    2. Helene Hayes
    3. Good Evening All, Sometime ago I purchased 'Shire of Rosedale Centenary 1871-1971' at a second hand book shop. As it does not have an index and as I am temporarily "confined to barracks", with an ill partner, I have indexed it. If any one would like a 'Lookup' please email me privately at helenh@nex.net.au Please put 'Rosedale Lookups' in the Subject Heading. At this stage I have only indexed names, but if there is a particular place, I'll see if I can find that too. Included in the book is a list of those who attended a 'Back To' in 1929, a list of the 1971 residents, street by street, photos and names of the school students in 1971. There are quite a few photos in the book as well. I have found the book interesting, as I travelled through Rosedale many times, to school at Sale in the 60's, and to visit my parents after they retired to Bairnsdale, but had no idea about the early History. By the way I was looking for information re O"MEARA, there is only one mentioned William O'Meara, who was a Councillor for the Toongabbie Riding from 1881-87. Hope this will be helpful to someone out there!! Kind regards Helene Helene J Hayes Pakenham Vic helenh@nex.net.au

    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Dear AVGers, Just a reminder that a Clean Up Australia day for The Springs (north west of Heyfield) has been organised for tomorrow week (Sunday 5th March). The plan is to start the clean up at 10 am, and with the current 6 volunteers, it should take some 3-5 hours. This is an opportunity to tidy up a piece of Gippsland history which is also a very pretty place. If anybody is interested in being involved, please contact me at the address below within the next couple of days. Regards Peter Lakeman surreal@netspace.net.au

    1. [AVG] The last of the war memorials.
    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Hello AVGers, The last (well, nearly) of Gippsland's war memorials have been transcribed and uploaded to the AVG webpage. Most of these were for the Shire of East Gippsland and covers the following areas: Benambra Bindi Brookville Bruthen Cann River Cassilis Doctors Flat Eagle Point Ensay Glen Valley Hinnomungie Lakes Entrance Omeo Orbost Paynesville Reedy Flat Swifts Creek The Brothers Tongio Tongio West Uplands Special thanks to Dianne Carroll, who (at short notice) provided access to the Omeo Shire Hall and Court House which housed some 6 honour rolls. For the Shire of Wellington, the Briagolong and Yarram war memorials have also been upload. A new page has been created for general Gippsland memorials and includes the Boer War Memorial at Bairnsdale which covers a large part of the old South and East Gippsland areas. Unfortunately, two sets of memorial gates were missed, which are those at the secondary college in Orbost, and the Benambra Memorial Recreation Reserve. If any body is able to transcribe these, and save me many hours of travelling, please email me. To my knowledge the above two will complete the transcription of all War Memorials, Memorial Gates and Avenues of Honour in Gippsland. If any body knows of any other memorials of these types which contain names of service personnel, please let me know. After a short break to catch up on other things, I will start on honour rolls/boards (although some have already been transcribed) and will post a query to the list so that a database of rolls/boards can be started. It is expected that this will take a year or more to substantially complete (but never to be finished). I hope the work already done is helpful to researchers, and look forward to hearing from someone who is able to help provide transcriptions for the missing two. Regards Peter Lakeman surreal@netspace.net.au

    1. [AVG] Stapley family
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, We were so successful with Nurse Cocking, that I am venturing to throw another name into the ring. On the Orbost shire WWI Honour Board it lists three Stapley sisters as WWI nurses. In his Gippsland Heritage Journal article on nurses, John Pearson listed only one, Viola Frances Stapley, and only because she gave her next of kin as being at Heyfield. It turns out the three sisters, Viola, Maggie Cressida and Elfrida Mary were all born at Bairnsdale/Lucknow, as were another brother and sister. The family moved to Orbost, where they were amongst the first students at the school, and their father was later a Tambo Shire councillor. By co-incidence, the town of Buch was almost called Stapley, as the father was the one who made the original prospecting discovery. But what happened to the family after Orbost??? Maggie Cressida Stapley, died Lilydale 1949 aged 70, or her sister Frederica Harrie Johnson nee Stapley, died Lilydale 1945 aged 73. Of the other two nursing sisters, Viola Frances Stapley died Heidelberg 1967 aged 93, Elfrida Mary Stapley died Heidelberg 1971 aged 91, possibly at the Repatriation Hospital. Does anyone know anything about them, or who the next of kin may have been at Heyfield??? 3. Re Alice COCKING I did some more looking for Alice Cocking, and got very excited to find some lovely references to her in Rupert Goodmans Our War Nurses. The History of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps 1902-1988. Alice served at 1 AAH Harefield Park in England. This had been an estate house, given over to the military to be converted into a hospital. It became a centre for specialist repair surgery, facial surgery, for blinded casualties and for treatments such as massage. Alice kept a diary, which is lodged in the State Library (Latrobe Library) in Victoria. Goodman quotes bits of this: Many blind boys were in the wards and it was a novel experience for Sister Sheehan and myself to take them to the movies and afterwards to tea at the Mia Mia Caf. We had to describe the pictures to them, they enjoyed the music and the tea, but we had to be back by 6pm. She also served in Egypt, at Abbassia, and wrote: I pitied the camel corps out here in the desert, for with those camels, the soldiers got very sore hands and gastric trouble, good food was hard to get. The wounded came in by train, covered in dust, bearded and lousy. We had to cut off their clothes, give them a clean wash, dressings and pyjamas. Many died before we could tend them. Other Gippsland nurses served in both these places. This book has a wonderful photograph of Sister Alice Cocking, AANS, RRC and Bar. (Although the woman in this photograph does not look the same person as the one identified as Sister Cocking (later Williams) at Mandalya - however the Alice Cocking of the diary later became Alice Williams!) Alice Elizabeth Cocking is listed as retired from the 3rd Military District (Victoria) Staff Nurse Reserve List in 1925. Was so excited to find all this information I had to write it now (1.50am) - I had not connected this lady as one of the Gippsland WW1 nurses. 3. Hello List and Linda There is a lovely photograph of Nurse Cocking on P 26 of the Yarram Hospital History 'Splendid Isolation a history of the Yarram and District Health Service' by Peter Stone, published a year or so back by the hospital. Nurse Cocking, it says, came to the area as the second Madalya bush nurse, and was there in 1915, though officially appointed on April 15 1915. She later became Mrs Williams, and she only died in 1972. She must have done her war service after 1915. Anyone with access to the Yarram papers might find a record of her embarkation or return. They were often written up, or letters from them published in the papers by friends or family. The Bush Nursing movement was established in the early years of the 20th century, to meet the needs of people living in very isolated circumstances, not able to easily access doctors care, as doctors tended to be based in towns and settlements. The Bush Nurse worked in isolation, under very difficult and primitive conditions often. She would be provided with accomodation by the community who employed her, and with transport, often a horse, later sometimes, if the terrain permitted, a bicycle. She would deal with births, sickness and accidents, and often became part of the community she served, playing the piano at social functions and so on. South Gippsland was so remote and difficult that by 1913, it had 5 of the 12 bush nursing centres located there. Others were at Dargo, some settlements in East Gippsland, later at Heyfield, and at places in the Ottways such as Beech Forrest. They were very resourceful women!! I would be interested, too, on any more information about Nurse Cocking, as I gather up what I can on local war nurses (WW1) Ann Synan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am trying to shed some light on a "nurse Cocking" who appears on the "teachers" side of the Madalya WWI Honour Roll, currently held at Port Albert Maritime Museum. Madalya is in the Strzeleckis near Yarram, sort of around the Tarra Bulga area. I am chasing her up a little as John Pearson, who has researched Gippsland WWI nurses, cannot find a Gippsland connection for her. He knows her as having next of kin at Castlemaine. She appears to be Alice Elizabeth Cocking, born 1879 at Clunes, the daughter of William Tustin Cocking and Elizabeth Newell. Does anyone know anything about her????? The note reads: "uncle Jim (ANDERSON) had a daughter, Dot, and two others who all married JEFFREYs and lived at Rosedale" I can find no trace of any such marriage/s in the Victorian BDM indexes nor, indeed, the marriage of James ANDERSON - he the son of James ANDERSON and Jane MOORE and born 1859 at Bulla. Nor is there any record of the birth of a Dorothy/ Doris/Dorothea ANDERSON with a father's name of James. Is there anyone out there who may have any local or family knowledge of the foregoing? The information on the note was supplied about ten years ago by my wife's mother, Myrtle Mc PHERSON (nee SMITH), granddaughter of James and Jane. Peter, (the older of the tworobbos) at Bairnsdale, capital of the Victorian Riviera.

    3. I would like to publicly thank two members of the list, Chris, for sending me photocopied info and picture of St Pauls in Sale and Elaine for sending me a wonderful booklet and post card of St Pauls. I intend scanning the pictures of the church and stained glass windows, and adding them as well as info about the church and a time line for St Pauls to my web page for everyone else to share, hopefully it will help others as well, Once again thankyou to these 2 wonderful people regards Joanne
