A reminder to those of you who live in Gippsland: the annual regional conference of Gippsland historical societies will be held at Mirboo North on Saturday, May 6th. The morning will be devoted to the meeting; the afternoon to lunch and a town walk. Friends, rellies and hangers-on are all welcome to join in the latter. For those of you who don't know the town, you'll find it a delightful surprise. If you require further details, just e-mail me back. Yours, Jeremy Look me up at www.maffra.net.au/jjbpage.htm
Dear List Folk This family lived in the Korumburra area from about 1880 to at least 1962. We have a photo of a memorial stone with "Sanders Pionees" on the upright section but can not read more. Please, how can I find out more about this and others in K. cemetery? Would love to hear from anyone one else interested in this family. Jean in New Zealand
I believe it is a State Library travelling exhibition of photographs from the 1956 Olympics, now open at Omeo and later will go to Leongatha? The curator was interviewed on Gippsland ABC on Monday afternoon. -----Original Message----- From: Linda Barraclough [mailto:kapana@netspace.net.au] Sent: Tuesday, 11 April 2000 6:55 PM To: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AVG] Chairs exhibition - preliminary notice Hi List, Preliminary notice that an exhibition of historic chairs, based on one two years ago by Stratford Historical Society, will open at the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale, Tuesday 9th May and run until Thursday 8th June. Hi Linda I have a Patrick Donoghue in my brother-in-laws family who was living and farming at Lindenow prior to his marriage in 1898. He arrived in Australia around 1888 and I believe went straight to Gippsland. He married Mary Elizabeth Deery (b. Bairnsdale but living in Bengworden) and together they had five children in the district at Coongulmerang until 1906 and they moved to Nambrok and had another five children. I would welcome any reference to this family if you come across them. As I continue my research into the family I will also keep in mind anything I find for the area and forward it onto you. The cemetery is on the side of a very steep hill, and is terraced. Some of the headsones have little platforms built out so they can be flat. And, from memory, some may run along the contour of the hill - which is an easier way to bury people than digging an extra deep hole to stand them up. I have heard this story often, but on a number of visits to the cemetery I have found the layout does not support the suggestion. Sorry. :( Linda

Hi List Today I went to the opening exhibition at the Foster Museum and I must congratulate the organizers on a great job WELL DONE on the presentation of the exhibition The Guest speaker was very interesting to listen to and the whole afternoon was excellent with approx 48 people in attendance. The exhibition was focused on " Mines, Men & Secret Women's Work in Sth.Gippsland and the experience of war " The exhibition is OPEN till Wed 26th April and is well worth a visit. Hi Kim, Thank you very much for the Rogers' information, which is just what I needed re: Matthew and Catherine Eliza. They were listed as just 'dead' on their parents death certs. On William's death cert., the little girl was Catherine, and on Elizabeth's, the little girl was called Eliza. It is also anecdotal in our family that people were buried standing up because of the steepness of the cemetry, so there must be something in it. I am posting this to the list as well, because of this unique burial custom! Thanks again for the info. Lesley
Lee wrote: Whilst trekking in the Walhalla area recently, I came across the grave of Kitty Cain alongside the road to Matlock. There is nothing marked only a cross on the grave so does anyone know who she was and the story behind her? ======================= oooh, thought everyone would be having a go at this one. Kitty Kane was said to be a lady of large proportions who kept a shanty. She was being carried to the cemtery when the miners apparently gave up and buried her by the roadside. Maybe someone out there who can find their copy of Rogers and Hellyar on Gippsland Graves can give some more details, like a date??? Lee, to quote from "Lonely graves of the Gippsland Goldfields and Greater Gippsland" by J.G.Rogers & Nelly Helyar: "Kitty Cane was a supposed dance hall girl, having arrived in the district during the heyday of Wood's Point and surrounding goldfields. She was carted by packhorse to the district by Louie the Frenchman, for nine pence per pound...she weighed in at 22 stone. Kitty soon set up a wayside tavern along the side of the road near Aberfeldy...Her business venture survived for only a short time as Kitty died at her tavern of an unknown ailment. Local miners hearing of the stressful situation, arrived to give Kitty the great sendoff they thought she truely deserved. Several men intended to carry her to the Aberfeldy Cemetery, but most had imbibed too freely of her wines and they gave up the attempt. Kitty's great weight and their state of inebriation defeated them and they laid her body to rest a short distance from her shanty... her grave, clearly seen and signposted ...on the Walhalla side of Aberfeldy Later, the book explores the mystery behind Kitty Cain, asking the question whether Kitty Cain was actually Catherine Lowe who died at Aberfeldy in 1863 - Claire ===== Claire Wood Traralgon, Vic. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Lesley, as you see I didn't find all the children's births - will have another look - perhaps I didn't look hard enough. HOWEVER my father told me many years ago that everyone was buried on their feet in WALHALLA - someone correct me if this is not correct....... There are certainly a lot of graves in Walhalla - or were 20 odd years ago (keep forgetting I don't live in AUS anymore!) And I certainly believed him because they were on the side of a very steep hill..... So perhaps they are not all in the one grave - or did they bury them side by side ...... Hope this helps Kim Harbeck Steiger Switzerland
Yes, Linda, The PRO is moving records to the new "home" in North Melbourne, from Laverton. Sadly for me and those of us on this side of the city, the Laverton research rooms have now closed and only the Melbourne room is open for research till about 2002, I think. Some records are still available for access through Melbourne room, using a somewhat difficult (for us, anyway) system of ordering. The PRO website probably gives more details of this now. I am not sure, but I think that they do still answer phone or mail enquiries so perhaps Lesley may be able to use this avenue. A CD ROM index of inquests in Vict. is about to be released in coming months. Available through Macbeth, I think or Gould Books, for anyone interested. Thank-you Graeme, Matthew and Linda for your very useful advice. I have somewhere to enquire, now. I meant to tell you that I live in Bassendean, Western Australia, and have the care of my two very dear, frail-aged parents. Our city library and genealogy society carry only limited information on Victoria, although I believe there is a Study Group for Victoria at WAGS. All help is greatly appreciated.I will let you know of any progress. Lesley
