    3. Is there any information on JOHN WILLIAMS who, rumour has it, practiced as a 'doctor' in WARRAGUL between 1880 and 1901? Although his occupation on earlier documents had been given as a splitter and a farmer, his death certificate mentioned his occupation as a doctor. A doctor of what? Medicine? Timber? Coming from the goldfields in Bendigo and being illiterate, his abilities as a Medical 'doctor' may have been limited to ripping out a tooth or setting a broken limb. More likely to be in the timber industry. Can anyone help? Really enjoying being on this list so far, Julie from Cairns

    3. Hello list, Just thought I'd like to say "well done!" to the Listowner and Deputy for their transcriptions of the war memorials, and for getting them up on the home page. I went to a presentation of The Broken Years at the Australian War Memorial last Saturday. Very moving. Made me realise how important it is to acknowledge and cherish the stories of the ordinary Australians who endured war. By the way, the War Memorial site at www.awm.gov.au now has a searchable nominal roll for WW1, as well as the Boer War nominal roll, on line. Cheers, Kathy

    3. Hi List, Jeepers, is the Deputy a worry when he gets going! Heaps more war memorials have now been added to the AVG home page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ Just go to Resources, then to War Memorials, and then pick a shire. The War memorials and Honour Rolls have now been split up according to shires, as the site was getting rather large. The new memorials are: Bass Coast: Bass, Cowes, Wonthaggi Baw Baw: Longwarry Cardinia: Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Lang Lang South Gippsland: Kongwak, Koonwarra, Korumburra, Loch, Poowong, Tarwin Lower Sandra McClure has also sent in an honour roll transcription from Madalya, in the hills beyond Yarram, which can be found in the Wellington shire. Thanks Sandra. An absolutely spectacular honour roll from Korumburra, currently on display at Coal Creek Heritage Village has also been added. It is one with photographs of every soldier named. Does anyone from down there know where it was originally on display???? One guess would be the old Korumburra Shire hall. It looks like the Deputy will catch up on most of the war memorials throughout Gippsland (he is on holidays, lucky soul), but if anyone would like to volunteer to transcribe one not already on the site, please let us know. The main challenge now will be to catch up with honour rolls in halls, churches and schools, which are not so easily accessible. 3. Hello, new friends, Just joined and hope someone down there can help me. I am researching the life and genealogy of my father, JOHN McGINNIS WILLIAMS, who was born at Warragul in 1882. His father was JOHN WILLIAMS (born Cape Town, South Africa) who married ELLEN McGINNIS (born at Eaglehawk c. 1859) at Eaglehawk in 1877. They remained in the Bendigo area for a couple of years then later moved to WARRAGUL.. CHILDREN: SARAH (?) born 1876 died 1882 MARY ANN PHENOLIF WILLIAMS born 1878 at Bendigo JOHANNA WILLIAMS born ? dec. prior 1901 JOHN McGINNIS WILLIAMS born 1882 at Warragul JAMES WILLIAMS HENRY WILLIAM WILLIAMS born 1888 at Warragul DANIEL WILLIAMS born ? dec. prior 1901 ROBERT WILLIAMS born 1893 ELLEN WILLIAMS born 1895 CAROLINE WILLIAMS born 1897 JOHN WILLIAMS' (my grandfather) occupation was 'farmer' and 'splitter'. I do not know when arrived in Australia from South Africa, as it does not give this information on his death certificate. He died aged 70 years in 1901 at Warragul. I have details about James Williams but know nothing about my other aunts and uncles. Are there any of my Williams relatives still living in the Warragul/Gippsland area? Could someone please help me? 3. The guest speakers at the Melbourne DPS meeting in February will be Lavender Hill Multimedia http://lavenderhillmm.com.au Their talk will be called " Putting it all together. Your own documentary" Assuming that most of the members might know a little about scanning photos, they will concentrate on adding text, sound, graphics and video to what family historians already do. So if anyone is in Melbourne on Sunday Feb 27 how about coming along to the DPS meeting to hear (and see) Keith and Dianne White from Lavender Hill Multimedia. and if you would like to know more about the Melbourne Dead Person's Society, then check out the web page: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dpsoc/ Lots of interesting things can be found on the above web page. eg: where to find the registry (all states) how to locate convict information how to put together a family reunion. searchable list of Graytown residents. What (computer) database's to use. A list of the most helpful genie books. fantastic links to other genie sites. pages and pages of names we are searching. how to do research in Victoria. where to find shipping records. the guest book alone is well worth reading. a complete (genie) diary of whats on in Melbourne. plus so much more.... you will soon see why it is an "award winning" site! but most importantly - it will help you somewhere - somehow - sometime.
