    1. [AVG] Book Warriors' Chapel now available
    2. Mike Cecil
    3. All, My book, Warriors' Chapel: A Small Town and the Great War, is now available. The town is Bairnsdale. The book is the biographical account of the 123 people who volunteered to serve in the First World War, and who are commemorated on the honour roll of St John's Bairnsdale. It was a long haul: started the research for the book in 2009! A synopsis can be seen here, (along with the errata . isn't there always?). There is also a link to the publisher's website. Although the publisher is in the USA, the book is printed in Australia, hence local postage rates, not international, apply. https://michaelkcecil.com/workszoom/3180045 Regards Mike

    3. Good Morning; In The Rosedale Courier of 7 September 1915, page 7 was the following brief item. At Coppers Creek last week Mr William Pratt and his three year old son were drowned in the Thomson River. The child fell into the stream and the father jumped in to save him. I followed up on this brief item and located a number of more detailed items in the news. The drowning occurred on 31 August 1915. The son was William Frederick Pratt, aged 3 years. The father William John Pratt was the Manager of the Lime Quarry in the area. An intensive search of the river was undertaken but both father and son could not be found. The body of the child was found on the side of the river bank many months later- 14th January 1916. A coronial inquest was held into his death on the 16th January. I have the inquest report. The death certificate for the child was issued on the 18th January. He was buried in the Walhalla Cemetery on the 16th January. I looked for a death record and any further information for the father, William John Pratt, but could not locate one nor an inquest into his death. The grave for his son at Walhalla does not note him so I am assuming he was never found. I was wondering if any list member might have any more information on William John Pratt. Regards, David

Died: 20 June 1922 at Wonnongella(?) River. Senile Decay. The Deputy Coroner ordered the burial. Thanks for your help. 2. Yes - the one at Sale is held and online on Trove from July to, I think, October. That is the first Gippsland one for the Ryan family, in this case James Ryan, who later had the Walhalla and Maffra papers, and others. South Bourke Journal? Warragul? Thank you for that reference - it is much appreciated. While I am here, David, I think the reference to the woman being stretchered out will be to Mrs Guy. I also searched for Crooked River +Funerals and there were quite a few articles turned up but the cemetery wasn't named. One said that there had been a journal published titled 'Crooked River Chronicles" which only lasted 12 months. I found this piece of news in The Age dated 25 May 1866: "In consequence of the great diminution in the population, the proprietors of the Crooked River Chronicle have discontinued the publication of that journal. They are, however, about to remove their plant to Sale, where they will commence another paper, under the name of ' The Gipps Land Chronicle and Crooked River and Stringer's Creek Advertiser.'' They had to wade through the river, which was crusted with ice in places. I am curious to identifie4d the centenarian and in which cemetery he was buried. Life was certainly hard in the area. Any help would be appreciated. 3. They are, however, about to remove their plant to Sale, where they will commence another paper, under the name of ' The Gipps Land Chronicle and Crooked River and Stringer's Creek Advertiser.'' In the Singleton Argus (NSW) , Tuesday 2 July 1912 was the following article. HARDSHIPS IN GIPPSLAND. At the Crooked River, in Gippsland (Vic), the wife of a settler became ill and was ordered to the Sale Hospital. Over 100 miles away. The patient was placed on a shutter and it took six men working in relays to carry her up and down mountains. They had to ford the river four times. From Dargo she was taken by buggy to the hospital and arrived after 20 hours of painful journeying. In the same district a centenarian died last week, and it took 30 men to carry the coffin to the nearest cemetery, 11 miles way. 3. I am seeking information for FREDERICK JOHN HUGGINS - Born 1867 @ Mount Eccles Victoria - with registration made @ Macarthur Victoria. Frederick was the 9th of 13 children born to Frederick Button Huggins [1833 : 1927] and Frances Mary nee Trowell [1834 : 1920]. Frederick grew up at Mount Eccles near Macarthur. As a young adult followed his older brother Albert Alfred Huggins to Gippsland area seeking to obtain a land grant and establish himself as a farmer in this area. He married Harriet Hann [1869 : 1937] - 29th February 1889 @ Bairnsdale. Frederick died 23rd May 1925, with his final resting site @ the Bairnsdale Cemetery. Harriet’s death was the 17th August 1937 and her final resting site is along side her husband. I have a couple of “happy snaps” of Frederick, which I am happy to share. Hoping to be able to learn about my Great Grand Uncle and his family. Cheers for now ................. Gloria.
