Hi all Judy Jerkins has asked me to pass on her thanks to you all. She is not going to subscribe again just now. Instead Judy plans to finish some of the jobs which were waiting for her, and will remain off air for a while to take control of her living family for a change. Judy apologises for any inconvenience anyone had as a result of her computer virus infection - especially distressing when she did have an antivirus programme operating. Even the virus detector which warned me of her virus, did not find the virus on Judy's machine. In case anyone else has similar problems, Judy was advised to try the free Anti-Virus program available from Computer Associates (called InoculateT Personal Edition) from http://www.cai.com and this programme found and disinfected Judy's contaminated files. If anyone would like a copy of Gardy's diary, transcribed by Judy Jerkins, please email me. Gail New Zealand

Hello, I'm new to the list. In 1915 my great aunt Pamela Padfield was married in St James C of E in North Wonthaggi. She married William Fowler. She had emigrated from Somerset with her family one or two years previously. I was told that William Fowler and George Fowler built the Church. Can anyone tell me: does this Church still exist; is there any record of its history, eg does it mention the founders; is there a photo of the Church that I could have. Any information on the Church, and on any descendants of Pamela and William gratefully received. Regards Joyce Weeks (nee Padfield) Bristol, England.

I've just upgraded the heritage pages on Maffra's web site. All you need do now to get there directly is go to: www.maffra.net.au/heritage You'll note that there is an index of links to other sites in Gippsland (try the Traralgon Society site to see what can be done); I will happily add any relevant site to this list (ie society or organisation). Jan's email about Walhalla sparked off the memory of an amusing headstone I viewed a few months ago while scrambling through the Walhalla Cemetery. It was for someone with the surname MITCHELL and also his wife Lavinia MITCHELL and his daughter NANCE were buried in the same plot. Anyway there was a little verse underneath his name that he had obviously written himself before he died and I thought it left much to the imagination as to the life of this man. OH LET MY SUDDEN DOOM A WARNING BE TO ALL ERE WHILST THOUGH BENDEST O'ER MY TOMB THOU MAY AS QUICKLY FALL It seems that there may have been a few around that he felt would gloat over his death. I noted he died July 24 1880 and he was only 34 years of age at the time. If anyone can claim this man I have a picture of the headstone but his name is chopped off at the top and Nance details chopped off at the bottom (I was trying to capture the verse). Happy to send it to any claimants. I was very impressed with Walhalla - it had a real "feel" about it and I felt like I was stepping back, also a really beautiful spot. Regards, Josie from Tassy
Hi. I'm new to the list and am seeking contact with any descendents of John Fisher REYNOLDS and Margaret Hanoria QUILL, m. 1865 @ Belfast. They had four girls. JFR died at Sale. He came to Aus in about 1854 from USA with brother Edward Tiffin R. I have some photos (mostly unidentified!) that might be of interest - if you can ID them! Dear Jan, I have just returned a book called "Old Walhalla" to my library in the Banyule area of Melbourne. It was a very extensive account of all that occurred in Walhalla from the early days and would be well worth your reading. Sorry I cannot remember the name of the author - it was a small paperback book. If you cannot locate it from your local library (presuming you do not live in the Banyule area), please get back to me. Hello everyone and Happy New Year to you all, While on holidays recently I was advised that in 1900 an ancestor worked for the "Miner" office in Walhalla as foreman. It turns out that his fiancee also lived in Walhalla (although she hailed from Tungamah in Northern Vic.) and they were married at Cowwarr in May of that year at the Catholic Church. I am hoping to find out a little more about their time in Walhalla which, from information I have gathered so far, seems to have been about two years. Does anyone have access to any rates books or photographs for the area or any other information which might help give me a lead. The names are George Francis McGOWAN and Mary McKENZIE. Their first child, George Alexander, was also born in Walhalla. Just out of interest the best man's name was John James JAMIESON and bridesmaid was Maria ROBERTS. Interestingly John married Maria's sister Elizabeth in a double wedding ceremony with George and Mary, with George as John's best man. I have a small newspaper clipping of the wedding ceremoniy. If anyone else has an interest in these families I'd be happy to copy it for you. Cheers, Jan Shaw, Listowner: AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES Email: jbs@nex.net.au Transcriber of FreeBMD at Rootsweb P.S. Hi All, I'm still here lurking. I am wondering if anyone knows if there was a Jeweller/Goldsmith in the Gippsland area by the name of BENNETT. I wear my GGrandmother's wedding ring, which has the maker's mark BENNETT inside. The marriage took place in Longford in 1880. Pam Manning Researching HOPKINS, CANNON, McLAREN, MEDLEY in Gippsland
Hi Matthew and List, Lawrence Bulter was successful in being ballotted a block in the Parish of Licola North in the "Selection to the Limits" selections of 1903. (Valley of Glens p.58) Lawrence Butler was also very active in the flood rescues of August 1891 at Glenmaggie. (Maffra Spectator, 6 August 1891) I suspect Mary Ann Curtain may be the daughter of Michael and Honora Curtain who lost their lives in the bushfires at Glenmaggie in mid January 1900. Honora is said to have gone from safety back into the house for her sewing machine. Her husband was found suffocated between the shafts of a small cart in which he was trying to take his possessions to the creek. (Valley of Glens p.78) Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

I am researching CHARLES GORDON and his wife ANN CROPPER.( my great, great grandparents) Charles and Anne arrived in Sale in 1856 after 5 years in Tasmania. He was originally from Edinburgh and she was from Liverpool. They were living in Reeves St on the corner of McArthur St. in 1866.(the house is still there). Charles and his wife both ran a business in Raymond St, he had a Livery Stable and she had a grocery business. They had a son GEORGE GORDON in 1856 who married ERMINE BARAHAM BROWN in 1878.(both events in Sale) They had eight children of whom I have all the details. CHARLES GORDON died in Sale in 1890 and I have located his headstone in the Sale Cemetery.I can however find no details of his wife ANN GORDON (nee CROPPER). The inscription on Charles' headstone indicates that a niece MARY (wife of JOHN SAWL) joined him in 1920. I am seeking any information about MRS ANN GORDON such as when and where she died. I am seeking any information on the niece MARY who was married to JOHN SAWL ?. I am seeking any information about the lives of the GORDON FAMILY in Sale. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dear List, I wonder if there is anyone on the list with a connection to Emma Hall who came from Essex, (? 1863 aged 28) and married an Edward Jacobs in Sale in 1872. Any information would be most welcome. Regards, Elaine Skehan, Sale,Vic Aust.
Hi Judy Sent this via list for all to see. You are not allowed to publicise names of living people. ( I think it is covered under the privacy act) This was told to someone I know who went to the Electoral Roll Office. The roll is open for all to view and take notes only. You may be able to list an electoral roll over 100 years old, but I don't even know if they had them then. Regards Cheryl
All those people looking for info in the south coast of New South Whales will find this new site of interest http://lightning.prohosting.com/~bvgs/ regards Allison
Hi List, Just a note to let everyone know the Deputy has been very busy again. He has transcribed war memorials at Hill End, Jindivick, Neerim, Neerim Nth, Neerim Sth, Noojee, Stratford and Willow Grove and added them to the resources page on the AVG home page. How nice to be on holidays. Just go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ and from there to Resources, then to War Memorials. Cheers
