    3. Sunny Creek is now only an area, and is situated East of Yarragon and South of the Highway, The old school house is now situated at Gippstown Folk Museum at Moe I believe. There used to be a creamery there as well and the Sunny Creek area extended down to the Moe Swamp. Regards,Bernie G

    3. Hi Peter I like your idea, from my point of view I have been researching my ancestors ( Merritts & Johnstons) living in the Kongwak, Welshpool, Toora area, and have a mind to visit the district (I live in N.W. Victoria). This could tie in very well having the multi purpose to clean up a historic site in the area, meeting like minded people as well as checking out the district my forebears lived in 100 years ago. 1. [AVG] Clean Up Australia Day proposal
    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Hello fellow AVGers, I was thinking that it would be nice if subscribers to the AVG used the opportunity of the next Clean Up Australia day (which is 5th March 2000) to clean up some of our historical sites in Gippsland. It would provide the opportunity for us to put something back into the community, to beautify and preserve areas of historical significance, and a chance to meet other subscribers. If possible I would like to organise at least one, and possibly a number of, sites in Gippsland for March of next year, and to either redo them in the following years (if necessary) or proceed to new sites. It is intended that this will be done under the auspices of the Clean Up Australia committee which provides some support and insurance. I am writing this letter to gauge the interest and support that other subscribers have in this type of project. So I would like to hear from you (preferably on the list) whether you think the idea is worth pursuing and whether you think you would be available. My initial proposal for a site is 'The Springs'. This was a stopover place on McEvoys track that went from Seaton (Bald Hills) to the gold towns of Jordan, Jericho, Matlock and Woods Point. It was the only permanent water on the track as the track followed the ridges. The place is a lovely grassed area of some 2 hectares complete with an old lichen covered orchard that consists of fruit trees that would have been planted last century. Last time I was there (hello Shirley and Barry) it was a bit of a mess with garbage such as bottles and tins around it, loose pieces of corrugated iron and discarded furniture, and some half buried stuff such as steel cables. If possible I would like all the rubbish to be collected and placed in one pile so that somebody like the DNRE could collect it later. The Springs is about a half hour drive north of Seaton/Heyfield on a good gravel road (which passes the famous Murderers Hill always mentioned by Edwin Maher in his ABC TV weather reports). It is also a half hour drive NE of Walhalla on a narrower winding mountain gravel road, which is still suitable for a normal car (with care). If you have any comments on the idea in principle and would like to tentatively volunteer, I would like to hear from you on the list. At a later date I will call for people to nominate their proposed sites and depending on responses nominate organisers and call for volunteers. This proposal has the support of the Linda the list administrator, and if successful a page will be set up on the AVG website to help co-ordinate it. Regards Peter Lakeman

    3. Re SUNNY CREEK - John Adams in "So Tall the Trees" (1978), page 66 states: "Sunny Creek was another promising township but it failed to develop because of the proximity of its larger neighbours.". On page 67, Adams continues: "Sunny Creek, named in contrast to the nearby Shady Creek, cuts a course from the Strzelecki Hills in Trafalgar South and enters the swamp west of Trafalgar. Here in 1876 a reserve was marked out for a township at the point where the railway crossed the creek. Blocks of between 8 to 12 or more hectares were laid out, and made available for settlement from October 1879. Some 27 houses were built here in the form of a village settlement ... There had been a fervent hope that a station would be erected here but the close handy villages of Trafalgar and Waterloo [Yarragon] prevented such a move. Consequently Sunny Creek had little opportunity to develop into a full scale township as intended ... The hopes for a station went on into the 1880s ... Eventually in 1891 the Railways erected a siding about 1 km west of the original station site on the creek. The siding still exists today as a widening of the Princes Highway about halfway between Trafalgar and Yarragon ..." Walter Savige

    3. Linda, Sunny Creek is on the Princes Hwy approx 3 to 4 kms on the Yarragon side of Trafalgar. There was a creamery there in the early days. My ancestors William Henry Matthews and his wife Sarah, together with their five children Susan, Edwin, Henry, William and Annie, settled there on a small acreage in the late 1870's, having moved from Drysdale on the Bellarine Peninsula, presumably encouraged by the fact that new tracts of land were opening up. Many descendents of the family now live in the Trafalgar?LaTrobe Valley area. Be interested in hearing from anyone with any knowledge of the family The old Sunny Creek school building is now part of the "Gippstown" display at Moe. 3. Hi List, The Deputy has just added two significant new pages to the AVG Home Page. They are a list of Gippsland Newspapers held in Gippsland (find it through the resources page) and an 1874 description of Gippsland and its towns, with a list of pastoral runs, holders and other details such as stock on the run. It can be found in the Library section - if anyone has any articles that they would like to add to the library, please e-mail me privately. It may be that you feel like writing a short history of one of our towns, for example, to go in our library. 2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Just a couple of List Admin thingos. Maree asked: why do i keep getting unsubscribe emails , i would like to stay on please???? maree ============================================================ For you, and for others that may be interested, the reason these messages appear on the list is that people are trying to unsubscribe from the list, but mistakenly use the posting address to send their unsubscribe request to rather than AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-L-request@rootsweb.com or AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-D-request@rootsweb.com (whichever is appropriate). As such, the computer just sends it out to the list as if it is a normal post. They shouldn't really occur, but they do on all lists. We are not all experts, and there are a lot of beginners out there. As a reminder, a lot of information, including how to unsubscribe or how to change between list/digest modes was explained in the 'welcome' message everybody received when they joined the list. If they have lost that message, it is on the 'FAQ' page on the support website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ In other words, just ignore them. It is only when you get an email saying 'you have been unsubscribed', that you need to worry. *grin* ========================================================== Returning messages: Just a reminder, which I send out every now and then, that if you are sending one-line comments or enquiries back to ONE person, that you should do it off-list by typing in their address, rather than sending it to the whole list. If the message is of interest to the whole list, please check that you have highlighted and deleted the majority of the previous message, rather than sending the whole, large message back to the whole list or digest again.
