    3. I have just noticed, driving past, that Bushy Park, the original homestead site of Angus McMillan, near Boisdale, is up for auction on 2nd June. It incorporates the original site and ten hectares. The old wooden house remains are from a time that I suspect is considerably after McMillan, but are still quite interesting. Have had a quick look for the time of the auction, but cannot see it. Will post more details when to hand. 3. Does anyone know anything about this Society? I note that in November, 1870, Dr Arbuckle (yes, that man again!!) chaired a meeting to form a Caledonian Society in Sale. I'd be interested to know if any records/minutes still exist and if so, where they are. What did the society actually do, apart from (presumably) celebrating Hogmanay???? -- Regards, Sandra Beckett PO Box 381 Hastings 3915 Victoria, Australia Home : 03 59791237 Mob : 0419 508585 Email: pbeckett@peninsula.starway.net.au

Therein are listed details of 23 societies in the region including postal and electronic contacts. There are quite a number of changes from the previous directory. A copy is provided to each of the listed societies, but it is also available to interested individuals at $5.75 including p&p within Australia. Email me direct if interested. 3. Hi Lucy I know of The Walhalla Chronicle which was published in January 1870. It was still going in 1890. There is a single copy availale in Mitchell Library Sydney but almost all others seems to have been destroyed by fire etc. Possibly some privately owned. There are also some at La Trobe Library Melbourne dated 1882. Perhaps some other readers know of any other Newspapers for thea area . A James Rogers was a coach driver in Walhalla area. Regards Lori

The most recent result was a fabulous 22 page Inquest of Charles MARSH's death, kindly sought and sent by Victoria (one of your subscribers). It was an amazing document, and almost brought my ancestor into my own living room. Thanks heaps for the help. The information I received continues to bear fruit. I was wondering if anyone out there would know what was the name of the 'local rag' (ie: newspaper) for the Walhalla area in the 1870-90 period. Best wishes from Lesley

    3. Hi List This news was in my Southern Cross Genealogy newsletter. Should be of interest to all. Regards Cheryl 3. Victorian BDM Charges Family historians might be interested in a reply received by a subscriber here, to a query on the cost of using the Victorian Historical Index on line, considering that it was put together by volunteers). Here's an extract . make of it what you will . QUOTE Access to birth, death and marriage records in Australia has never been free of charge in 150 years. The historical index search service on maxi is now giving access to these indexes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, extending their availability to a much wider clientele than previously and it is cheaper than any other method of access. A major effort has been put in to quality assurance of these indexes with the result that they are recognised by genealogical experts as the most reliable and comprehensive family history indexes in Australasia. As an example of the difference, New South Wales indexes lack the mother's maiden name, a vital search field for tracing births. The cost of producing these indexes includes the development and maintenance of software, the cost of commercial data entry to supplement volunteer effort, and the ongoing cost of using the maxi site. The revenue earned is used, inter alia, for both core business improvements and the imaging of historic records. As a result of using this income to improve services, it has been possible to abolish priority fees for certificates and reduce certificate fees across the board to a flat $17.00, the cheapest in Australia by a substantial margin. Providing such services free of charge would simply mean that they could not have been developed in the first place, and new services could not be provided in the future. As far as we can ascertain, the New South Wales Registry is the only one that is currently providing a free family history service on the Internet. The search facility is free for a trial period only, as advised on the site, to gauge public opinion on its value and I understand a fee based system is proposed in the future. I hope this goes some way towards helping you understand the need to charge for this service. UNQUOTE Mmmmmmmmmm . ? What do you think ?
