Hi everyone (says I cringing sheepishly and so very embarrassed). You see, I was so excited about my death certificate find I actually sent my message to the wrong list. Hope you all found the story interesting anyway. Cheers, Jan Shaw, Listower: AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES Email: jbs@nex.net.au Transcriber for FreeBMD at Rootsweb
Hi everyone, Oh my God, you won't believe what just happened. I'm so excited I can't contain myself. I was just about to ask for some information re the above subject, and decided to look again at a copy of a death certificate I received last week I hadn't paid much attention to the spares also listed on that certificate when I first received it but this time a name caught my eye. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Would you believe listed right underneath my Lucy McKenzie's death information is the details of her daughter, also Lucy, who died 20 days after her mother of Puerperal Eclampsia. Both buried in the same cemetery as well - Tharanbegga. I am in shock. I could have put this document away for a while until I got around to posting the spares to this list, and never known I had this information until then. What an absolute bonus. I would never have sent for Lucy Jnrs. information as my husband is not from her line but from one of her sisters. Anyway thought I'd let you in on the excitement. Cheers, Jan Shaw, Listowner: AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES Email: jbs@nex.net.au Transcriber for FreeBMD at Rootsweb

Dear Walter Thankyou very much for the information you sent. I appreciate all I can get on this family and especially any references to Joe Kidd, he is my ggrandfather, and his life like most undoubtly has many little mysteries. I am fortunate enough to have alot of photos of the family that had at one stage belonged to Joe Kidd quite a few are of the Standings and their descendants eg. Webbs. Joe Kidd apparently gave his bullocks bell to George Webb would love to know if it is still in the family. Thanks again for your response Regards Michele Deering http://www.vic.australis.com.au/sdeering/index.htm EMAIL sdeering@vic.australis.com.au ICQ.# 46641156

Michele Deering, The book "The Changing Years" by Joyce Erbs and Marie Nation is out of print, and you would need to be lucky to pick up a second-hand copy. Your best bet would be to look at the book at a Gippsland library or the State Library - OR borrow one from a relative. Some WEBB descendants such as Mr Trevor Colbert are stated in the book to have been residing in the district in 1972. There is a paragraph about the Webb family on page 22, also scattered references and two photos, but very few references to the COOPER family. There is a small photo of Mrs. H.A. Cooper (nee Sarah Webb) on the last page. I have scanned the main paragraph about the Webb family and will paste it below - "WEBBS. The first Webb in Hill End was Thomas senior, who came with his wife and grown family about 1895. Some of his sons selected blocks on Sandy Creek Road (Farrells Road). Thomas, and Joe Kidd, his brother-in-law, had been bullock drivers. They had had many lucrative hauls, including loads of stores and machinery to goldmining towns. A load from Melbourne to Walhalla would fetch £l00 ($200) a ton. They had teams of sixteen bullocks and when they reached the "Glue Pot" at Brandy Creek, unyoked one team to attach to the other waggon, thus using 32 bullocks to haul the load through, returning for the other load. One of Thomas' sons, Charlie, married a widow with four children, Mary Bloxom (nee Bell) and they. farmed on her block on Camp Creek Road. Charlie selected other small blocks in the area. They were burnt out in the 1906 fires. Rebuilding and milking cows, they were once again burnt out in the 1939 bushfires. Alf Webb, who had married Isobel Williams, grand-daughter of Hector Lamont, was farming there then. The remaining family went to Trafalgar and the property was used for dry cattle only. In 1958 Francie Colbert, daughter of Alf, returned to the property with her husband and three children. They built a new cowshed and later a house, previously living in a small house built on the property by Jim Lord. Francie is farming there now with the help of her younger son Trevor. Her elder son Gary was killed in a tractor accident a short time ago." On page 25 it is stated that C.T. and A.J. Webb both served in World War I. On page 27 there is a photo of Charles and Mary Webb. I could send you a scan if you wish (JPEG?). On page 31 there is a photo of Charles Webb with his steam engine used for driving the first sawmill at Hill End. On page 21 the authors state: " ... we must reluctantly omit some stories from the many collected for time does not permit us to include them all ... one must be content to include original settlers whose families are still in the district - Hitchins, Bloyes, Espies, Webbs, Rees and Pauls." Patricia Bates, Pat - I am replying on the List to your message because I feel that the subject could be of wide interest. I have not been able to locate a photograph of your ancestor John Bates, but there is a reference to him in "The Changing Years" - an excellent publication by Joiyce Erbs and Marie Nation (1972) - a History of the Hill End, Willow Grove & Fumina South Districts. You may have already seen the book. On page 2 is shown a sketch of the three early "runs" - Hill End, Tangil Hills and Red Grass Hills. On page 2-3, it is stated: "Throughout a period of 24 years, the three runs were leased by many different people, until Red Hills was abandoned in 1872 as being uneconomic. The other two continued (reduced in size) for some years after that - Tangil Hills being confined to the area bounded by the Tangil and Latrobe Rivers and the Tanjil Track (now River Connection Road. Some time before 1860 a homestead was built on Tangil Hills, on a rise overlooking the Tanjil River, at what is now Tanjil South . . . A hundred years ago, Hill End was occupioed by David O'Shea, and Tangil Hills by John Bates. Gold prospectors were very active all through the area, but mainly around Russell's Creek and Tanjil . . " Sadly, Joyce Erbs (my much-loved youngest sister) has since passed away, but Mrs Marie Nation or another member of the Centenary Committee might be able to locate a photo of John Bates or a member of his famil y.. Hi Marcia and List, Eastwood Brothers were very active! It operated at various times as the Exchange Photographic Rooms/ Establishment (1885) and the Bairnsdale Portrait Rooms (also 1885). That was brothers Frank and Frederick. It appears they opened for business in April 1885 in oposition to Lancaster. In June 1890 it was reported they were selling out to Gardiners (who did then operate in Bairnsdale) and moving to Omeo. They then operated for a time in Day Ave in Omeo. In Feb 1893 they returned to Bairnsdale and operated again from Main Street until at least 1900. Gardiners left Bairnsdale in 1893. Hi Linda and List My apologies for the long delay - perhaps you will recall some time ago I mentioned that a relative had written a children's book titled 'How the Rabbit came to Australia.' It has finally arrived - beautifully copied and bound and I am thrilled to have it. BUT.......... It is strictly a fairy tale and tells of the adventures of Mr and Mrs Bunny arriving with Arthur Phillip and their daughter falls in love with a convict bunny! Etc etc. Not quite what we were looking for. Apparently my relative wrote and illustrated the story for his own children and his siblings children and whilst it was not published, he did have it printed. Sorry - I can't help with your project after all. Regards Lori
Hello Listers, Would a lister be able to tell me anything about a school named " THE COTTAGE ", please? My late mother, BEATRICE CARSON, told me she went to school at WATER HOLES, via DEPTFORD, would this be the The Cottage? She would have been aged about 13 in 1914, and lived for a time with the MC DERMONT family [not sure of the spelling]. It would be great to have information about this piece of our history. I have not found Beatrice on the microfiche of the East Gippsland school's. Patricia Bates.
Helene, the only Britannia Creek I am aware of is near Warburton in Yarra Valley see http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ncas/multimedia/gazetteer/list/brittcrk.html for some more details. I used to go there as a boy when I lived at Powelltown cheers Stephen
Good Afternoon all, My next door neighbour is researching the History of Lang Lang and has discovered a photo of the 1920 Lang Lang Football Club Premiership team. Their opponents on that day were a Team from Britania/Britannia Creek. I have looked up the Australian Gazetteer with no success.I would imagine that this team would have been in the South Gippsland area. Can anyone please suggest or know where Britannia Creek may have been. Thanks Helene Helene J Hayes Pakenham Vic helenh@nex.net.au
