Hello I have a photo taken by Eastwood Brothers, Portrait Parlours, Main Street Bairnsdale. The lady in the photo ( if the family have her named correctly) would have lived in Bairnsdale from 1885 until her death in 1894. 'The Mechanical Eye" tells me p156, that Eastwood brothers started operating in Bairnsdale in 1899, prior to that Frank E. Eastwood and Frederick Eastwood are listed separately 1888-89. This leaves a 10 year gap. Does anyone have any further information on the years that the Eastwood brothers were living in Bairnsdale and taking photos, in particular what years were they at Main Street Thanks Marcia Penny Geelong
Yes, they still live in Korumburra. Try Bridge St. Shirley
Try the Baw Baw Shire Offices at either Warragul or Trafalgar, if copies are still available these would be your best bet. 03 56242411. Regards, Bernie G.
Dear Linda, could you check if any mention is made of Johnston in the diary or Sidebottom. Thank you for your efforts, Regards, Bernie G.

Hi List, I have just picked up a copy of "folie a deux: William and Caroline Dexter in Colonial Australia" for $25 from Traralgon newsagency. It is by Patrick Morgan, and is 173 pages. It details the life of a couple who lived in Stratford and were involved in Sale for some time, and as such several chapters provide an interesting picture of Gippsland around 1860. There is also some interesting reflection on Angus McMillan. Publisher is Quakers Hill Press, 6 Caper Place, Quakers Hill, NSW 2763. Hi List, I have just picked up a copy of "Secrets of the Ghost Towns of the Mountain Goldfields" by Luke Steenhuis. This is a more professional print, and considerably updated, of the version that was around a few years ago as a photocopy. It should not be confused with his other book, "Secrets of Ghost Towns of the High Country". The sub-title for the new one is now "Featuring 50 Former Towns in and around Melbourne's North-East Mountain Region" I picked my copy up for $17.95 in the Traralgon newsagency, I assume it is around in other outlets. It is distributed by Australian Bush and Country Maps, Ph 03-5964 7011. It is 92 pages, profusely illustrated with maps and quite a few photos I haven't seen before. For those unfamiliar with Luke's books, they take the form of an alphabetical list of the towns, usually one to a page, sometimes with an old map, somethimes with a photo, sometimes with both. It does have an index. Towns and areas in this book are shown below. Many of the towns have so many alternate names it is not possible to list them, but they do appear in the index. Hello Vivienne, Not a lot, but the wrench family ran a footwear business in K'Burra, for over 100 years in fact up until the lest couple of years. Jack Wrench unfortunately sufferred a stroke a few years ago and died in the last 3 years. Mary(nee McKenzie) was a neighbour of mine at Mardan South [1948-1956] and I understand she is still resident in Korumburra. bfn John Vivienne Caldwell wrote: > Hi list > > Does anyone have any connection with the Wrench family who settled in > Korumburra in the 1880s, previously living at Sofala in New South Wales? > > Viv > -- > Vivienne Caldwell > Wollongong NSW > http://www.zip.com.au/~viv > > ==== AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND Mailing List ==== > This list is set so that, by default, when you use the "Reply to Sender" option, replies go to the WHOLE list (about three hundred people). Betty Freeman, Another lister also asked about where to purchase "So Tall the Trees" and I replied only two days ago (25 Nov). I stated that copies had been available for purchase at Shire of Narracan Office at Trafalgar a few years ago, but the shires have since been rearranged. I had hoped that some "clued up" lister might have known in which new shire the old Shire of Narracan is now included, but there has been a deafening silence. My guess would be the Shire of Warragul. I suggest that you try the Warragul Shire office. Walter Savige.

Hi LIst, Several of you have asked where to purchase books such as "So Tall the Trees" by John Adams. If you go to the AVG Mailing List Home Page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ and go from there to "Links" you will find two on-line sites that search a number of bookshops. All you need to do is put in Adams as an author. I often go there and browse with a subject of "Gippsland" and it is amazing what you can find. > It's early days yet, and only covers Central Gippsland, but keep an eye on http://www.stripmaps.com > Useful for those away from the area having problems working out some towns. also keep an eye on the Project 2000 for information towns in Victoria and Australia at: http://www.zades.com.au/ozindex/ozindex.html and some basic info for those that have forgotten what it's all about: Members of the Bellarine Historical Society in Victoria, and residents of the towns of the Bellarine Peninsula have commenced a major project to document the history of their local areas on the Internet. These histories include towns, buildings, families, schools, environment - in fact any subject which adds to the history of the Bellarine Peninsula. These are not all encompassing histories and certainly do not replace the need for researchers to visit or contact the Historical Society and other local repositories for more detailed information. The purpose of these histories is to increase the awareness of the depth of history on the Peninsula and to encourage further research into local archives. This local project generated a lot of interest and requests from other groups to expand the project - initially in Victoria, but more recently across Australia. It became obvious that there was a need to :- provide a comprehensive index of existing histories of places in Australia expand the number of histories on the Internet of places in Australia assist others who wanted to contribute to this project but were not sure how to go about it. The end result is PROJECT 2000 - a special project adopted by the Melbourne Dead Persons' Society (DPS). The aim is to have a history of every location in Australia on the Internet before the year 2000. so check out the above web site for your town or area.....it just may be there. cheers, Leone
Lorraine Key, In my message I neglected to mention that the PRO is moving from Laverton to North Melbourne. For Information about obtaining records, see their website - www.prov.vic.gov.au Re land parish maps - I should point out that it is sometimes difficult to find out the locations of parishes, and the boundaries sometimes undergo change. The annual publication "Municipal Directories of Victoria" should be consulted. The name of the parish is not always the same as the name of the town. My impression is that the Warragul area north of the railway line comprises the Parish of Drouin East. To the east of that is the Parish of Darnum, extending to about Shady Creek. Further east again is the parish of Yarragon which includes the Trafalgar - Moe Swamp. The Warragul area south of the railway line comprises the Parish of Warragul, extending to Yarragon. The Parish of Moe comprises the districts of Trafalgar South, Moe South, Thorpdale and Thopdale South, including the upper Narracan Creek. The parish of Narracan comprised the area between McDonalds Track and the Morwell River, extending to the Latrobe River and part of Moe township.. The Lillico - Nilma North book I mentioned includes copies of photos of a number of Nilma North school groups which include children named CLARK - for example, Allie and Pat Clark in 1930 and 1932. Also, the Honor Roll for the 1st World War includes the name N. Clark. There are a number of references in the book to families named CLARKE (with an "e"). I failed to find entries for your CLARKs in the indexes of the following books - "Victoria and its Metropolis", Volume 2 (1888). "Forests Old Pastures New - a History of Warragul", by Sally Wilde (1949). I also had a cursory look through "Warragul - Progress through a Century" by Warragul and District Historical Society (1982, unindexed). What were the names of some of the children of your T.J. and/or G.M. Clark? I once knew a Harley CLARK of Warragul. Walter Savige
