Hi Listers, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me when Marriage certificates began to detail the bride & groom's birthplaces, ages, occupations and parent's names & occupations. I have a wedding certificate issued in Geelong in May 1850 and it is very basic only showing the bride & groom's names, witnesses' names, date and minister's name. It is extremely basic compared to a certificate issued in Ballarat in 1855 that shows all the above information. I'm interested in an marriage that took place in 1851 in Geelong and would like to get a copy of the wedding certificate if it has all the detail but won't bother if it's likely to be a basic certificate like the 1851 one. thanks Brenda Families I'm researching from the Geelong area are: COTTRELL GORELL HANKINSON SHUGG STANTON WALDIE
Hi Brenda, Civil registration commenced in Victoria in July 1853 - any "wedding certificates" before that were church records and generally did not contain the fields that were part of the civil registration. There were church registers that contained multiple entries per page. Sometimes there were full certificates (still church ones and not civil reg) that contained more though they tended to be much later. It's always worth contacting the church to see if they have any more information - I wouldn't count on it for that period but you never know. Regards .......
