    1. [AVG] Lady needs help
    2. Dorothy Ingram
    3. Can anyone help with this request I received from a lady in England? Dorothy I'm trying to find out about my great uncle Joseph AIRTON, his wife Maria and sons Eddie and George. They emigrated from U.K. to Australia in 1912 and were living at 29 Chomley Street, Windsor, Melbourne in September/October 1912. My late father was under the impression that Joseph later became Lord Mayor of Melbourne but I sent an e-mail to Melbourne city council and they don't know of him. They did say that he might have been a mayor of one of the suburbs of Melbourne, but they had no way of checking that. I've also sent an e-mail to the main library in Victoria to see if they know of him. I work at Blackpool Central Library in Lancashire. If you (or anyone you know) is researching family from this area I would be happy to help.

    2. Dorothy Ingram
    3. Can anyone help this lady. Dorothy I am not requiring you to look up anything but rather advise on how I can help someone. I write from Liverpool,England. Our family has in its possession a photograph of the above Australian soldier taken on Easter Sunday 1918 in France he is with an Uncle of mine Danny Lucas who was from Waterford, Ireland and serving in an Irish regiment. They were both killed in action and are buried a few miles from each other. There is another Australian solder called Smith with them. The three appear to have been good friends. Danny sent the photo to his Mother back in Ireland - he was never to return. John McAwley was the son of a Wm.McAwley of 35 Boyda Street, Burnley, Melbourne. His occupation on his enlistment form is Publisher. I thought there might be someone somewhere who would love a copy of this photo for their family archives. Can you advise how I could go about this?

End of Line! However, if you have any further info on the Ashton line I would be most interested in having a copy. I can, if you are interested give you a comprehensive listing of the Smith family into which Agnes married. 3. Try this: There was snow on Mt. Dandenong in June last year. Gardiner's Creek (where the Doctor was from) still runs from around Blackburn down through Box Hill to Oakleigh/ East Malvern, then up to meet the Yarra around Scotch College in Hawthorn. "Scotchman's Creek" runs into Gardiner's Creek around East Malvern from an area formerly known as Scotchman's Run in Oakleigh. Is there an Oakleigh Historical Society? Marjorie and Linda are probably on the right track looking for a Scott's Bridge along Gardiner's Creek Tom's probably correct that the real error is the transcription of Snowy Mountains. In 1854 they'd be going to get from viewing the Snowy Mountains to a burial in Brighton in two days. Then again there's a Scotchman's Creek near Warburton. The State Library's website http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/slv/mmcatalogue/ has some pictures of a bridge over Scotchman's Creek. There is plenty of snow on Mt. Donna Buang today. Now if in 1854 they called the hills around Warburton the Snowy Mountains ... Great question Marjorie! 3. Hi Lorene, I have traced our ASHTON family back to James ASHTON who was a convict, transported to Tasmania is 1828. I believe that he left a wife and eight children behind in England. I can't be sure what part of England he is from, but I think it was Lancashire. He had four children born in Tasmania to Catherine C(O/U)DDINGTON but I have not been able to find any marriage between James & Catherine. Some of their Tasmanian family later moved to Victoria. There doesn't seem to be enough information to prove any of this and so although it is possible that they are connected to your family, I feel we would have a very hard time trying to prove it. 1. [AVG] LOUGHNAN of Lindenow
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Yvonne and List, John Henry Loughnan was, according to John Adams' "Path Among the Years" born in 1818 in London, and went to Geelong where he was a tea planter. There he met Frederick Jones, and the two were engaged by John Davison Smith, a merchant, to go to Australia and take up land for him. They established the Lindenow Run, and only gave it up after pitched battles, both actual and legal. I have no idea what happened to Loughnan and Taylor. With Loughnan's brother, Henry N. Loughnan, they had a number of other interests in 1840s Gippsland stations, but they were later at Tarraville in conjunction with a store and hotel. Apparently Loughnan was recognised by C.J. Tyers as someone who disappeared from the Western District rather than give evidence in a case of the murder of an Aboriginal person. Does anyone know what happened to Loughnan and Taylor in the end??? Makes you wonder whether they knew each other back then, wives being pregnant together, men working together..all interesting isn't it *smile*. I am also doing Marriages and Deaths, so if you have any of those you would like to add, just email me if you like. And you never know, someone out there may select to do Bairnsdale in the near future:-) Take Care Kind regards Julie. 1. [AVG] Scott's Bridge area?
    2. Leone & John Fabre
    3. Today I rec'd this message from a "first timer" - can anyone help please? any advice would be most welcome. thank you.....Leone ********************************************************************************** I recently received a Victorian death certificate for one Hannah Church, died 16 June 1854. Place of death was described thus: "At a place 5 miles from the Snowy Mountains and near Scott's Bridge." One Robert Stone, Surgeon, of Gardener's Creek, gave the cause of Hannah's death, but doesn't say if he saw her before she died. She was buried at Brighton, in the C of E Church ground, on 18 June 1854. What I need to know, is where Scott's Bridge might have been, and whether the "Brighton" mentioned could have been the place that is now called "Bright". I'm trying to locate the Church concerned, so that I may establish if there is/was a tombstone for her. Can you please help me? I'd really appreciate any help possible, as this is my first enquiry on the internet! Many thanks, Marjorie Marsh. marjoriegm@xtra.co.nz
