    1. Index to the Gippsland Guardian
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, One of the indexes I have had sitting on my computer for a few years has had me worried - it is the only copy, and if something happened to me or my computer/backup discs etc .... Too scary to think abut. So I am slowly loading it onto the net. It is for The Gippsland Guardian from its start (or at least the start of known copies) in October 1855, to at this stage 5 October 1857. So it is only two years, but I did index absolutely everything. There are names such as witnesses in court cases, in advertisements etc. It is at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Indexes/Gipps_Guardian/Gipps_Guard.html and there is only A to C up there at this stage. If it keeps raining, and I get a few other things done, the rest will be up in a few days. I am happy for people to download it for private use, and for family history groups, historical societies and kindred groups to download copies for use in their rooms. Just I would appreciate the courtesy of being advised where it is being made available (and so I can refer people to their closest copy), and for those holding copies not to further distribute it without first consulting me. There - that's the end of the legalese bit. If you are downloading copies for public use, please just let me know at [email protected] And, sorry - cannot do lookups from it, but there is a link there to at least where it is available in Gippsland. I am trying to find out if this is the property at Rosedale Vic. I also have another ancestor who had a property called Rosedale in Holbrook NSW. The photo is at the following site. Someone may recognise the house http://www.angelfire.com/film/cook0 Cheers Kate

    2. Marion Taylor
    3. Hi Mark, I have some old home movies shot in Lake King, Metung around 1958-1964 which show a regatta at Metung and many of the old boats. It shows Bulls Shipyard, the yacht called the "Metung", lots of old "woody" speedboats, the Wallagarah? tug boat .The quality is not bad considering the age of the movies. I have had them transferred from the old Super 8 to Video to DVD. I am probably not clever enough to edit them out of other movies but would be happy to send you a burnt copy. I have a few old photos of some of the boats too. My family lived at Metung from 1951-1971, we had an old fishing boat which had been converted to a diesel motor, I remember we called it the "Medic" and I think it was not looked after and was sunk when we sold it and left the area. I would be happy to send you copies of the photos. 1. Gippsland Heritage Journal index online
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, The latest Gippsland Heritage Journal index is now online - for Issue #17 (Dec, 1994). This is the first GHJ to publish "Abstracts", which are short summaries of articles in Historical Society Journals. I have included these, so if you get excited about finding a reference to anywhere between pages 47 and 50, all you are going to able to find is a sort of signpost to another publication. Once again, Terry Goodwin has kindly offered to attend to lookups, once you have a reference from the index. Please e-mail him at terry_goodwin51 [at] bigpond.com and put GHJ index in the subject line. You should then quote the entry and page number that you are asking for more information about. Thanks for doing this, Terry. I will take a break from the index for a couple of weeks - I'm going back to work on surnames pages again, and will be back with issue #18 in a few weeks. 2. Mark
    3. Gday all Fist time subscriber. I am looking to see if anyone has done any work on any of the regattas that were held on the Lakes for many years, especially the Paynesville ones. I have had a pretty good look through web and available books without too much detail. Would appreciate any help or pointers. I am prepared to do the work - but would hate to reinvent the wheel. I have a number of old lakes boats and would love to see the lakes fishing boat races resurected. I am also very interested in any information pertaining to existing (or well known) Lakes fishing boats. Best wishes Mark Reid 154 Newlands Dve, Paynesville 0419 562 659

    3. In reply to Sandra, and anyone else interested. There will be a Gippsland History Conference this year - Meredith is just awaiting some printing and the notifications will be out. It is due to be held at Monash Gippsland Campus (Churchill) on Saturday 26th November. The theme will be something like "The War, Gippsland and the Community". One for your diaries. 1. Orbost
    2. My great uncle Joseph Crane Watt was one early surveyors last century in the Orbost area. In the area behind Orbost on the Delegate rd there is the Mt.Watt walking track which leads up to Mount Watt and both places named after him. Both places appear on local ordinance type maps. As I currently live in NSW but plan to retire later this year and will return to Melbourne, does anyone know if these places are easily reached preferably on foot if not 4 wheel drive. Hope to hear Bruce Watt

    3. Penny Coming in to Bairnsdale as you come down the hill by the hospital turn right at the bottom - the RSL club is on the corner - into Forge Creek road and just keep going. The cemetery is at the end of the long straight stretch, about 1.5 - 2kms from the highway. Be careful when turning off the highway - this intersection is a bad accident spot. 3. Dear Penny (plus anyone else interested), Unless there is an update (and if there is I don't have a copy), yu are referring to my headstone transcripts at the GSV - I stopped them at 1920 (to better get it done!), and the dates you mention are after that time. The book to which you refer would be the Bairnsdale cemetery one by Tim Gibson - it is intended as a walking tour of the cemetery, and lists just over a hundred headstones of the many, many more in the cemetery. So it remains quite possible that there may be a headstone there. Regards Linda At 04:48 PM 22/06/2005 +1000, Penny wrote: >I'll be travelling through Bairnsdale on Saturday. 3. I'll be travelling through Bairnsdale on Saturday. While there I'd really like to see where James and Ann Baulch are buried. I know they were buried there by their death certificates, but haven't been able to locate the locations. The GSV has headstone listings and a book with a map (which I've copied) but no mention of either James or Ann. I suspect this means they don't have a headstone. Has anyone on this list got access to cemetery registers for Bairnsdale? The people I'm looking for are James Baulch, died 7 May 1923, buried 9 May 1923 and his wife Ann Baulch died 6 March 1932, buried 7 March 1932. Ann's will specified that she wanted a fence around their grave. I'd like to see if it's there. Penny
