A dairy was about 1km west from High St at the top of the rise on the corner of Scott St - Tompkins dairy - a mikbar and milk supply depot - no cows in my time! Roslyn Rd was sealed but the streets off just dirt as it was a new housing development opening up west of the diary. There was pasture land further south and west with cows. Being on a rise there could not have been swamp in that area I suggest. The land dipped down to a gully/creek where the Highton shopping centre is now. Of course Roslyn Rd also runs east of High St to Settlement Rd - land much lower there. > > In "The Early days of Highton and Belmont" published by the Geelong Historial Society in 1982 there are many mentions of Roslyn Rd and the description of the land. The recollections are made in 1929 of a boyhood spent in the area. A dairy (facing Roslyn Rd and at the rear of David Fishers house whose land occupied a section between Roslyn and Mt pleasant Rds) is mentioned has having disappeared - I think this is in Highton. The land was cleared of orchards, vineyards, hedges and windbreaks to open up for building. After crossing the Colac Rd a swamp is said to have disappeared from near Bowdens flour mill where the aborigines and other locals caught eels - this could be east Roslyn Rd in Belmont. > > I am sure you may be able to get hold of a copy of this book thru the Geelong Historial Society or Geelong Family History Group. > > Carollyn Williams > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Peter MacAuslan > To: AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Saturday, October 18, 2003 6:21 PM > Subject: [GEELONG] Roslyn Rd > > > There used to be a dairy in Roslyn Rd Belmont. > Residents in that area think that a lake ,pond or marsh were there before the area was developed, > Any information? > Peter MacAuslan > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong & District Churches : > http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdchur.htm > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong Family History Group : > http://home.vicnet.net.au/~gfamhist/index.htm > > . > -- John Whitehand Melbourne; AUSTRALIA +61(0)3 93145307 http://www.vicnet.net.au/~whitehaj/welcome.htm Ambition is ultimately destructive--There's only room for ONE "at the top." *** Co-operation Achieves ~ Competition destroys ! ***
