Lorraine Key, The book "The Path of Progress" (1934) by Hugh Copeland relates to early selections in the Warragul district. It was reprinted with an index in 1982. The name Clark does not appear in the index. Yhe book "Buln Buln" (Drouin, 1979 - 794 pages) by Graeme Butler covers the area north, west and south of Warragul. The names T.J. Clark and G.M. Clark are not shown in the index. The book "The Changing Years" (1972 - 60 pages) by Marie Nation, Joyce Erbs et al (1972) relates to the Hill End, Willow Grove and Fumina Districts. There are several boioklets relating to Nilma, Darnum and Ellinbank - e.g. "Lillico - Nilma North" by L & NN Centenary Celebration and Reunion Committee (undated, probably about 1980 - 60 pages). There is no index. I regret that I don't have time to look through it for your Clarks. I would advise you to find out where your Clarks were living (e.g. from early directories or electoral rolls). Next, identify the land parish (from Municipal directories), and then check the Schedule of Allotments for that parish (Vic Government Bookshop) and find the position of the allotment in a parish map. Note the file number of the allotment, then visit PRO Laverton (or employ a searcher) and photocopy all documents in the file. These should include the origfinal application of the selector for an occupation licence, an application three years later for a Crown Lease (which provides an enormous amount of information about the dwelling, crops, etc) and all letters sent to the Lands Department by the selector. . You ask; "Have you researched Savige/Savage at all?'. Members of the Savige family have been interested in the history of the family for many years. Reference to the history of the family is made in "There Goes a Man" (1959) by W.B. Russell - a Biography of Lieut-General Sir Stanley G. Savige (who served his country in two World Wars and was founder of Legacy). On page 13, reference is made to two branches of the family in Gippsland - 'the Hill Saviges' (descendants of Thomas Savige and his wife Annie Powell) and the 'Swamp Saviges' (descendants of John Savige and Emma Russell)..[John and Thomas Savige were brotrhers who selected land in the Narracan hills in 1877-5. Thomas and Annie lived out their lives at Narracan, while John and family moved to Moe in about 1885.] In May 1961, in order to mark the 90th birthday of their father Albert (Bert) Savige, Russell Savige and his sister Meryl Jackson of Moe organised a family gathering of all Savige descendants at Narracan Falls. Over 500 descendants attended and pages of pictures were shown in the "Weekly Times". The reunions have been held triennially ever since. The 13th reunion was held in March of this year, and some English and American relatives came over in order to attend... Several books relating to the history of the family have been published - the first by Ronald Murray Savige in 1966. Mrs Margot Titcher later continued the research into the early history of the family in southern Northamptonshire, and I teamed up with her following my retirement in 1980. Our most recent book is "Savage-Savige" (1996). Walter Savige .
Just to say a really big thank you to those great folk who responded to my query. In particular, to Walter Savige for his detailed and interesting information. Thank you all very much, your help is appreciated. Kathleen Dacey ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Hi All, Can someone tell me where I could purchase "So Tall the Trees" as is sounds like a good book to have? BTW, I am in Brisbane so purchase of book might be difficult. Regards, Betty Freeman.
I am involved in preparing these maps at the Maffra Resource Centre; they are intended for tourists who want to get off the main roads but who don't have the local knowledge needed to avoid getting lost. At the moment we are concentrating on central Gippsland (because we live here and because we've received a bit of funding); eventually we hope to cover the whole of Gippsland if further grant applications come good, but this will take some time. In the meantime, any feedback would be welcome. No Dianne Colleen had a brother Bruce but he wasn't even born at that time. Her father, Fred, and her older brother, Kith, were the two family members involved in the droving bit. Fred married Myrtle Smith, daughter of Harry, a well known identity around the Bairnsdale saleyards untilhis death some years ago. one of the tworobbos ----- Original Message ----- From: Dianne Carroll <omeo@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 1999 11:43 PM Subject: Re: [AVG] OMEO - TAYLOR > Peter, > Is this a connection to the McPherson that contracted polio as a child and > died several years ago. Kath, I have found some more info re your Conley forebears. Miss Grace Auchterlonie (my much loved aunt, now deceased) wrote a history of the Thorpdale - Narracan district in 1956 at the request of the Country Womens Association. (The district was originally known as the Narracan district. The township of Thorpdale was not founded until after the coming of the railway in 1888.) Aunt refers to the opening of the Narracan School in 1878 at the Narracan Mechanics Institute, which had recently been built (on the eastern side of McDonald's Track opposite the site of the present War Memorial at Narracan East), "with a roll of ten pupils. The number soon increased to twenty, some coming long distances along bush tracks through the timber . . . A family named Conley of three boys and one girl came from what was then known as the Little Narracan, a part of which was later known as Narracan Park." That would have been quite a hike (past the site of my childhood home), followed by a steep descent to Trimm's Creek and then a steep cliimb on the other isde. Also, I have an aerial photo of Thorpdale (taken about 1970) including the Conley property and will scan and email it to you by JPEG if you wish. Walter Savige.
Kathleen Dacey, The Schedule of Allotments (obtainable at Vic State Government Bookshop) for Parish of Moe (Sheet 1) shows that the title for Allotment Number 84 of 47.75 hectares was transferred from the Crown to E. Conley on 27 April 1888. You should be able to find Francis's original selection claim and all relevant documents and correspondence in Land Selection File Number 4284/19.20 (Melbourne District) at Vic Public Record Office, Cherry Lane, Laverton. The Moe Parish map shows the position of the block There is a four-way intersection about one kilometre from Thorpdale township on the Trafalgar Road.. Go west along Cooks Road, across the Little Narracan Creek, then a short distance up the hill. The block is on the left. My cousin lives there now - Mr Stanley G. Savige, Thorpdale, Vic 3835 - a very friendly man. I can find no reference to your Francis in "So Tall the Trees". He might be mentioned in a book by Jim Tlgner: "A Brief History of Thorpdale and District" (Mirboo, 1976). My copy seems to be temporarily misplaced. Failing that you could write to Jim - Mr J.R. Tilgner, Thorpdale Road, Thorpdale 3835. He is also very friiendly. Walter Savige

Kathleen Dacey, "So Tall the Trees" by John D. Adams, FRHSV (published by Narracan Shire Council in 1978) is "a centenary history of the southern districts of the Shire of Narracan" -the area between the Latrobe Valley and McDonalds Track, including the Moe, Trafalgar, Yarragon, Thorpdale and Allambee districts, Copies of the book were still available a few years ago at the Narracan Shire Office, Trafalgar. However, the Victorian shires were recently rearranged and renamed and I do not know the names or boundaries of the new shires or the location of the shire offices. "So Tall the Trees" is widely regarded as an excellent publication. It includes a description of the herculean efforts of the early selectors in converting a large part of the heavily forested Strzelecki hill country into farms. One presumes that the name given to the book reflects the fact that when the first selectors arrived in about 1874 much of the district was covered by a forest of huge trees. A Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus Regnans) tree which once grew beside Mcdonalds Track at Thorpdale South is acknowledged in the Guinness Book of Records to have been the world's tallest tree. "So Tall the Trees" complements an earlier publication "The Land of the Lyre Bird" (Shire of Korumburra, 1920) - "a Story of Early Settlement in the Great Forest of South Gippsland", relating to settlement in the mid to late 1870s of the area south of McDonalds Track. This classic work includes chapters written by the selectors themselves. Walter Savige

Once again, I am hoping for some help from the good folk of Gippsland. I am wondering how or if I could find information on Selectors in Thorpdale. In particular, I am looking for a Francis Conley who was described as a Selector in Thorpdale from 1876 to his death in 1889. He apparently caught the train from Thorpdale to Moe but died the next morning in the Club Hotel Moe where he was staying overnight. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

According to 'The History of Gold Discovery in Victoria' , James Flett names the Moe Swamp as Sunny Creek on p 141. "Gold, tin and rubies were found in a tributary of Trafalgar Creek in June, 1876, and there were new gold discoveries in 1877, which the diggers refused to make public. In 1878 diggers were working on Sunny Creek (Moe Swamp), and a company, the Pioneer Co., built a race on Couchman's Creek. There were then 75 diggers working in the Traralgon division." Cheers Shirley
