    3. To all concerned. Maybe it 'is because I'm the new kid on the block but I don't care. All I know is I have been so welcomed and assisted that it is wonderful. I came to Melbourne from Newcastle at the tender age of 19 ( not telling what year that was ) and would not live anywhere else. I would like to tell the story of how I found out I was a Varney/Hasthorpe descendant, if I may, as I had no idea until I had been living in Melbourne for 14 years. Mum & dad came down from Newcastle for a visit. What to do with them? I know, we could spend a day at the Moe Museum, so with picnic in hand, this is what we did. Mum and I were in the war section when, while looking at a glass case on the wall, she suddenly started screaming. I'm thinking, snake, huge spider, and screaming back at her " What - what - where " Pointing at the role book she said, half yelling with excitement " There, in the book, that's my uncle Reg, Reginald Hasthorpe". I'm ready to humour her at this point when she dragged me back out to the entry kiosk and asked for the local phone book. The rest, as they say, is history. Once again many thanks and I do hope I can contribute, instead of just asking questions. Lorraine Bower.

Variations in style and attitude will be observed over the 35,000 entries contained in this index. Hopefully they will continue with the indexing ...... 3. Dear Anne, Thank you for the wonderful leads, links & info. The book I have be using as a reference is: "Settlers and Selectors" Tangil Hills to Tangil South. A Centenary History of Tangil South by Joan Hasthorpe & J.C.Rogers. It does have reference to Warrigal Creek #1 & Ninety Mile Beach ( Old Varney's Run ). It also has Joseph Samuel Varney owning a hotel in Tarraville. I don't suppose anyone would know if the old hotel is still standing by any chance. I must make a visit to the old Warrigal Creek homestead. Is it sill being used as a home by someone or is the poor thing left sad and alone, I do hope not. 1. Re: [AVG] Tarraville district
    2. Anne Napier
    3. Hello Lorraine Here are some suggestions for information about early settlers in the Tarraville district. Firstly, the Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum in nearby Port Albert has a very informative website http://yarrampa.customer.netspace.net.au/pamm.html which includes links to other pages of interest. The museum has quite a few books for sale. They also have a huge volume called "Clonmel to Federation" which is a database of all the known residents of the area pre-1901. For example, it lists a person and their dates of BDM, arrival in area, what they did, and references to any known sources of information about them. You cannot purchase this volume, but the staff will gladly do lookups for a small fee. The Museum's phone/fax number is (03) 5183 2520. "Touring Around Tarraville" by Yarram & District Historical Society is a small booklet which shows a map of the town (there are nowadays VERY FEW buildings left) and describes who lived where and what they did. Just glancing through my copy, I don't see any of the names you mention, so it could be that your ancestors did not live in the actual township. The Port Albert Conservation Study (1982) by Graeme Butler lists all of the historic buildings and sites in the area (including Tarraville) in a reasonable amount of detail. I don't believe that the study area went as far as Warrigal Creek though. It also provides a good overview of the post-contact history of the region and how it came to be settled etc. I believe that there are only a handful of copies of this book left and that it can be purchased from the Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum in Port Albert. By the way, Warrigal Creek homestead still exists today. The Visitor Information Centre in Yarram (located in the beautiful old courthouse) also has quite a few books for sale. Their phone number is (03) 5182 6553. Some of these include: In Memorium - In Memory of Those Who Died and are Buried In The Alberton Cemetery in the Year of Federation 1901. $6 A Guide to Cemeteries In The Yarram District $3.50 Touring Around Tarraville $6 Glimpses of Yarram Yarram & District in the Year of Federation 1901 $12 "Down the Street" Yarram Yarram 1893 - 1993 $7 Tarraville's Queen of Song (Ada Crossley) by Margery Missen $6 Notes on Gippsland History by Rev George Cox - Edited by John D Adams - Vol IV Gippsland in the 1840s $10 Notes on Gippsland History by Rev George Cox - Edited by John D Adams - Vol III The Alberton District 1842-3 $10 Discover Historic Tarraville $6 There is also a local genealogy society. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ausygs/ They too have quite a lot of these books for sale, and also CDs & fiche etc. Also surname interests and a list of early settlers. The web page for the Yarram & Dist Historical Society is http://home.vicnet.net.au/~ydhs/ It includes links to lots of things, including publications and also the Alberton Cemetery. Hope all this is of some help to you. Regards, Anne Napier

    3. Hi Walter, I knew that some of the Hasthorpe's ventured up north in 1905 after Jesse sold "Sledmere" in Tangil to his son Arthur and that his sons Milton, Reginald & Joseph went north with him. Victoria Lydia followed later to housekeep for them. I made a flying visit up north for a wedding in January this year & quite per chance stayed with friends in Kyogle. I was kicking myself for not having my bit's and pieces with me. That friend is now doing some cemetery hunting, with a camera, for me. How wonderful to make this offer of the diary notes, it will make a great addition to what I have. Many Thanks Lorraine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Walter Savige" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2005 12:09 AM Subject: Re: [AVG] New & posting interests. > Hi Lorraine, > > I am interested in the history of your HASTHORPE forebears. > As you are possibly aware, in about 1905 a number of Gippsland families > (including members of the Hasthorpe, Vary, Graham and Savige families) > journeyed by ship to the Northern Rivers District of New South Wales, > selected land there and became "latter-day-pioneers" in the (then > primitive) region. 1. [Admin] Semi-regular reminders
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Nettiquette and this List Hi Everyone, This is a semi-regular reminder, posted to this list, in the hope that it may make life easier for all. Firstly, this list works on the principle that the free and open exchange of information can only make it a better place for us all to carry out our research. OFF TOPIC POSTS However, to avoid duplication, and to keep the list on topic, posts should be about or directly relevant to the region of Gippsland, Victoria. Posts of a more general nature (including information about websites not related to Gippsland), should be directed to the more general lists eg AUS-VIC and GENANZ. Listers wishing to receive such general posts are also encouraged to subscribe to the lists. If in doubt about the relevance of a post, the list-admin can be consulted offlist at [email protected] REPLIES TO LIST This list is set so that replies go, by default, back to the list, and not the person who posted (unless they have an over-ride set). This means more information is shared with the whole list. However, as some people actually pay for their internet use by download, it would really be appreciated if people are just returning messages with comments like "Thanks Fred" at the top, that they would do so personally, off-list, to the person concerned. You should be able to find their e-mail address on the post to cut and paste it into the address section of your reply. ***CUTTING OLD MESSAGES*** (This is the important one) It is really important in list-life to cut all sections out of old messages before replying to the list. This especially applies to the footers used, and the endless additions sometimes recycled time and time again on the bottom of messages. To do this, you just highlight the unwanted text and hit your delete button. This is important not only for those who pay by downloads, but also those who are on the Digest form of the list, where sometimes you need a cut lunch and a compass to find your way around in the mire of all the repeated messages. Digest readers really love the posters who cut the old messages. SUBJECT HEADINGS Having a relevant subject heading really maximises your chances of catching the attention of those who often do not even open a message unless they know it applies to them. Try and include a surname and a place if appropriate, rather than headings such as "Family History" VIRUS WARNINGS We have been pretty good about this recently, but please keep in the back of your mind that virus warnings and discussion are off-topic, and are not to be posted to the list. While I appreciate they are sent with the best of intentions, often we do not know as much as we think we do, and can end up causing more harm than good. CROSS POSTING Please do not cross post (ie send the same message to this list and another list at the same time) unless there is very definite material specifically about the list area in the post. Apologising about it in advance, as you do it, does not make it okay it just means you know you should not do it, but are going to do it anyway. Thanks for reading to the bottom. The good will of people on the list is appreciated, and your willingness to assist others and keep the list as happy a place as possible for them is much appreciated. 3. Hi Lorraine, John Adams 'From These Beginnings' mentions one property owned by Joseph Samuel Varney between 1844 - 1851: "... There were two Warrigal Creek runs situated north-east of Woodside near Darriman taking up the country to Ninety Mile Beach. 'Warrigal Creek no. 1' with 'Ninety Mile Beach' run, an area of 5,171 ha was taken up by Joseph Samuel Varney in 1844. 'Varney's Old Run' as it was called was taken over in 1851 by Uriah Hoddinott ..." I hope this is of some assistance Cheers, Ian Dowling Darwin, NT [descendant of the Lang family from Tarraville] -----Original Message----- From: Lorraine Bower [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 2:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: New & posting interests. HI all, I am a new person to the list. My g x 2 grandparents were Joseph Samuel VARNEY & Clara SAUNDERS of Tarraville. My great grandparents were Jesse HASTHORPE & Esther VARNEY (daughter of Joseph & Clara) of Moe / Tangil area. I am excitedly awaiting the arrival of the copy of Joseph Samuel VARNEY ticket of leave, which he received in 1825. Is there any way of finding out the addresses of families from the 1800's in Tarraville. I feel inclined to make a trip down to have a look see but need to know where to look before I go. 3. Hi Lorraine, I am interested in the history of your HASTHORPE forebears. As you are possibly aware, in about 1905 a number of Gippsland families (including members of the Hasthorpe, Vary, Graham and Savige families) journeyed by ship to the Northern Rivers District of New South Wales, selected land there and became "latter-day-pioneers" in the (then primitive) region. Some members of those families returned to Gippsland in about 1919, while others remained. I have transcribed a diary written by my uncle Garfield Savige in which he makes a number of references to several members of the Hasthorpe family including Joe, Reg and Milton. I am happy to let you have a copy of parts of the diary if you wish.
