    3. Hello Linda, Thank you and the helpful lister for info about East Gippsland Schools, very much appreciated. I have a lot of trouble getting on the internet, the line keeps dropping out, due to electric fences, does anyone know of a " thing " I can install to prevent it happening. It is so frustating, not to mention expensive !! Love reading all the bits, it's great. Patricia.

    1. [AVG] Ship Wreck
    2. Peter Davis
    3. G'day List I believe that my g-grandfather Henry Burleigh Davis was a sailor and there is a family story that he was shipwrecked off the Victorian coastline between 1844 and 1855, tho most likely it was in the 1840's. One version of the story has it that he was on the "Isabella" when it was wrecked in Bass Strait in July 1844, all of the crew and passengers survived and were returned to Melbourne on the ship "Flying Fish" a few days later. I know quite a bit about the wreck of the 'Isabella' and for a number of reasons I'm starting to doubt the truth of this version of his shipwreck. I suspect he was on an entirely different ship. The following is another account of Henry's shipwreck experience as told by Alfred J.C Taylor, grandson of Henry Burleigh Davis. "After being shipwrecked, they started off across country coming out at Frankston, but on the way they were short of provisions and killed an animal for food. An old boundary rider saw them, classed them as bushrangers and sent word on to Melbourne, where the survivors were met by the police and charged with being runaway sailors. The ordeal of the survivors was soon accepted and they were permitted to leave." Does anyone recognise this story? If so are you able to give me any idea of what ship they may have been aboard. If they arrived in Frankston I presume the wreck was somewhere off the Gippsland coast. Thanks Peter Coffee Camp Northern NSW

    3. Linda I, for one, will be disappointed with the change. While, so far, not having had a great deal of success in advancing my research interests, I have learnt a lot from being exposed to the queries of others and the subsequent replies to the list - many of these latter extend knowledge of the original query quite extensively (e.g. 'B' Station). Many of the exchanges have been extremely interesting and, when collated into a single document (rabbits and pademelons were two examples) have provided a great deal of pleasure for myself and spouse - who is not at all computer literate but interested. 3. Wow - you know I wonder how often we do put things 'away', with no more than a glance, anly to find later on how valuable it was. I had a similar experience at the library yesterday. Was asking for info and our conversation - me and librarion - turned right at the lights, Suddenly he was recommending a source book about wheich I had really just minimal interest. ANyway, I borrowed it, and would you believe, found the complete family of my G Grandmother. The book, SS Great Britain, contains an overview of the ship and a bit of its history in the first fe pared. The rest is passenger list. And writing this, I have just realized her mother was my GG Grandmother - that makes 3 of my GG Nanas accounted for. Serendipity, they call it, bloody marvellous, I call it. 3. Pat, now that Linda has replied I know I can add a little bit too. Waterholes Road is still there, it runs off the road to Deptford and is not far from the Clifton Creek school. I had friends who lived just off Waterholes road. It finishes at the Nicholson River, but the general area is called Waterholes by the locals. It is about 25 minutes by car from Bairnsdale and there is a magnificent view of the distant mountains. It is very bushy with lots of hobby farms and just folks living in the bush. Lots of old farms in the vicinity, and old old homes, often at the rear of new, quite substantial homes. I will ask a friend of mine whose folks still live in the area if they know any residence, or for that matter, any place known as the cottage - my friends lived in "the bark hut", so no doubt 'the cottage" will be a cinch ? 3. Hi Pat and List, This school would probably be "The Farm" school, No. 3481, near Waterholes, north of Bairnsdale. It apparently opened in 1904, and in 1911, when Waterholes school closed, its furnoture was moved to The Farm. It closed in December 1919. Waterholes, No. 3529, opened in 1907, and operated for some time with Clifton Creek school. I have not seen records for either The Farm or Waterholes. However Clifton Creek is still open, and published a substantial history. I would suggest you contact them and see if they can assist.
