Hi List, Just a slight correction about the Sale Rate Books, in case anyone rushes letters off hopefully. The Wellington Shire hold all the rate books EXCEPT the former City of Sale Rate Books, which are at the Sale Museum. Details of that can be found on the AVG Home Page by going to Resources, then Wellington locations. The rate books the shire holds are at the Yarram archives, and there is no formal research service. The best option is to write to the Yarram Genealogy Group (see also Wellington locations for details) and pay the appropriate research fee to have someone go to the archives. Hi Sandra I don't remember if I replied to you or not, but I kept your email, so perhaps not. For the information regarding old rate books write to Wellington Shire Council Princes Highway SALE 3850 They will then look up their old rate books for you. Hoping this helps and if I can be of further assistance let me know. I live in Sale. warmest wishes Kate Yesterday is the past. Tomorrow is the future. Hi list, This is my first posting and am hoping for some connections re the above names. Most will be in the area from Trafalgar to Sale. I am interested also in schools, trying to find out when my father, Arthur Edmund Jones and his parents, William and Martha ( Munday ) Jones left Tasmania and arrived in Trafalgar. My father told me once he remembered coming over on the boat and was he thought about 8 yrs. He was born 1900. They settled in Seven Mile Rd. Trafalgar, so I guess he and his siblings ( Jones's and Kenny's ) would have gone to the Trafalgar School. The families stayed in and around that area, my parents were in Sale in 1939 when I was born, I visited some rellies ( Brodribb ) about 12 months in Trafalgar but unfortunately memories tend to fade as one gets older so not much information gathered. Any information greatly appreciated. I do have a few indexes and file for the states of Aust except Qld, Sth Aust & NT. Will gladly lookup any names for you. Kind Regards Bev Murwillumbah NSW
Hi List, The Deputy has been at it again - the photo gallery on the AVG Home Page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ has been re-jigged and now features an exhibition of five mountain cattlemen's huts beyond Licola that disappeared well before 1950. Thanks Dep. Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/
Just a short note to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. And to say thank you for making this such a great list. My thanks also go to Peter, the Deputy, without him there would not have been a List, let alone a Home Page. We seem to have been a little quiet over the last week, as we frantically rush around with last minute preparations. I hope you all have some time to share with family and friends over Christmas. And I hope Santa fills your Christmas stocking with lovely historical books or CDs. If you are out on the road, please be careful. My father always said to me, when he taught me to drive on some winding Gippsland roads, that "you may know what you are doing, but you can bet there's an idiot around the corner who doesn't". May the Peace and Joy of the Season be with You, and all Year Round. Hi List, I have just collected an early copy of the Gippsland Times "Millenium Issue", "Wellington Region: Our History", which will be distributed next Tuesday, although it bears the date of 1 January 2000. And many, many congratulations go to Peter Synan, who was historical editor, no doubt with the able assistance of Ann. It is the first attempt to publish a comprehensive history of what is now the Shire of Wellington. It is 96 pages, on high-quality newsprint, tabloid size and is extensively illustrated. Around about half is adds and half serious historical articles, but even the adds are fascinating as most have taken the trouble to detail the history of the business. The major articles are: the Gunai-Kurnai, European Exploration, Port Albert, Yarram, Migrants, Sale, Transport, Wars, RAAF Base, Gold, Oil and Gas, Racing, Closer Settlement, High Country, Heyfield and District, Stratford, Maffra and District, Rosedale and District, Swing Bridge. It will be available in all newsagents in the shire on Tuesday - check with your local newsagent for Bairnsdale and Traralgon. Otherwise you can order it from the Gippsland Times at 74-76 Macalister Street, Sale, 3850. It costs $4 an issue, plus post - possibly around $2.50 would cover that. It would also be remiss of me if I did not point out that, in the original discussions, the Times considered commissioning work, but I understand the final agreement was that historians would work gratis, in return for the Times having more of the paper microfilmed. So this is a double gift that the Times, Gippsland's oldest operating newspaper, has given to the historical community. It has done so to mark its establishment in 1860, and first issue in 1861 - 140 years of operation. David Tulloch, general manager of the Times, who has driven this, as he has many other historical projects, is also most deserving of our gratitude for this wonderful issue. Now, who is going to index it??? Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/
Hi List, I have just picked up my copy of "The Wonnangatta Mystery: An Inquiry into the Unsolved Murders" by Keith Leydon and Michael Ray. I got my copy at Collins in Sale for $25 (well, $24.95, but who is counting???). It is published by Warrior Press, Box 549 Mansfield 3724, ph 03-5779 1599, and is 134 pages. I have to admit this isn't really a review, as I haven't read it yet. At a glance it appears to have a few new photos, and as the authors have long had a fascination with the subject, I assume they have some new theories or angles to advance. I have just about lost track of how many books there are now, of various probitity, on the 1918 murders at this remote cattle station north of Crooked River. Cheers
Hi List, It appears there has been some sort of glitch at Rootsweb, as three messages I sent about fifteen hours ago failed to get through. I am about to send them again. If anyone else has sent messages in the last 24 hours or so that have failed to come through, I suggest you try again. It seems to be working now. :) Merry Christmas again Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/
Hi List, I have just received the nicest of Christmas presents - some Charles Hammond postcards. Charles was a brother of H.B. Hammond, long-time photographer of Maffra, and lived in Sale for a short time around 1906. He made a living as an artists, specialising in horse paintings. His postcards are Australiana paintings, all I have (six!!!) showing horsemen. Now, if anyone is rumaging in junk shops over the holidays and happens to find No.3 in his bushrangers series (I have 1, 2 and 4) I would really love to complete the set. They are black and white postcards, and dated 1907. Merry Christmas to all. No 407 Collins st was the home of the collins house group of companies out of which came north broken hill, western mining and a host of other companies. This is probaly the connection to the blue jacket mine.
I am not sure exactly what was at 407 Collins St but cn assure you that it wasn't the Melbourne Club. That establishment was 'top' end of Collins St and was in the loe numbers - probably around 50. > Hello everyone - let's all hope for a safer season this summer. But it is that black day I want to ask about. Can you lead me to a local, Omeo focussed account of those fires? > Hello Nandina, My husband, Peter, who works for the CFA (training) in Dandenong and is also a volunteer member of Hastings Brigade has 'State of Fire - a history of volunteer Firefighting and the CFA in Victoria' by Robert Murray and Kate White, Hargreen Publishing Co, Nth.Melbourne, 1995. With regard to Omeo, it has several references and a photo of the main street after the fire. It gives a good report of the Royal Commission, and especially the difficulty the country people faced by the Forest Commission's refusal to carry out, or give permission for, controlled burns. As regards local accounts, I would suggest you contact the Omeo CFA who like most brigades would keep reports. A local newspaper would be a good source also. Try the newspaper room at the State Library in Melbourne.
