    1. [AVG] Frederick William HOLMES & Christina SMITH
    2. Debbie Down
    3. Hi List! I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to give me some suggestions on how to find out more about the above listed people. They are my great grandparents but have been the bane of my genie research for many many years! Frederick William Holmes and Christina Smith were married in the Bairnsdale Registry Office on Dec 21, 1907. Frederick was aged 27, a labourer, says he was born in Braybrook, resided in Iguana Creek and that his parents were unknown. Christina was aged 25, home duties, says she was born in Lilydale, resided in Iguana Creek and that her father was George Smith, a mason. The couple went on to have 4 children Ruby born in 1908, Isabel in 1910, Frederick William in 1911 and Margaret in 1915, the first 2 in Bairnsdale and the second 2 in Yarragon. Shortly after Margaret was born, Frederick is believed to have walked out on the family (did he go to war??) never to be heard from again. Christina and the 4 children moved to Yarragon at some stage. In 1919, Christina died at the Amhurst Sanatarium of tuberculosis aged 35 and is buried at Amhurst. Death Certificate states that her usual residence was Yarragon, her parents were George Smith and Christina, that she had married at Farmbank aged 22 to Frederick William Holmes and that there were 4 children of the marriage. I have tried over the years to find a birth for both Frederick (sometimes also known as William) and Christina to go back a little further on this line, but to no avail. There was a story that Christina's father, George owned land in Sale but I am not sure on this. Sorry this email is so long but if anyone can offer any advice or information or perhaps are related (well it is Christmas and miracles happen sometimes!!) I would really love to hear from them. Merry Christmas to all Debbie Down

The best eye-witness accounts are the transcripts of the Stretton Royal Commission into the fires, held in the Royal Commissions series at the PRO Vic. I THINK the Commission sat at Omeo. The down side is that the Commission was mainly interested in how the fires started, and was focussed more on the rural areas and milling areas rather than towns such as Omeo. So the best source for towns is still the newspapers of the time. There is a book with a title similar to "The Week the State burned" by W.S. Noble, which I do not have to hand at the moment. It may well have material on Omeo. Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

    1. [AVG] House fire (during WWI period) in Pakenham area ?
    2. Ken Black
    3. Hi I was hoping that someone might have some information, or access to newspaper records, which might shed some light on the following: My G.Grandparents Thomas and Margaret Black (and their seven sons) had apple orchards in the Pakenham/Pakenham Upper area in the early 1900's, and when 4 of the sons went of to serve in WWI (and apple prices dropped), the family's newly built 2-storey house was forced to be sold at auction, and mysteriously was burnt to the ground a couple of weeks later. If there is any record of the auction and/or fire, I would dearly love the details (I believe that there is a 'Black Lane' running off the Pakenham-Gembrook Rd? and it was possibly at the end of this that the house stood). Regards Ken Black

    3. Hello everyone - let's all hope for a safer season this summer. But it is that black day I want to ask about. Can you lead me to a local, Omeo focussed account of those fires? I was 7 months old at teh time. My home was completely destroyed, and my parents saved nothing except an armful of clothing which my father dived into the wardrobe adn grabbed. After he could see again, he realized he had his dinner suit and 3 of my mum's evening frocks. Very handy! Not even my safety pin! Anyway, I have read accounts of the State's worst fires, but wish to find a local account, focussing specifically on my birthplace. (We never returned). I still have in my possession a meat platter from the dinner service which came from the Bush Fire relief people of the day. Hope someone from this list will point me in the right dierction. I wish you all Good fortune, good health, happiness and safe keeping. Cheers, Nandina nandina@alphalink.com.au

    2. Irene Rees
    3. Hi Dianne and other listers I wish I could join in the New Year's Muster, but it is a little too far to hitch a ride. When I think that, for thirty three years we lived in the Latrobe Valley, during which time I was too busy with hubby, children and work to take an interest in my family's history. After we moved up north and after both my parents died, I took up genealogy for a hobby and, of course, was well and truly bitten. I have found heaps of direct antecedents from Omeo (Sims), Beechworth (McHenry) and Myrtleford (Rath). Maybe one day I will be able to come to Omeo and wander through the cemeteries. I have quite a deal of information about my Richard SIMS, but it is not the same as seeing things. Good luck with your Muster. I hope the weather is kind and that you have heaps of interested and interesting people there. 1. [AVG] Info sought: domestic servants who immigrated to Victoria
    2. Cooper, Brigid
    3. [please excuse cross-postings] Do you know someone who immigrated to Victoria to work as a domestic servant after 1900? The Immigration Museum is undertaking research on this topic. (see below for more details....) If you have any photos or information, please contact Sue Doyle Image Researcher sdoyle@mov.vic.gov.au (03) 9927 2734. Details Monash University and the Immigration Museum are currently developing a publication to commemorate the economic contribution of immigrants to Victoria in the twentieth century. It will contain text by academics from Monash University supported by lots of photos. Whilst the project team are keen to include the many aspects of immigrant women's work, this can be difficult, so far as photos and personal stories are concerned due to the lack of records. Some of the most elusive materials are those that relate to the lives of domestic servants earlier this century. Advertisements and promotional material are available, but this is little to indicate how reality matched expectation. 3. Hi listers, This is rather a long story so I would appreciate a reply direct from any Gippslanders who may be able to help. I am Jack Lang's nephew and Jack's mother was Mary Whelan. She arrived in Victoria shortly after her brother Dennis, who later settled - and died - in Bairnsdale. He was unmarried. I have a few details about him which I would be happy to pass on to anyone interested. But here is my main problem. Dennis had a sister Margaret who lived with him for a while. In one of Jack Lang's books he mentions going to stay with Uncle Dennis and his auntie sewed money into the hem of his coat before he returned to his family in Sydney. Is anyone willing or able to find any details about Margaret for me? There are a few shipping arrivals that could fit but I can't find a death or a marriage. Any Lang or Whelan researchers down there? Frank Cardiff East Gosford NSW

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Have been a bit quiet for a while, as have not really been able to look at a computer for about the last five weeks for any length of time. Now about to get back into it. I am going to update the Wellington page on the AVG home page, as I discovered I did not have Donnelleys Creek, Store Point and The Springs in there as names. In fact, the only names I do have are for places which have had schools. Thus, not all that long ago I found I did not have Bushy Park in there. It was the site of the Angus McMillan homestead, had a post office and railway station, but no school. The three above I left out because I did not realise they were in Wellington - Store Point is about 500 metres into the shire. So does anyone else have examples of names that are disappearing off our maps??? I have to do something at the shire, as the latest Land Victoria map has failed to include Glencairn and Castleburn, among other places. I am happy to add names to the pages for East Gippsland and Wellington that you can find through Resources on the AVG home page on http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ and Claire, who is working on a LaTrobe Shire page might like to hear some suggestions about names in that shire that are disappearing. We are still looking for someone who might like to "adopt a shire" for Baw Baw and South Gippsland especially. You might like to e-mail me privately if you would be interested.
