Lesley, The State Library (Victoria) have an excellent photo collection of Walhalla on their multimedia web page. Just do a search for Walhalla and you will get approx. 120 photos. Go to http://www.slv.vic.gov.au Also try giving Greg and Tracey Hansford a call at the Walhalla Museum on 03 51656250. Mathew Merington
Hi List, I am about to start work in the near future on a history of Lindenow and surrounding districts (eg Walpa, Wuk Wuk, Coongulmerang). This is going to be a very long term project. At this stage I am just putting the word out, so that people can register with me if they have an interest in any families in the area, and would be interested in contributing details of their families or hearing from me if I come across them in my research. First outing will be to the Field Days up there on 28th and 29th April, where I will be set up for people to give me details as well. So if you are there, call by. Hi Lesley >The questions I want to ask are: > >1. How would I find out if these graves still exist - short of taking a >pilgrimage to see.(Not possible at the moment) I believe there are semi-published (if there is such a thing) lists of headstones at Walhalla, and possibly burials. Can anyone help?? If there is a known headstone, could someone repy to the list, as someone else going there in the near future may volunteer to check it. >3. There was an enquiry in to Charles MARSH's death on the following day. >Would these records still exist, and if so - where? Inquest records are available through the Public Record Office of Victoria, but I THINK they are in the throes of moving them. Does anyone know??? If, lesley, you could let us know where you are (eg QLD) we would know you cannot easily access them, and SKS (some knind soul) may be in a better position to help. Your other evenue is to access the local paper - if you were in Victoria we could possibly suggest the closest. >4. There may be two children buried with the ROGERS, as I have no way of >knowing if these two were born in Walhalla, or were born in California where >William and Elizabeth were married, and my gt. grandmother was born. If you cannot find them on the Victorian indexes, I think your only way is to get the death certificates of the children. Anyone else any other suggestions??? > Notice I avoided no.2 about the band photo. -----Original Message----- From: Lesley Sinclair [mailto:les_sin@globalfreeway.com.au] Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2000 8:35 AM To: VIC-AUS-GIPPSLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Walhalla Hi Everyone, Have just joined the list, and have several questions which some knowledgeable person may be able to help me with. I have three gt.gt. grandparents buried in Walhalla, namely: Charles MARSH d 5th Jan. 1877 aged 40. He fell down a Mine shaft and was killed. William ROGERS d 17 Apr 1899 aged 45. Elizabeth Anne ROGERS d 1 Sep 1898 aged 43. The latter two were husband and wife (Cornish ) The questions I want to ask are: 1. How would I find out if these graves still exist - short of taking a pilgrimage to see.(Not possible at the moment) 2. Many years ago my grandmother went to Walhalla and found that Charles MARSH had been the Bandmaster before his death, and that there was a photo of him in the Rotunda. If someone still lives in the area, is there a chance of finding out if a photo might still exist in some local archives? 3. There was an enquiry in to Charles MARSH's death on the following day. Would these records still exist, and if so - where? 4. There may be two children buried with the ROGERS, as I have no way of knowing if these two were born in Walhalla, or were born in California where William and Elizabeth were married, and my gt. grandmother was born. Thanks for bearing with me. All suggestions gratefully received. Lesley
Hi List, Those dynamic people down at the Foster Museum have just passed on to me news about their forthcoming exhibition: "Of Mines, Men and Secret Women's Work: South Gippsland Perspectives on the experience of war". Discover another perspective on Australians at War. South Gippsland Shire Historical Society Museum, Main Street, Foster When? Sunday 9 April to Wednesday 26 April. Sounds good! Hello there, Whilst trekking in the Walhalla area recently, I came across the grave of Kitty Cain alongside the road to Matlock. There is nothing marked only a cross on the grave so does anyone know who she was and the story behind her? Would be interested to know. TIA Regards Lee
My name is Norm Johnston and I am searching for descendents of the following people; JOHNSTON descendents of John JOHNSTON and Mary MCCLURE who immigrated from Isle of Skye in 1854 and settled in the Sale area. ROSS descendents of William ROSS and Euphemia JOHNSTON who worked in the Winnindoo area near Heyfield. Some of the children were: William, John, Ann Jane, Mary Anne, Robert. PARKER descendents of Richard PARKER and Margaret JOHNSTON who had at least two daughters; MArion Maude and Annie. I am not sure where they lived after marriage but Richard and Margaret were born at Bairnsdale and Sale respectively.
Linda, Look no further. The good doctor is facing page 77. I will scan him ( if I can fit his head under the scanner} and email him to your pronto if you promise to come and help me weed my garden :-) Walter Savige

Hello: Yes, the pictures have arrived safely and I do want to 'Thank" everyone on this list for all their assistance. Linda, Sandra Beckett & Peter along with everyone else have been extremely helpful in helping me sort out my lost history and family. I think you all might get a chuckle out of this as a printed picture is on the way back (by post) to Australia to a person near Brisbane. He is a descendant of Dr Arbuckle's sister Marion and just happened to post a message to the Inverness List looking for the Greig family. There is more research to be done but we are now on the right track. I could never have done this without all your help. This list is great. It looks now like Marion died in Scotland but 2 of her sons (William Murdoch Greig & Andrew Arbuckle Greig) went to Australia. Take Care & Happy Hunting Lorraine Ottawa, Canada
Hi List, Thanks to all the offers and attachments - Dr Arbuckle, in his second version wearing a scottish bonnet, has now been scanned and gone to Canada. Thanks Walter, Jeremy and Sandra Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/
Hello, Linda Yes, I have a copy of that book. Do you want me to scan the photo of Dr Arbuckle and send to you or to Lorraine? Noticed also various brief references to Dr Arbuckle in 'Caledonia Australis' [in 1841] including: "Arbuckle had his two-year-old daughter, Flora, with him. He was a widower and a very resourceful will o' the wisp." In actual fact Flora Arbuckle didn't arrive in Australia until 1856 when she was 18 years old! Wonder where Don Watson got his version from. This is not the only error I've picked up in Watson's book - he has my McDonalds coming from Skye when they were from Ulva & Gometra just off the coast of the Isle of Mull. Hi List, Is there anyone out there who has both a copy of Richard Mackay's "Recollections of Early Gippsland Goldfields" AND a scanner. I cannot find my copy at the moment (you should see my study!!!) and Lorraine from Canada would dearly love to get her hands on the copy of the photo of Dr Arbuckle that I know is in that book. She now has the one in Gippsland Heritage Journal Vol.2 no.2, but I think that one might be different Could you please let me know if you can help, so I know I can stop searching and weed the garden, and so Lorraine doesn't have ten large attachments of the same thing arrive in her in-tray. Angela Ashton, The index of "The Unfolding Hills" shows neither of the names ASHTON or HARRIS. Furthermore, neither name is shown among the holders of land allotments in the Mirboo Parish maps which accompany the book. Walter Savige
Angela I will be happy to do a lookup for you in due course, once I obtain a copy of the book. I think (almost sure) that the Moe Family History Society has a copy of the Victorian Electoral Roll from the 1990's. Their Library, based in the meeting room at the rear of Moe Library, is open every Wednesday between 1pm and 4pm, or on meeting nights the fourth Thursday of each month from 7pm. cheers Claire ===== Claire Wood Traralgon, Vic. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear Listers, Can anyone please tell me where I may access an old electoral roll. (Not that old actually, only around 1994) I know they are on microfiche at the State Library, but have tried to see if copies kept locally (Gippsland) The Traralgon library didn't know, but later confirmed it didn't have them. Monash uni doesn't, and of course the electoral office doesn't. Are they on the Web? Gary Matthews (gmatthews@hazpower.com)
Thanks Linda, yes I have tried Ngarak. Used them before, too. A great place for all kinds of books. Thanks also to Mathew Merington for his help.
