I am researching some early fishing/fishermen on the gippsland lakes. I am interested in finding out more on William Bott who in 1892 described himself as a fishermen from Dutson. He had fished Lake Wellington since 1886, but had fished (elsewhere) since 1880. I would like to know where he came from before arriving in Gippsland. He was still fishing in 1908, but after that I think he may have become a boatbuilder in Sale. I know he has descendants in Gippsland and am hoping someone may be able to give me more biographical info. Thanks Coral Dow
I am researching my mothers family and would be interested in any information on the above families.the limited details I have are as follows Midge HOPE born 1895 in Bairnsdale to parents John Denbigh HOPE and Theresa Joanna MACLEOD. Midge was married to Donald Allan DAVIS. I would appreciate any information on the HOPE or MACLEOD families as I know nothing. I am also interested in following up my great grandmothers family. Her name was Janie Elizabeth MANSON. She was married to George Martley DAVIS. Thankyou to the people that helped me re. the Davis family I now have quite a lot of information back to about 1807. Regards Sally Lee
Hello Trudy, I don't know whether I can help you, but here goes. I have a friend whose stepmother was Alice ARMSTRONG [m.Cliff DIXON], they lived at Longwarry. Alice had sisters Margaret [Maggie], Isobell [Bell],and Dolly, and brothers Richard and Jack. Dates of birth would probably be around late 1800s or early 1900s. If you can give me some details of your Armstrong family, I will see if there is a connection. Regards, Margaret Rowe. Dear Listers, I found an article in the May 50 plus news today. Lauris Stanger 11 Morford Court, Shadow Park SA 5158 Telephone (08) 8381 3318 "Lauris Stanger, who now lives in South Australia, has a long association with the Victorian town of Yallourn. Her father, Tom, arrived there late in 1920 even before the town was named, married Irene Mitchell of Trafalgar, daughter of a Gippsland pioneer family. The Stangers began their family life in one of the first houses in the town and enjoyed the great community feeling engendered in a new town where "eveyone banded together". Lauris writes that "Yallourn became one of the prettiest towns in Victoria, even though totally owned by the State Electricity Commission, a great place for a family. "I represented Yallourn twice raising money for the hospital and was made a life governor for my efforts." She became the local chiropodist and her four children were born in the town. Now Lauris Stanger is engaged in a project to produce a book recording Yallourn's history from 1920, until 1981. She appeals to anyone who can submit stories om how and why Yallourn can be seen as a "nice place to live in and not just a hole in the ground". It is hoped that the book "Our Yallourn" will be a permanent record for the grandchildren of former residents and their children. There is still time to submit your story and the memories you may have of Yallourn. Send any information you would like to contribute to etc." Hope someone may be able to assist this person. Kind regards, Ann Burnell Ann Burnell 121 Wimbledon Avenue MOUNT ELIZA 3930 VIC. AUSTRALIA E-mail burnell@peninsula.starway.net.au

Dear Sue, Glengarry doesn't have a cem. The nearest would be Toongabbie (rural) or Traralgon (urban). As a member of the Mid-Gippsland FHS, I assisted in transcribing both of these and have fiche copies here at home for headtones and registers. Send details and I'll do what I can. Annie , Traralgon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "SUE MCFARLANE" <mcfarlane_sue@hotmail.com> To: <AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, 10 June 2000 9:31 AM Subject: [AVG] SALE/GLENGARRY CEMETRY > Hi List > Could anyone tell me where to find lists for Sale and Glengarry cemetry's. > I have a woman who died in 1946 in Sale but I think she lived in Glengarry > at the time so I'm not sure where she will have been buried. DAVIS and HOPE families. I am new to this so apologies for any mistakes! Iam attempting to research my mothers family who to my knowledge came from various parts of East Gippsland. My mother was PATRICIA HOPE DAVIS, her father was DONALD ALLAN DAVIS and mother MINNIE DAVIS (nee HOPE), father JOHN HOPE, mother THERESA JOANNA HOPE (nee MC LEOD). DONALD ALLAN DAVIS lived on a property called "Martley" as a child. Thanks if you can help, Sally Lee
Hello All, This is my first time on this list. I am searching for any information on the family of Lewis Perrine Green and his wife, Sarah Jane (Morrison) Green. They were living in Woods Point in May 1868, when their second daughter, Florence was born and still in Miller Street, Woods Point in 1869. Their children were: Henry, David, Frank, Emily and Florence. Lewis Green was classified as a miner on Florence's birth certificate. However other certificates have him as a sawyer, mine manager, storekeeper, miner and speculator. He spent his working life in the goldfields, having sailed to Australia from New Jersey U.S. in abt. 1850. Any information at all that may help me find Lewis Perrine Green and/or any record of his life in Woods Point would be very much appreciated. All the family moved to Melbourne at some later time after Henry and Frank joined the PMG, except Lewis. No record anywhere in Victoria of his death. Help please!! Robyn Clarke N.S.W.
Hello Everyone: Many people on this list have been very good to me and I can never seem to reciprocate but wanted to share this poem with you. It was on another list and marked Author Unknown there so I feel I am safe in sending it. Many Thanks Lorraine Ottawa, Canada CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would affect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown
