Hi Everyone, I have been asked for help in identifying a photograph of a town, believed to be in Gippsland. Given the collection that it came from, it is believed to be at least pre 1960, and shows industrial works with a large number of nearby houses on either side of a street. Hopefully you can see the picture at http://kapana.blogspot.com/2005/04/can-you-identify-this-town.html and there is a link there where you can access a much larger copy. Any suggestions would be welcome, as it has a few of us baffled. Thanks! Linda

Okey Dokey - I was hoping one of the locals would have a bite at this one .... However, maybe they are busy. :) Jack River is due west of Yarram, not a great distance out, maybe just under 10 kilometres. Alberton is due south of Yarram, but still close. They are both in the former Alberton Shire. Woodside is 20 km north-east of Yarram, on the main road to Sale. I cannot help with any history, sorry, except to say that even then it was probably a prime dairying area. Moves were made for a school in June 1880, and opened in 1886. The school was closed in 1964. I a fairly sure it had a post office as well, but that may have been about all as far as infrastructure. Cheers Linda Kaye wrote: >>Any one know any history regarding Jack River in Gippsland around 1920? >>Is it near Woodside?
Jan,Could the midwife be Martha Mellon (nee Robertson) from Maffra. Late 1800's early 1900. Marion Stothers
Hi Kaye, I can't explain the exact location but it is definitely near Alberton which is on the Melbourne side of Yarram. My father lived there as a child. Hi all, Is there anyone out there who knows the history of the Stratford State School bell? I remember that relations used to talk about it but I can't remember the story. Another silly query - An ancestor was a midwife at Straford. Where can I find out more details? You never know, someone may know something about these subjects! Best Wishes, Jan Woods
Hi all Sorry to be a pest with possible cross-listings, but someone in Spain managed to steal all my email since 14th of this month. I only found out today after contacting Bigpond about no mails for three days so, if anyone has sent me a message since then, would you please be good enough to send it again ? With my luck, this loss will include the message that breaks down a great big wall (:>) Regards and many thanks Irene R
Any one know any history regarding Jack River in Gippsland around 1920? Is it near Woodside? Regards, Kaye
Hi Walter and all those interested in YBLA. I too have a rellie, Mary Ann Denten, who spent time at the asylum and died there in January 1918 at the age of 65. She was buried in Glenmaggie cemetery, which is where her younger sister lived (Glenmaggie that is, not the cemetery <vbg>). Like Elaine, I would also be very interested in any info. on the asylum that you would be kind enough to impart. From info. I have gathered so far, Mary Ann never married and towards the end of her life she spent time in the Geelong Infirmary and the Benevolent Asylum, before being admitted to Yarra Bend. Hilda Gell-Phayer in her book "Pioneer Child" mentions being sent to look after an aunt in Geelong who was ill in about 1904. It doesn't mention the aunt's name, but I believe that it may have been Mary Ann. TIA, Liz
Eric, Your information about the burials at Yarra Bend is an eye-opener for me and probably also for other listers.. The accounts that I have read give the impression that the LA site did not extend beyond the site of the golf course car park. I once made a cursory study of YBLA which showed that some patients were admitted at the request of their relatives who contributed towards their upkeep. When such a patient died the relatives were notified and they made arrangements for the burial at a cemetery of their choice. Other patients were transferred to Yarra Bend from one of the Melbourne gaols. They had been initially abandoned by their relatives, picked up by the police and certified as "dangerous lunatics." When one of those patients died, the Northcote police sometimes arranged for the burial in a (very deep) pauper's grave at Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton. Walter
Hi Jenny, Keep trying with Melbourne. When you finally get someone, they are usually extremely helpful. This was the e-mail address that I managed to make contact on. The name of the person that helped me was Gina Webling. Mind you, that was in 2003. Things may have changed since! (My lot didn't have headstones there either.) He doesn't have a headstone if he's there. He had a child die in 1888 in Carlton so he could be with her - wherever she is! Emails to Melb enquiries are currently bouncing so must exercise more patience! Jenny ==== AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND Mailing List ==== Please do not post virus warnings and chain letters. Hi, I have a death certificate for family member who died at Yarra Bend in 1885. The burial took place at Melbourne Cemetery according to the certificate. Jenny - I can send you if you wish photocopies of literature about Yarra Bend, including photos and plans of the buildings. There is much info about admission and treatment of patients, but no reference to on site burials. Eric - Do you know the location of the graves? Walter
Jenny, Clifton Hill is the suburb just across the creek from Yarra Bend. Have a look at Yarra Bend Admissions, page 11, there is a name that could be Clarkin, admission date was 1893. Parks Victoria web site states there are about 1000 burials at the asylum cemetery. The admission books etc for Yarra Bend LA are kept at Victorian PRO. Inquest files for Victoria are also kept at the PRO and are indexed. Patrients who died at Yarra bend were usually buried in Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton.. The records for burials there are on microfiche (copy at SLV). Walter
