    1. [AVG] Clonmel to Federation Index
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, The post about the long-awaited Sale and District Pioneer Index reminds me that yesterday I received my copy of Clonmel to Federation: Guide to People in the Port Albert area 1841-1901. This is a two volume, 754 page compilation (A4 pages, dense print) of notes about people from the Gippsland area that is much wider than Port Albert. For example, I have found two prominent families from Glenmaggie and Stratford well-documented in there at the first glance. It is drawn from newspapers, B,D&Ms, directories, local histories and less easily-accessible records - rate books, school records, church records, cemetery records etc. It even includes details of people enquiring about families. The notes mainly point to further information - it is more an index to sources than anything else. This is a huge and wonderful work by Gwen O'Callaghan and her team, and they are to be congratulated. As a minimum, every family history group in Gippsland should be getting one, and maybe you should go to your local library and agitate for them to get copies too. Family history groups elsewhere in Victoria should also find it useful. So this, with the Sale Pioneer Register coming out soon, raises the question of should lookups be offered onlist. So I thought I should get in first. Groups such as the Gippsland Maritime Museum and Sale Family History Group have outlaid a lot of money and time in this process, and offering lookups is unfair if extensive details are given out, on or off list. It is also a breach of copyright if the entry is transmitted verbatim, on or off list. There is no copyright on facts, but there is on the form in which it is expressed - ie the exact words. So I am quite prepared to tell people, if I am asked offlist, if their family is included in the book. I may even give them some idea how much information is there. But that is all. You can e-mail me at kapana@netspace.net.au So, in the meantime, hie yourself off to your local library, family history group or historical society, and convince them that this is an essential reference. For details of availability, contact Gwen O'Callaghan on gwenoc@netspace.net.au Cheers Linda With hat on as List-admin AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND, just to show I am serious about the copyright / lookup stuff. Please play fair for the Port Albert and Sale people.

    1. [AVG] Gippsland Police Correspondence 1864/5
    2. Wendy Di Tirro
    3. I've got a box on hold at the PROV (VPRS 937/P0000/229) that contains general police correspondence from various Gippsland police stations in 1864 and 65. I've got to go back and photograph the pages I'm interested in, probably next Friday or Saturday. If anyone would like me to do a quick check of this box for them let me know. Examples of what's in this box: Requests for supplies for police stations. Requests for police stations to be established at various places. Information about rewards to police officers. Investigations into police misconduct. Missing persons info Fate of the personal effects of people who died with no relatives Some information can be found regarding criminal cases where they are mentioned in relation to another matter, eg a reward or misconduct of a police officer. Also, if anyone is interested in Constable (Eaphrim?) Irwin of Mt Pleasant (Grant), or Frederick Friend, Henry Cross, William Henry Martin or William Thomas all of Crooked River, let me know Cheers, Wendy

Evidence shows that Alfred Delamore BROWNE and Rachel GLEN had three children - Frederick William 1882 & Annie Margaret Delamore 1885 both born in Vic and Edward Alexander 1894 born in W.A. It is a mystery as to why Fred's birth certificate shows his mother's name as Mabel. The W.A. certificate for Edward shows the mother's maiden surname as GLYNN, which was amended to GLEN in 1917 by a mystery informant named Margaret N. Curiouser and curiouser! Walter
