Seeking information about Edgar Slade, also known as Captain Edgar Slade, R.N.; and Superintendent Edgar Slade (Victoria Police). Slade was the first Superintendent of the Gippsland Police District, based at Alberton in the 1850s, then later based at Sale. He reportedly retired to Alberton and [until contradicted by better information!] is generally accepted as being the first grape grower - wine maker in Gippsland. From: Robert Haldane
Seeking information about Francois (Francis) Edward Blanc, a French-born vigneron who settled in the Alberton District c.1870. His son was Gustave Blanc (1876 - 1959), who was a champion competitive Gippsland axeman. From: Robert Haldane (Who is researching the early history of Gippsland vineyards and wine making).
I am researching McKillop's Bridge with a view to publishing its history on behalf of the Tubbut Community. I am particularly interested in any information regarding the people who worked on the bridge and the road leading up to the opening of the bridge in 1935. Photographs of that era would also be of great value and interest. Rhonda Coates Buchan

Hi Jan Out of curiosity tried combinations of the above on the suggestions you have received but no luck. My grandfather, Archibald Pedersen, was Manager about 1942 but don't have the start and finish years in front of me (not sure that I have that info anyway; something else awaiting research!!!). Somebody in the family may have a photo; who knows? Cheers Viv Viv Martin, PO Box 341, Mentone, Victoria, Australia 3194 Ph.03 9583 5372 ~ Mobile 0419 310 235. Hi Richard Your comment: It would be nice if there was an on-line repository where people could donate copies of their own historic images of places, and where they can be made freely available to other researchers and storytellers. Just dreaming, I suppose. Have thought about this from time to time especially when I find some photographs of my own that I would be willing to share with those of like mind! As time wears on, even images in our own lifetime will become historical; fire, flood and vermin take their toll along with the pulling down and re-building. Things that we have taken for granted just slowly disappear. My folk were from Warragul/Drouin and I have very little in photographic from their era. What is available publicly may or may not have a connection to them and the repositories want/need a large sum rightly or wrongly for their coffers. Problem is, as always, there will be those that take and do not give which sort of spoils the whole idea? Cheers Viv P.S. Do you have any connection to Bendigo? Your name sounds familiar. . There are many on-line catalogues containing old photographs of places. The easiest way to find them is to search Google (select Images, insert the place name and "advanced image search" with "greyscale" as the colour (avoids trawling through numerous modern colour images). Most images are low resolution, and require you to go back to the source to obtain a usable copy. Regretably, many of these sources are institutions, libraries and others. both public and private which claim to promote the study of history , BUT: * often have a long turnaround time * often provide only a CD or hard-copy print by mail (only a few offer to provide a digital copy by email). * Usually want a high price for the image * and despite the image being out of of copyright, also demand a high price for a licence to reproduce the image in print or video, or for the web, even if only to illustrate a personal family history. It would be nice if there was an on-line repository where people could donate copies of their own historic images of places, and where they can be made freely available to other researchers and storytellers. Just dreaming, I suppose.
