Hi Jan, I was just a tad confused re the details Graeme had listed re the parents of Clara SAUNDERS I have been unable to pin down a Thomas SAUNDERS with an Elizabeth KNOWN, so any assistance is welcome. The only Thomas SAUNDERS I have been able to find married Mary Boucher. I guess what I am really after is how Graeme came by Clara being born to Isabella CLARKSON & James McGOWAN and that Isabella had 5 spouses. Are you able to shed any light on how he came be these details. Many thanks Lorraine Bower ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Parker" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 8:39 PM Subject: Re: [AVG] Joseph Samuel Varney for Graeme Ford. > Hi, > I too have Joseph & Clara as GGGGrand Parents and have quite a bit of info > on them what were you looking for > Regards > Jan Parker > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Lorraine Bower" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 7:40 PM > Subject: [AVG] Joseph Samuel Varney for Graeme Ford. > > >> Hi, >> I have just read your posting dated 14th May 2004. >> I'm trying to fit what you have it together with Clara's death >> certificate. >> The certificate is dated 6th May 1872 & claims she was 58 years of age. >> That she was born in Parramatta & her parents were Thomas & Elizabeth >> SAUNDERS.. >> That her spouse was Joseph VARNEY & they had been in Victoria for 27 >> years. >> There are 12 children listed on the certificate. >> One of these is Harriet, she is listed as being 21 years of age when he >> mother died. >> >> Regards >> Lorraine Bower. >> >> >> ==== AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND Mailing List ==== >> To search posts to the list, even back to 1999, go to >> http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl >> and, when asked, enter the list name as AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND >> > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND Mailing List ==== > Have you registered your surnames on the AVG home page??? Hi, I have just read your posting dated 14th May 2004. I'm trying to fit what you have it together with Clara's death certificate. The certificate is dated 6th May 1872 & claims she was 58 years of age. That she was born in Parramatta & her parents were Thomas & Elizabeth SAUNDERS.. That her spouse was Joseph VARNEY & they had been in Victoria for 27 years. There are 12 children listed on the certificate. One of these is Harriet, she is listed as being 21 years of age when he mother died. Regards Lorraine Bower.
Hi Everyone, Peter Lakeman has been beavering away again, and has transcribed details from two pay books for Brickies and Builders Labourers at the Yallourn Power station. There is just under a hundred of them named. So if you suspect you may have family (they are all males) that were engaged in building those huge towers - do drop over and have a look at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Resources/YPS-Brickies.html Then, if you would like to go a little further, there is a reproduction from one of the books at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Resources/YPS-Brickies2.html These books are in private hands, so this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain details not normally available. Rates of pay and dates of employment are included, and often other details. Thanks Peter - I know there was hours of work in this. Linda
Hi Shirley. Thanks for that. Just one thing I'm not sure of .... what is the PRO. Try the PRO first, Lorraine.
HI all, I am a new person to the list. My g x 2 grandparents were Joseph Samuel VARNEY & Clara SAUNDERS of Tarraville. My great grandparents were Jesse HASTHORPE & Esther VARNEY (daughter of Joseph & Clara) of Moe / Tangil area. I am excitedly awaiting the arrival of the copy of Joseph Samuel VARNEY ticket of leave, which he received in 1825. Is there any way of finding out the addresses of families from the 1800's in Tarraville. I feel inclined to make a trip down to have a look see but need to know where to look before I go. Regards Lorraine Bower in Melbourne.
Does someone have access to Probate Index (microfiche)? The PRO says that some local libraries and genealogical centres may have it. Once I have the series and record numbers from the index, I can request issue of the record. The record is for: John WILLIAMS d. 6 May 1901 at Warragul and Ellen WILLIAMS d. 9 Jan 1918 at Benevolent Asylum, Castlemaine Thanks heaps -- Best regards, Julie Love (WILLIAMS) from hot and humid Cairns mailto:[email protected]

Some listers may wonder why the Walhalla Anglican Church was moved to Childers, while the rectory was moved to Thorpdale. Thorpdale already had an Anglican Church (St Marks), which had been moved there about 18 years earlier (in 1898) from Thorpdale South (aka "Old" Thorpdale, aka Narracan West) - a distance of about 3 km. Jim Tilgner in "Thorpdale Narracan Childers Centenary), page 16, relates: "The billiard room of Mahoney's Hotel had been bought by the Thorpdale Anglicans, and so it was that Billy Mills and Jack Robinson hitched their teams of bullocks (18 to a team) to haul the building to its new site, to serve men in a nobler way. What a sight it must have been, thirty-six bullocks straining, a bullocky on each side in a procession down the Thorpdale South hill." Hi! I am researching the Hazlett family from the Stratford / Briagalong area. Other names are Wright, Reeves, Kelly, Stephens (Kooweerup), Christie (Kooweerup & Melbourne) and Woods (Essendon). Edward Hazlett and family arrived at the Stratfieldsaye Estate in 1848 before living in Stratford. He disappeared sometime after 1852, leaving his family behind. Are there any connections out there? Re derelict church at childers:- In the book "Land of our Fathers" by A.E. Clark there is a mention of a Church of England church -- St Stephen licenced on 29th April 1917. Walter Savige wrote: > > Anne, On reading P 125 of Land of our Fathers by A.E. Clark I believe that the old church of England from Walhalla was moved to another site and a smaller church built on the original site. The date of removal is not stated, but it says"The vicarage was taken at about the same time, and I believe moved to Thorpdale. A smaller church was built on the original site at Walhalla and opened on 16th March 1919." (Thorpdale and Childers are only about 4 miles apart) Hope this hekps. Thanks Linda, I'm running off to softball thismorning (and in fact all day) with my daughter, but when I get a chance I'll have a look at the catalogue. The most convenient scenario would be that it is available for inter library loan, but it sounds like the kind of book a library would want to keep under close eye and understandably so. If it is only available in the reference section I could just add the library to the list of places to visit- you know when I finally get down there <vbg> Thank you again, Regards, Liz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Barraclough" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2005 7:51 AM Subject: Re: [AVG] Gell Family > At 11:01 AM 11/02/05 +1100, Liz wrote: > <snip> > >I will certainly write to John as it would be nice to visit the property, > >when I finally get down there. > >The books you mention both appear on the Wellington Shire Council website, > >under Library Services for Glenmaggie. Sorry, I now have word it was seen about 16 years ago, 'thru the window at the school'. It is actually interesting to see it in the Mitchell - the Wellington bibliography was commissioned from the Centre for Gippsland studies to list all books on the shire - and there are holes in the collection which mean some listed there are not in the library holdings. I did actually see Pioneer Child at Maffra the other day in a lot of books being considered for the local collection, and the comment was made that "we don't have a copy of that" - I don't know if that means Maffra or Wellington in general. In the case of the Maffra one, it is will go in the secure local reference collection, and as such is unlikely to be available for inter-library loan. I did try to get the library catalogue/WebPac running this morning, but it seems a bit slow. It is at http://www.wellington.vic.gov.au/Page/page.asp?Page_Id=194&h=1 I think (couldn't get it to come up to confirm). If it has a REF in the call number, it is a not for loan copy, and may not be available for inter-library loan. This goes for any other books that Wellington has as well - eg you might find a copy of Church of Our Fathers there for inter-library loan. Cheers Linda
