    3. Thank you Michele, I will look for those titles in my local library. I realize there were thousands of men working in the bush mills in Victoria and the chances of finding any references to my grandfather are pretty thin, but I suppose you have to try somewhere and the gippsland list seems to be the obvious one to try for leads. Thanks again for your prompt response. 3. Hi Listers, My grandfather "Harry" ARCHIBALD worked in various saw mills in the Gippsland area in the late 1800`s and early 1900`s. His expertise was the installation and alignment of the saw benches that they used in the mills in that period. Are there any records of people that were employed in the mills of the period and if so where would i look for same. I don`t have the names of any of the mills and i understand that there were large numbers of them operating, but as i have discovered from family history research in the past, if you don`t try you don`t win. Regards from Norman ARCHIBALD.

As part of my research into my wife's family tree I am seeking information about, and/or descendants of, Elizabeth Ethel (sometimes Ethel Elizabeth) ANDERSON, born 1887 at Sale, who married Samuel Henry HAMMILL in 1913 (probably at Sale). Samuel died in 1919 and Elizabeth subsequently remarried to an unknown GIBBS, date and location unknown, and later died in Sale at age 60 in 1948. Elizabeth's parents were James ANDERSON and Ann Mary Clements RECORD. Any information would be most welcome and gratefully acknowledged. He came to Australia with his brother in law Dr. Hedley, Dr. Reeve of Snakes Ridge and his brother James Peck. Dr. Peck married Anna Maria Robertson (1823-1859) who died in Sale soon after her arrival there, following the birth of her sixth child. Dr. Peck then married Menie Campbell (1820-1884), a sister in law of Robert Thomson. However shortly after their wedding Dr. Peck contacted an infection while performing an autopsy, and died five days later. Dr. Hedley took over his practice after his sudden death. James Peck (c. 1833-1884) was the younger brother of Dr. Floyd Minter Peck, and lived at "Bowerette" near "Grasdale". He married Ada Minter (C.1846-1918), the daughter of a doctor from Mount Moriac, and became a successful stock agent. 1. [AVG] Dr. George Dixon Hedley, Gippsland
    2. Dear Listers, I write from 'the old country' regarding the above and would like to discover what happened to him and/or his descendants. What little I know at present is as follows: George Dixon HEDLEY, born about 1817 at Camberwell, Surrey, England, baptised 9 July 1817 at St. Giles's Church, Camberwell, Surrey, England. Occupation, surgeon. Father: George HEDLEY, mother: Isabella ? Marriage: 22 September 1842 at St. Mary's Church, Newmarket, Suffolk, England. Wife: Anna Elizabeth Hawes PECK, born about 1823 at Newmarket, Suffolk, baptised 15 January 1823 at St. Mary's Church, Newmarket, Suffolk, the daughter of Dr. Robert James PECK and his wife, the former Sarah MINTER. The HEDLEYs had four children in England: Agatha Mary HEDLEY, baptised 25 January 1844 at St. Peter's Church, Bedford; George Robert HEDLEY baptised 29 May 1847 at St. Peter's Church, Bedford; Edward HEDLEY, baptised 12 May 1848 at St. Peter's Church, Bedford; and Emily Ann HEDLEY, baptised 8 October 1849 at St. Peter's Church, Bedford. The marriage of George Dixon HEDLEY, aged 25, bachelor, surgeon, of Bedford, son of George HEDLEY, stationer, and Anna Elizabeth Hawes PECK, aged 19, spinster, daughter of Robert James PECK, surgeon, was solemnised at St. Mary's Church, Newmarket, Suffolk, on the 22nd of September 1842. The ceremony was conducted by the Revd. Thomas Alcock HEDLEY, M.A., the bridegroom's brother-in-law, who had travelled from St. James's, Gloucester, for the occasion. The witnesses were Mary Anne PECK and Thomas HEDLEY. It appears that George Dixon HEDLEY emigrated to Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, in about 1850, soon after his brother-in-law, Dr. George WITT, went to New South Wales, in about 1849. Dr. WITT wrote 'home' in 1851 and referred to 'Dr. Hedley' as follows: 'we have kept our old Servant at present, her husband is now Captn. of a Ship & is gone to China, but we hear from Dr. Hedley that he has met with the common lot of all who bring out Servants, his man & his wife have left him - We have never seen him (Dr. H.) yet, but we hear that he has grown quite stout & strong' (Dr. George Witt's letter to Thomas Barnard of Bedford, dated April 6th 1851). George Dixon Hedley, 'Esquire', certainly lived at Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, in 1869 because he benefitted from Elizabeth Witt's Will, which was made at that time. Yours, etc. Geoffrey in Cambridgeshire, England.

Her poetry, written on scraps of paper, backs of dockets, envelopes, calendars and brown paper are a remarkable legacy of the past. Long forgotten, they are now being compiled into a book, soon to be published by her granddaughter Sue Sedman. Sue Sedman will talk about her grandmother's life and work, and read some of her poems.

    2. Bryan James
    3. Does anyone have any info on what involvement Charles James had with the construction of the railway from Melbourne to Gippsland. Not sure what section or during what period of time but have heard his involvement was quite senior - possibly as a principal or senior civil engineer ? Charles was born in Melbourne 1846 to George James and Elizabeth Maria Beale. George James evidently came from England, was married in 1840 in Melbourne where he was successful in business, went to England in mid1850s and died there at his home overlooking Southampton in 1877. Charles' older siblings were Catherine Ann, Isabella & George and his younger siblings were John Hall, Henry, Edward, Elizabeth Maria, Edwin, Walter & Robert Young (my grandfather). He established a home "Ridgeway" overlooking Lady Bay of Lake Victoria several miles by water to the southwest of Paynesville (now owned by the Stringer family). Charles and his wife Catherine had children Catherine Annie (a talented painter in watercolour and oils), Charlotte Elizabeth (a competent painter), Helen Maude (Nellie), Charles Young (Buff), Madeline Isabella Ethel (Mal), George DeCourcey, John Stanley, Robert Henry (died of wounds in France WW1) and Edwin Halliburton. Many of both generations lived in the Paynesville - Forge Creek - Bairnsdale area and a number of them are buried in an isolated corner of the Paynesville Cemetery. I am interested to find out more about Charles James' involvement with the railway or any good clues on where best to search for that and will greatly appreciate any help. I have other info about this family which I am more than happy to share if you care to contact me by e-mail. Bryan James, born Eagle Point, lived there then Paynesville but Bairnsdale for last 30 years.
