Is single, had several years experience as a master, offers English education with Maths & Geometry James JOYCE 27 Sept 1855 application to be a teacher. Of Bellarine, had 9 years experience as a teacher in the National Education Board in Ireland. Apologises for non-attendance at examinations. His notification was kept from him for 6 weeks by the Arch Deacon of Geelong. Is teacher at Church of England East Bellarine school, Post Station, Waterholes. Given second chance, 11 Feb 1856 Thomas HALLIWELL 14 Mar 1856 (unit 62) application to be a teacher, in Jan 1856 gave address as "Mission House Geelong". In Feb 1856 "of Devonchurch near Ceres, Barrabool Hills. He wants a higher salary than the National Schools offer, as he wants to employ 2 monitors to assist him. He has decided to stay with the church school system John A. BOYD 29 Feb 1856 (unit 62) application to be a teacher, currently of Church of England school at Duneed Geelong, but the postion of himself and wife is about to terminate. We taught in Britain, both age 40, with no family. Board replies: present testimonials prior to examination J.P.L. DeNIESE 12 July 1856 (unit 62) application to be teacher at Tarraville. Of Geelong, no other information survives. Third letter 18 Sept 1856, Reports that he has located a suitable building, has visited families, has 30 children promised, believes he can also get Patrons for a new school at Geelong Fourth letter Dec 1856, has applied for Belmont, Geelong school Thomas HYNES 18 Feb 1857 application to be a teacher, of Geelong, has a certificate from the National School Dublin, has not taught before, was sent a form to fill up, but did not proceed Janet HENDERSON 19 Feb 1857, application to be a teacher, lately arrived from Scotland where she was a teacher for a few years. She asks for list of books used in schools, to study. Thomas HALLIWELL 18 Mar 1857, application to be a teacher, was at Chilwell Wesleyan school 17 Feb 1857, sends printed testimonials, wants to be examined, wants to take over new National school at Geelong, but has taken a job as census sub-enumerator, unfortunately same day as exam, after school hours, on 3 census days Thomas William SPENCER 9 April 1857, currently at Pakington House school Geelong, seeks copies of rules for National schools.
