Dear Ann There is an article in the December 1999 issue of "The Ancestral Searcher", the journal of the Heraldry & Genealogy Society of Canberra that you should read. If you belong to a Genealogy Society ( and I hope that you do) then there will more than likely be a copy there; failing that, a copy can be purchased from HAGSOC at GPO Box 585, Canberra ACT 2601 for just $4 plus postage. You can e-mail the Society on <hagsoc@hagsoc.com.au>. The article is entitled "A Swing Rioter in the Family" and provides quite a bit of background material. Dear Listers, Isaac Iles ancestor of the Howlett/Iles family was a swing rioter. I wonder if that was why he was convicted and sent to Tasmania? I will try the Tasmanian List. Thanks Lynda for your reply. Regards, Ann Burnell
Thanks for the answer Majella , and sorry I've not been organised enough to reply sooner . I think Harold TREW may be Harry's nephew as Harry was 70 something in 1954 . The BDM's have a Harold born 1905 or so . And Harry was born 1879 . I think this may just be one of those things I will never know , but there has to be a reason for a person to move from one side of the state to the other . Regards Aileen Travis
Hello Peter (Robinson) Vaccination was against Smallpox. It was a mandatory public health measure for many years that all children were vaccinated against that disease. Hi Ann, >Can anyone tell me what a "Swing Rioter" is? A 'Swing rioter'' was one of those agricultural workers in the UK, in the period 1830-32, who protested by smashing farming machinery like threshing machines. The took their name from a mythical 'Captain Swing' who 'signed' warning letters that were sent to farm-owners. The movement was quite widespread, and corresponded to the 'Luddites' amongst the industrial workers. Best! Lloyd MITCHELL & WALKER in Korumburra and Kardella, 1890 onwards
Hi Listers, Can anyone tell me what a "Swing Rioter" is? Regards, Ann Burnell
I am searching for descendants of John Ross, a chemist in Sale in the late 1800's. I would like some information about this man as he was a friend of my husband's grandfather,Joseph Hyde who had a property at Stradbroke, south of Sale. Di Christensen

Hi Linda I have a little book which gives the origin of place names along the Omeo Hwy. It mentions a STUARTS Creek - north of Bruthen past Monkey Ck but before Double Bridges. Apart from that I can't find anything similar. Regards Lori
Thanks John for the additional 'enrichment' - makes for interesting comparison with today's times and the recent federal government drive re vaccination and the resistance to it on the part of some people! Regards Peter, the older of the two Robbos, at Bairnsdale, capital of the Victorian Riviera
Thanks Carl Peter, the older of the two Robbos, at Bairnsdale, capital of the Victorian Riviera
Thanks Margerie - I suspected that but as it's not spelt out on the certificate I was unsure. Regards Peter, the older of the two Robbos, at Bairnsdale, capital of the Victorian Riviera
One branch of my family (Christensens) all lived in the Glengarry area, and to a man/woman were buried in Toongabbie Cemetery. As Glengarry is only a couple of miles north of Traralgon, another possibility would be Traralgon Cemetery - a very scenic cemetery built on a bluff overlooking the Latrobe River near Tyers. -- Regards, Sandra Beckett PO Box 381 Hastings 3915 Victoria, Australia Home : 03 59791237 Mob : 0419 508585 Email: pbeckett@peninsula.starway.net.au
Having read many volumes of court records, these notices for small pox vaccinations were common and show up on a weekly basisin the petty sessions, with many of the parents being taken to court and charged with the offence! -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- Dianne Carroll Author * Historian * Genealogist Yarragon 3823
Possible!! In the township of Stirling, Mr Stewart was a publican in the early 1880s and by 1895 Margaret Stewart was the licencee of the Retreat Hotel. Looking at references that I have, there is no reference to Stewart Creek, but there is an un-named contributry to the Haunted Stream. NRE or Parks map will show this and confirm its name. ( I have lent my Parks map, so can't look it up for you at this stage) -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- -^-*-^- Dianne Carroll Author * Historian * Genealogist Yarragon 3823
Hi List, We are getting closer to Stewart's Creek - it is said to be a mining area near Bruthen. Can anyone help??? Is the Haunted Stream / Stirling a possibility???? Linda
Greeting s Folks.. It was my understanding that it was for small pox.. I had a great uncle born early 1890's who in 1910 required a birth certificate( insurance purposes )and discovered that his birth was not registered.. Following a supreme court appearance by his father and Affidavitts ++ . it was discovered that because Mother "did not trust Vaccinations" and the mandatory connection between Birth registration and Vacination it had been decided Not to register the birth. I also understand that the Vaccination laws changed in detail several times in the early 1890's. BFN John "Dr. Margerie Linton (by way of Linda Barraclough )" wrote: > Hi Peter > > Probably smallpox. Hi List Could anyone tell me where to find lists for Sale and Glengarry cemetry's. I have a woman who died in 1946 in Sale but I think she lived in Glengarry at the time so I'm not sure where she will have been buried.
