    2. Ann Burnell
    3. Dear Listers, WLittle103@aol.com is trying to find the place of burial of her Great Aunt Catherine O'Rourke nee Curran. I have rung Springvale Necropolis on her behalf (as she lives in USA) and there is no record at Melbourne General Cemetery on June 22, 1946. Could skp please look at Warragul Cemetery for her? She was born c. 1861 in Ireland. Perhaps married to Dennis O'Rourke. Parents - Michael and Bridiget Curran. Regards, Ann Burnell

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Just to announce that the Deputy has been busy, and Morwell War Memorial has now been added to the AVG Homes pages section on war memorials. And, just to save having these announcements all the time, he has now added a "What's New" section fairly high up on the main page - just so you can check what has been added since you were there last. The AVG home page is at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

M.J.Affleck at Warragul on 24 June 1946. Her husband was Denis O'ROURKE and she was a widow in 1946 when she died. The above may be "extra help" for the skp that offers to look further!

    3. Good morning Listers, I have been sitting in the background for some time now getting tips and ideas for a family research that I have for a long time wished to start. I have contacted family members and am slooowly getting some information that I can compile. My question/request to the list is, firstly to advertise the names I am starting with (the latest generations) and as I am now a resident of QLD ask any other lister who live away from Gippsland and Melbourne how they go about "official" searches for information of residents of Victoria. On a personal note I find this list very informative and a good place to get tips "from the experts" and also stories about a place I still hold so dear. 1. [AVG] Museums page on AVG
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, I have just finished an inspection with the Regional and Specialist Museums Advisory Committee of the excellent museums at Foster and Port Albert. It has reminded me that many people do not know, for example, that Lassetter was at Corner Inlet before he went to where-ever he went looking for his reef. His workboat is at Foster Museum. We were talking about light-houses a while ago - and the Cliffy Island Lighthouse workboat is at the Port Albert Maritime Museum. If you want to know more about some of our local museums, you can check Australiam Museums on Line, at http://amol.org.au/ For some there are even have photographs of local items. (Ignore what they have done to mix up the Stratford items!). Through the same site, at Open Collections, you can search a number of collections. For example, there appears to be a huge collection of show ribbons in the Museum of Victoria from the 1930s that include shows at Maffra, Bairnsdale and Sale. And lots of details of local photographs at places like the Gold Museum in Ballarat. Some of our museums appear in the Wellington and East Gippsland Shires pages in resources, but those elsewhere in Gippsland do not have a listing. So I thought I might add a museums page to the AVG home page - details of any museums are welcome. Please feel free to name any gems in the collections that you think we should watch out for when we visit. 1. [AVG] MacDonald Family
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, This message is posted on behalf of Lori at loribyn@corplink.com.au because she and I are having a bounce problem. Cheers Linda - ------------------------------------ John MacDonald came from Baleshare, an island off the coast of North Uist, near Inverness, Scotland. He selected land in the Genoa River area about the mid to late 1880's. He took over the block after it had been thrown open to selection and after it had been forfeited by people named Cousins. At the same time he also took over a block on the opposite side of the Genoa River to Smith's (now DeGeus property) forfeited by Gilian. His son Lachlan MacDonald, lived there briefly when bark stripping. In 1900 he (John) went to Gabo Island as head lighthouse keeper but retired in 1915 to live on his selection 'Inverness Farm' at Gipsy Point. He was a noted bagpipe player, a stickler for correct Highland dress and, so it is said, a distiller of Scotch whisky. (Another book I have said he retired in 1903) R Cameron built the MacDonald cottage with the help of two MacDonald sons, Lachlan and Tom. Later this cottage was removed by John's son in law, Leo Coco. Mrs MacDonald was drowned during the record flood of 1919. She was washed away from a wrecked dinghy. John was also swept away but was noticed by some people at Gipsy Point and Ray Kiernan and Tom MacDonald jumped into a row boat and saved him near Cape Horn. MacDonalds work shed was also swept away. John MacDonald owned the boat 'Lightning' and used her when travelling between Gabo Island and Gipsy Point. MacDonald children: Lachlan married Nellie Smith, Tom, Lea married Ned Smith, Catherine married Leo Coco. Lea and Ned moved to Cabbage Tree Creek. John and Hannah are buried at Gipsy Point cemetery. There is also a Flora Ellen MacDonald buried there in 1930. Leo Coco was buried there in 1963 and his wife Catherine in 1978. Land was set aside for the Gipsy Point cemetery in 1912 and Hannah MacDonald was the first person to be buried there. I trust this is of some help/interest. Regards Lori

    1. [AVG] Howlett
    2. Ann Burnell
    3. I am trying to find a John Howlett who very kindly on 17 April 1999 sent me a Ged-Com file of his family history. I am delighted to have the information and would like to discuss it with him. Unfortunately in a recent computer upgrade his e-mail address was lost. Hope you are still out there John. Regards, Ann Burnell
