    3. Still looking for contact with any of the above line. Alfred William PASSMORE born 1866, Geelong, married Mary Jane ANDERSON in 1893, probably in Sale or Longford. Mary Jane died in 1896 at St. Kilda after the birth of her second child. Alfred William married again in 1898 - to Lydia Tabitha COTT(E)RELL. There were two more children, the older being Violet Muriel, born 1899 at Richmond. She married in 1913 Alfred Thomas COLES, born 1887 at Yea. The youngest of their four children was Alfred Raymond COLES, born about 1925 and who died at Traralgon in 1961. It's a long shot but am wondering if anyone on this list knows of, or can put me in touch with, descendants, if any, of Alfred. There is a proposed family reunion of descendants of Charles and Maria SMITH of Rosedale at Easter next year and the families mentioned above are all connected but contact was lost many years ago. the older of the tworobbos

    3. The Foster Museum has received two photos found in a house in Reserve Street, Port Franklin, when it changed hands. The subjects are three children, two longhaired sisters and their brother. The photographer's inscription appears to be WH Cummins, Weymouth. On the back is written the name Hope and the date is estimated around 1940s-50s. No one in this district at present can identify them but they will be kept in the museum waiting owners. The current phone directory lists, among others, HOPE at Inverloch, Wonthaggi and Warragul. The Bairnsdale family came from Tasmania and I think Alfred John Howlett comes from this Lazarus Howlett line. My line came from South Australia and settled around Narracan and Mirboo North. I have some details if you are interested and contacts for the Lazarus line. My husband's line of Fisher came from Cumbria. The Memorial stands on the high ground ('Hill 104') behind the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, which is about 2 km north of Villers-Bretonneux on the east side of the road to Fouilloy. The Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is approached through the Military Cemetery, at the end of which is an open grass lawn which leads into a three-sided court. The two pavilions on the left and right are linked by the north and south walls to the back (east) wall, from which rises the focal point of the Memorial, a 105 foot tall tower, of fine ashlar. A staircase leads to an observation platform, 64 feet above the ground, from which further staircases lead to an observation room. This room contains a circular stone tablet with bronze pointers indicating the Somme villages whose names have become synonymous with battles of the Great War; other battle fields in France and Belgium in which Australians fought; and far beyond, Gallipoli and Canberra. On the three walls, which are faced with Portland stone, are the names of 10,885 Australians who were killed in France and who have no known grave. The 'blocking course' above them bears the names of the Australian Battle Honours. After the war an appeal in Australia raised 22,700 Pounds, of which 12,500 Pounds came from Victorian school children, with the request that the majority of the funds be used to build a new school in Villers-Bretonneux. The boys' school opened in May 1927, and contains an inscription stating that the school was the gift of Victorian schoolchildren, twelve hundred of whose fathers are buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery, with the names of many more recorded on the Memorial. Villers-Bretonneux is now twinned with Robinvale, Victoria, which has in its main square an impressive memorial to the links between the two towns. 1. ENSIL - Well I never!!!!
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Well, I never. This is an answer from another list (AUS-MILITARY), which may well be on the way to a solution: Linda just checked the free BMD site in the UK - found an Alfred Charles Ensil who married in 1892 in Stourbridge - found the name Ensil on another site that I know in the same area the late 1800's. Might be that your A Ensil belongs to the same family - is it worth checking into the movements of this Alfred Charles Ensil or contacting the local research centre in the UK to see if they can help with any information? Long shot I know but the only other Ensil's that I have turned up are from Estonia or the name has been used as a christian name. Lynette -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. ENSIL/ANSELL/INGLE????
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, Just to confuse the issue, I have had a look at the Rosedale Shire Honour Roll - and another possibility is A.P. INGLE. I think they were a Flynn family, weren't they? Or somewhere out that way??? If he had some tenuous connection, such as he had worked in the area, so tenuous that, in those times of lesser communication and literacy, someone couldn't quite get the spelling right, that could be another long shot???? I think there are plenty of easy-to-find INGLEs around Traralgon who could possibly indicate if there is any basis at all for a connection. And, even worse (and this is total speculation), we aren't dealing here with a name-change from German, where he was originally something like EINSEL (pure guesswork for spelling)? That happened a lot in the first war, didn't it???? My German isn't that good (well, it is non-existent), but that is another option - whoever it is enlisted under an Anglicised name, but the locals made a best guess at what his name was for the roll??? If you haven't got access in Gippsland I can check at the State Library next week I am having exactly the same problems around Yarra Glen. 3. The NAA shows two entries for this Albert Harold Ansell The first is that he had a wife when he enlisted. Grace Ansell The second entry is from his grandmother Esther Knight who as guardian of his children was seeking assistance. If this is your man then there should be some trace of him and his family near Carrajung. Possibly the birth of his children . Did Grace die or remarry and dump the kids. 3. The Vic BDM indexes shows a possible clue. The death index for 1963 shows an entry for Eva Ansell, aged 67, registered at "YARR" (presumably Yarram). Other index entries show that Eva was a sister-in-law of Albert Harold ANSELL, birth reg 1891 Collingwood. (Eva was wife of Crawford ANSELL. Albert & Crawford were sons of Allen ANSELL & Mary DAVIES.) Commonwealth War Graves site shows an entry for Albert Harold Arnold, died 8 May 1915. However I cannot put any of them in Gippsland - but this is the sort of tenuous spelling you get from someone remembering someone who was at school there for a few years ..... John I don't know whether this will help or not but - My wife's father was an orphan in the care of the Presbyterian and Scots Neglected Childrens' Society from the age of 6 until he turned 18. The society found foster parents for him and he was transferred several times until finishing up at Delvine Park at Fernbank in 1913. He stayed on here and enlisted in WWI in 1915. Fortunately, he returned. However, his birth was registered in Stawell and it wasn't until he married in 1926 that he appeareed in the indexes at Bairnsdale. 3. Hi Listers The Gormandale Primary School has on its walls the Honour Boards from three of the smaller schools - Gormandale, Gormandale East and Carrajung - that have been closed. On the Honour Board which came from the Carrajung School, there are four names which are indicated as killed/died - I am trying to prepare some information on each of these four men - but one is proving elusive. The name is clearly listed as Ensil. A (however the Board was refurbished when it was relocated to Gormandale) - but I can found no ENSIL on any AIF or Commonwealth War Grave Commission listing. The nearest 'match' I can locate is an Arthur ENGEL - but I can find no link between this man, or his family, and Carrajung.
