    3. Croydon, for those not in the know, is in the top end of far north Qld. The locals and council have updated the place and in town it looks very nice. Local tourist officer, Chris Weirman, is a fund of knowledge. Sadly, around 1888, dunno about earlier, there were heaps of people looking for gold there. Mostly slightly out of town. The water was dreadful and the sanitation even worse so it seems. People died like flies. Guess the Irish survived by not drinking water! Well, my great grandfather did until 1888 when he died of 'local disease', dropsy, and other dreadful things. He left a large family, didn't they all, and his wife. The couple ran the local hotel at Mulligan's Camp, out of town. After her husband died, and then her son, she came to town and ran another hotel. With all those kids! Anyway, eventually she came to Brisbane and lived with her daughter Cecilia Gamble, and died at the ripe old age of about 84 I think from memory. I tramped over many grave sites, found an Irish cross fallen over, flooded and looking dreadful. Could not deciper the name of the person, so 'assumed' it was my great grandfather. Best I could do. Well, it COULD be his...........er.....er.... Because of the hot weather, lack of preservation, people were buried not far from where they died. I am sure he is buried on a property, with about 30 others, at a local area, but cannot have access to them all as the man who owns it does not let people in. Story goes that he purchased the place, knowing the graves were there, and was not supposed to 'fence them in', e.g. he was to make the fence do a dog leg, but of course, he didn't. How can people 'buy' consecrated ground?? Then not let the rellies go there?? Dunno. I am sure if he had to do without the small area where the graves are, and had access to them available, it would not affect his monetary return from the property. He has thousands of other acres. It is not god's own country. It is dry and rocky and I am sure he would not miss the few acres, but........... Sorry I cannot tell anyone about other goldfields. Chris Weirman is the man. There were heaps of goldfields, heaps of immigrants, all round Croydon. If anyone wants to contact Chris, ring the local council and ask for his email. robyn shaw. toowoomba.qld.
