I'm sure they will be able to help you with further info. Regards Lori

    3. Dear Nadina, I had old proofs of my step-father when he was 19 or so, the light had got to them and they were very badly faded, I scanned them and adjusted them, making them darker, scanning at the higher dpi and they came up much better. Of course they could never be perfect, but they certainly were quite a bit lighter, try scanning them in the black and white mode and see how they come up. All the best, hope you have success. Regards, Bernie G.

    1. [AVG] Rabbits
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, I am reflecting on the subject of Rabbits. In my shed is the Poison cart operated by the Briagolong Rabbit Suppression League. Knowing what is was, I bought it at auction about five years ago to preserve it. I have just acquired, on loan, the minutes of that League, 1919-1923. The final entry is: "The meeting then closed at a late hour and the secretary was glad to get home and go to bed". Rabbits have always fascinated me (I have to admit that I am the daughter of a professional rabbit trapper), as have the politics of their spread. Rabbits crossed the Divide into Gippsland in 1896. Maffra and Avon Shires were still at each others' necks after the split 25 years before, and wouldn't co-operate on suppression. The Gippsland Rabbit Suppression League was therefore totally ineffective, could not agree on anything (even if there were rabbits there, in some cases) and was disbanded in September 1902. No-one on the flats around Stratford would believe that rabbits were in the Avon Shire, until one of the councillors slapped one down on the desk in front of the Shire President at a council meeting in 1903. Anyone got any family rabbit stories???? I talk every two months on the local ABC, and am running out of topics. Rabbits sound like a great subject for the end of November. Turn right up the Orbost to Buchan Road, and you are as good as in Jarrahmond. I would have said this is due east of Lakes Entrance. It grew GIANT pumpkins. >From "Vision and Realisation" (the index to which is only by school name), School No. 2745 opened 1886, half time with Orbost, which opened at the same time. First building erected on the bank of the Snowy River, moved 1892 to McLeod's Lane. New building erected in 1914, remained open until 1949 when a bus service began to take children in to Orbost. Building transferred also, and is still part of Orbost Primary School. The huge pumpkins (along with others from the Orbost Flats) are featured in photographs by Orbost photographer Helena Warren, where they were hollowed out and you would have multiple children floating in them on the Snowy River. Helena also did genuine trick photos, where she would have, for example, one pig filling an entire cart, one maize cob filling an entire cart, men at a saw bench cutting huge wheels from corn cobs etc. Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

    3. And Murmungee is approx halfway between Beechworth and Myrtleford. Omeo has an Historian working with their Historical Society. Think her name was Diana but I might be making that up. If you can find her she may be able to help with the footy team. I was born in Omeo - and burned out in the Black Friday fires of 1939. 3. Hello Listers, I have been given several pages of information re my Flynn family [all of which tallies with my own research ] from a new found cousin, [origin of info unknown]. One piece, however is new to me and I would like to know if any list member has heard of the Contract Shipping Scheme mentioned in the following :- John Flynn sailed from Liverpool at 7am on the 27-9-1866 on the "Royal Standard", and arrived in Melbourne on 14-12-1866. He was aged 23 years and came as a Warrant Passenger. Warrant Holders embarked under a Contract made between the Government of Victoria and Messrs Lorrimer, Marwo0d and Rome, of the Colony. Warrant dated 1-6-1866 - no.1423. Would appreciate any clues as to where I could follow up this interesting piece, as I have not been able to pin point who is my John Flynn on the several I have found on shipping records. I find this list very interesting. Patricia

    3. Dear Bruce, I have found the following method of help when the writing is faded or badly copied. I scan at 600 dpi, make the image darker and zoom in a little. The scanner should pick up any image even if faded, and by darkening the image just a tad, you will enhance the faded image, give it a shot, you have nothing to lose. I found this worked really well on photocopied images taken from microfilms that were not the best. Regards, Bernie Green.

On the back is the notation S.S. >Murmungee, any clues any one? ========================================================== The best source of information on Victorian schools, Gippsland and otherwise, is "Vision and Realisation: A Centenary History of State Education in Victoria". This is a huge, three volume set of red books still to be found in most state schools in Victoria. I bought mine int he 1970s when they were being remaindered by the Govt Printer at $2 a volume, they are now over $100 each! It gives potted histories of all schools in Victoria. Murmungee (Reg no.997) opened in 1869 on the main Beechworth to Bright Road, and closed in 1963. The accounts often name the local correspondent when the school opened (the person who wrote letters), some teachers etc. Unfortunately it is not indexed. 3. Hi Barry I will get out my books on Orbost area over the weekend and get back to you. The Museum and Historical Society in Orbost was still active when I was last in the area. Write to them at Nicholson St Orbost and they will probably be able to tell you a lot more than I can. Jarrahmond is not a town today - just an 'area'. I don't think it was ever a town but I may be wrong. It's not far out from Orbost north along the Snowy River. Bye for now Lori

How can I find more information about this Station? Where exactly is Jarrahmond, it does not appear to be on my map? Are you able to tell me more about this J Mitchell who had the land grant? Mitchell is a fairly common name, but when you start to get matching surnames and initials and regions it does start to get interesting doesn't it? Regards again from Barry
