    1. [AVG] La Trobe Shire pages
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Just to let everyone know that, due to the hard work of Claire Wood, there are now two pages on the AVG home page for La Trobe Shire. These are a locations page, which gives details of the shires and areas that went to make up the La Trobe Shire, and an excellent bibliography, by town, of published histories. To access it, go to the AVG home page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ and from there to "Resources" I would like to thank Claire on behalf of everyone, for a wonderful lot of information that is now available to everyone. We now also have a volunteer for South Gippsland Shire who is starting work on information for there. Anyone interested in West Gippsland, Bass Coast or Cardinia????? 1. [AVG] Frederick William HOLMES & Christina SMITH
    2. Debbie Down
    3. Hi List! I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to give me some suggestions on how to find out more about the above listed people. They are my great grandparents but have been the bane of my genie research for many many years! Frederick William Holmes and Christina Smith were married in the Bairnsdale Registry Office on Dec 21, 1907. Frederick was aged 27, a labourer, says he was born in Braybrook, resided in Iguana Creek and that his parents were unknown. Christina was aged 25, home duties, says she was born in Lilydale, resided in Iguana Creek and that her father was George Smith, a mason. The couple went on to have 4 children Ruby born in 1908, Isabel in 1910, Frederick William in 1911 and Margaret in 1915, the first 2 in Bairnsdale and the second 2 in Yarragon. Shortly after Margaret was born, Frederick is believed to have walked out on the family (did he go to war??) never to be heard from again. Christina and the 4 children moved to Yarragon at some stage. In 1919, Christina died at the Amhurst Sanatarium of tuberculosis aged 35 and is buried at Amhurst. Death Certificate states that her usual residence was Yarragon, her parents were George Smith and Christina, that she had married at Farmbank aged 22 to Frederick William Holmes and that there were 4 children of the marriage. I have tried over the years to find a birth for both Frederick (sometimes also known as William) and Christina to go back a little further on this line, but to no avail. There was a story that Christina's father, George owned land in Sale but I am not sure on this. Sorry this email is so long but if anyone can offer any advice or information or perhaps are related I would really love to hear from them. Thanks in advance Debbie Down

    1. [AVG] Patrick Wilson
    2. I've had a query from a person not involved with this list regarding a Patrick Wilson, born in 1841 at Maffra; enquirer says there is a family tradition that he was "the first child born in East Gippsland" but at that early date I'm inclined to think that the reference may be to Maffra in NSW. There is supposed to be a connection with McMillan through his father John Wilson, listed as "labourer", though he may also have been a bullock driver. I'd appreciate any help/suggestions. Yours, Jeremy Hales Look me up at www.maffra.net.au/jjbpage.htm

    3. Hi List, Am sending this article on someone may like to give to Historical Society for me. Researching: MUNDAY, BRODRIBB, JONES, KENNY, ASHBY Reagard Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: Lauris Crampton <crampton@senet.com.au> To: <AUS-Tasmania-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 1 October 1999 3:36 AM Subject: Re: Brodribbs Williams Adams Brodribb was tried and convicted of administering unlawful oaths at the Gloucester Assizes (Lent Assizes) April 1816. William Adams Brobribb, who was the solicitor who was involved in the poaching episode by way of administering unlawful oaths to the participants while he himself did not go on the poaching trip, was tried and convicted of administering unlawful oaths to persons and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. His home was near that of Allen's and he knew the men involved. He was also sent to the Justitia being received there on 22 May 1816, he was aged 27 at that time. He left the Justitia on 5 September 1816 and sent to NSW on the Sir William Bensley. Whilst the ship was in Sydney, Governor Macquarie noted that Brodribb had been trained as a solicitor and he was then assigned to Lieutenant Sorell's party and sent to Tasmania. (Lieut. Sorell and his family also travelled out on the Sir William Bensley.) Sorell embarked on the Cochin on Thursday, 27 March 1817 for Hobart Town. Sorell's departure was hastened by the Administration in Sydney who felt that the settlement at Hobart was in a very parlous state and greatly in need of a sound governor. Brodbribb was also sent to Van Diemen's Land on the Elizabeth Henrietta and must have joined Sorell's party in Hobart. Brodribb was admitted to the bar in 1817, his family joined him in Tasmania in 1818. They travelled on the Friendship (or the Duke of Wellington) to Sydney, and thence to Hobart on the Duke of Wellington, according to the Hobart Town Gazette Supplement February 21, 1818, wife Prudence and 5 or 6 children, including eldest son also William Adams Brodribb and daughter Lavinia. The lived in Sandy Bay for a time. Later he moved to Victoria and spent time in Gippsland tutoring Lavinia's children. He died 1861 in Victoria. One of my ancestors was involved in the 'poaching' episode and the above is taken from my file. The son William was a squatter who had several runs in Vic and NSW and travelled to England at least twice (I think) and addressed several influential gatherings whilst there. Dont know much about the son. It is reported that he went to the mainland because there was a better chance of someone with 'small means' making a lot of money! In Gloucester they lived near the Morteon area, which is up from Thornbury, on the road to Col. Berkeley's property on which the foul deed was done. Apologies to the list for the length of this post. Lauris >On arrival in Tasmania he was assigned to Mr. William Adams Brodribb, >Junior, at Black Marsh in the Bothwell area. Does anyone know the >Brodribbs? They have been mentioned in a couple of books. > >Thanks >Alison Briggs > ==== AUS-Tasmania Mailing List ==== Ausflag - Tasmanian Flag, picture and history http://www.ausflag.com.au/flags/tas.html

    1. Gippsland Times Heritage Edition
    2. Peter & Sandra Beckett
    3. Just want to say what a fantastic effort has gone into the Gippsland times Heritage Edition - Wellington Region - Our History. Lots of well researched articles on just about all aspects of local history by well known historians gave me at least three hours of reading over the New Year. It's obvious that much time and planning has gone into the paper, only pity is it's not a book but a newspaper and so more likely to be used to wrap the vegie peelings. (My copy is going into the library of Mornington Peninsula FHS). Well done to all concerned. 1. [AVG] Clean Up Oz day (update)
    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Fellow AVGers, Today, we went for a drive to 'The Springs', which is the place I nominated as the inaugural AVG Clean Up Oz day site, and confirmed that it still needs a cleanup. My estimate is that half a dozen people will clean up the site within 3-4 hours which will allow a bit of time for lunch, socialising and maybe further exploration. Some members of the Stratford Historical Society have expressed interest in joining in, which is most welcome So I will contact the Clean Up Australia Day committee next week and start to organise it officially. I would like to hear from any subscribers (directly, at the eddress below) who may be available to assist on the day (5th March 2000), so that we can start to organise the event. As this site is in the mountains of Gippsland, if any other subscriber would like nominate/organise another site in west, south or east Gippsland under the same umbrella, please contact me asap.
