I apologiset o those people that are on the same lists as me - as you will receive this message several times --- sorry. I will miss reading all the emails BUT I really do need to gather all my information and write to all the people that I owe letters. So, until I rejoin these lists - enjoy your research and I hope you all have success. Does anyone have a death date for Uriah Hoddinott? He was buried at Bairnsdale in 1885. I would like to check his obituary in the Bairnsdale Advertiser. I am trying to ascertain if he worked as a protector of Aborigines before coming to Gippsland in 1845. Peck (memoirs of a stockman) said he came from Goulburn NSW (where he had been protector of Aborigines) accompanied by two Aborigines. I suspect it is more likely the Victorian Goulburn River protectorate, there was a rations depot at Murchison on the Goulburn, but the protectors there were Dredge and then LeSoeuf. Any assistance much appreciated.
Heavens, I didn't realise there were six impressions of "The Hills of Home"! Eileen Finlay was born in Maffra, the daughter of P.C. Moroney, the Shire Secretary. Before Maffra, he was Shire Secretary in Bairnsdale. Her most famous series is "The Caravan Passes" and "The Caravan Returns", set in the hills outside Moe. She mainly wrote int he 1940s, and was much before her time - her heroine was an unmarried mother, and she tackled many social issues. Her father died when the family was living in the western district, and the Maffra Shire sent money to help support her mother. Her mother had a private hospital in Lilydale called Maffra, and I know Eileen Finlay lived in South Gippsland at some time, but I cannot work out where. Her husband was a well-known architect who was killed in a boating accident in Lakes Entrance, so it was probably after that time. Margie refers at the bottom to "The Specialist" - a pamphlet written under the pen-name of Mrs Boswarick, in answer to American Chick Sale's work on outdoor dunnies called "The Amateur". And if anyone can ever turn up a photograph of her...... She is one of Gippsland's authors who is interesting, but little studied. Catherine, wife of John, (formerly Smith and Murphy) nee Callaghan (also known as Higgins and Sheehan/Shean etc.) The death of Catherine Walters isn't recorded in the Victoria BDM. Is there any way of finding out who were witnesses at the burial? Is anyone researching this family? Their daughter Elizabeth b. 1855 m. William Davis in 1887. Children: Catherine Elizabeth, John William, William Henry, Thomas Henry, John, James Davis, Phoebe Ann, Albert Edward, David. Several of Catherine's Murphy children born in NSW moved to the Omeo area in the early 1860s. Lyn Wardle

Recently I received a clipping of the death of JOHN HOPKIN of Neerim Junction taken from the Irvine Valley News, Scotland - July 1914. See quote below: John Hopkin was born in Ayr, Scotland in 1830, father Robert mother Elizabeth (?) The brothers also emigrated were likely William and Robert HOPKIN. Perhaps all three brothers married in Australia? Can anyone shed some light on these three brothers AND/OR provide some direction for my continued research? DEATH OF AN AUSTRALIAN PIONEER >From a copy of the "Warrague Guardian" just received, we learn that Mr. John Hopkins, a native of Crossroads, died at Neerim Junction on April 17th at the ripe age of 86....for twenty years he followed elusive fortune on most of the gold rushes in Victoria... in company with two of his brothers and some other gentlemen he selected land in the Neerim district.. forty years of residence at Neerim....leaves a widow.
