Hi List, The Deputy has been at it again, and has uploaded one of my old lists - all known service personnel from WWI from the former Maffra Shire. It incorporates war memorials and some honour rolls from Maffra, Heyfield, Glenmaggie, Briagolong and Tinamba. To find it go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ and click on Resources and follow the link from there. Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/
Thanks for your input Lesley and Linda. I know the Shingles were brickmakers in Maffra. James and Mary Ann Shingles (nee Price) married in 1853 and lived in the Brunswick area of Melbourne before settling in Gippsland in the late 1860s - first Sale, I think. They were in Maffra by about 1874. My interest is really confined to a single and more recent branch of the family - that of Herbert James SHINGLES (1889-1915) and Grace Celia HEWAT. They married in 1911 and two children - Nina May (1911) and Keith Herbert (1913-1939) - were born in Maffra. I don't know whether they remained in Gippsland, though ........ Grace married William GILES (also from Maffra, I think) in 1918 and was living in North Fitzroy when she gave birth to Marjory (1917) and Doris (1918). If there are any SHINGLES researchers out there, I'd be very interested to learn about the circumstances surrounding Herbert Shingles' early death in 1915. The Fire brigade act was established 20 December 1890 Re collapse of the land boom; 1-5 May 1893 The Government proclaimed five bank holidays as a result of four banks and other financial institutions having stopped payment. However this did not prevent the suspension of five more of the associated banks regards Brian - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This email server is running an evaluation copy of the MailShield anti- spam software. Dare I say it (and long-term members on the list will understand!!!!) that the Shingles family are long-term brickmakers from Maffra from, I think (give or take ten years), about the 1870s. :) Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ ============================================================ At 07:35 PM 12-11-99 +1100, you wrote: >Hi Victoria, > >Not related to them but knew well a lot of the various Shingles >families in Maffra. Just to thank those kind folk who answered my recent query. Glad to hear there are still koalas to be seen in Foster (a rare sight in my area) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Hello list, Found at the local second-hand bookshop a hardcover copy of the book Sale: the Early Years and Later, by OS Green, pub. Southern Newspapers, Sale, no date, price $29. (Don't know if that's reasonable or not). If anyone has been searching for a copy, please e-mail me and I'll send it along. Kathy
Hi Linda I was browsing through the papers from Sale and came up with the following item. I have checked the home page for 1874 and noticed that it's not included. 17 September 1874 The new bridge over the Wanngatta at Waterford is completed and having been passed by the Government Inspecting Engineer is now open for traffic. I hope I got Wanngatta right as it was a bit hard to read. Hi listers While reading through the Argus in 1905 I came upon a column of points on Dairying. It mentioned different farmers. There is an entry for a James McKenzie Llance, near Yarram . If anyone is related to this person I will send a copy of the article. Regards Carolyn
There's one hotel only in Foster, The Exchange. It's undergone some changes since the 1950s but still looks the same outside. Haven't heard about anyone feeding koalas in the town recently but they are a common sight and sound in the trees along Stockyard Creek and in the magnolia tree outside the Foster Post Office. Cheers Shirley
Hi, list! Visits to Hawthorn Bank can be arranged through the Port Albert Maritime Museum Tel/Fax 03 5183 2520 or Delia Nicol 03 5182 5264 Why not make a day of it, inspecting other historic sites too - such as the Port Albert Maritime Museum, Christ Church at Tarraville, St John's Church at Port Albert, Wood Cot Park, Alberton Cemetery and the Port Albert Immigration Barracks - and sampling the best fish'n'chips in Australia at Port Albert? Look forward to seeing you! John O'Callaghan
With such a wealth of local knowledge on this list, I'm hoping someone can assist in identifying a hotel in Foster. All I know is that someone who was there in the 1950's describes the hotel as built around an open courtyard where gum trees grew and customers could feed the resident koalas. Appreciate any help. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
