    1. [GEELONG] Barrabool Hills- Coombs & Hoddinott
    2. Dean Anthony
    3. Hi, Does anyone have any information concerning this early Geelong family? Thanks Dean Melbourne First Generation 1. Ann HODDINOTT.1 Born in 1818 in Frome, Someerset. Ann died in Barrabool. Hills, Vict, Australia from Disease of the Spine. Duration of 10 years. on 29 Dec 1884; she was 66. Buried on 31 Dec 1884 in Highton Cemetery Geelong. Methodist Block 2. 253 No other persons in grave. Christened on 23 May 1818 in St John the Baptist, Frome. Religion: C of E. Ann and her husband Henry Coombs and two children, Thomas 1 and Emma 12, arrive in the Port of Geelong on May 14th 1849 as assisted immigrants onboard the Sir George Seymour. They had spent 126 days at sea leaving Plymouth on January 9 1849. Henry is listed as a labourer. A Thomas and Louisa Coombs are recorded as died at Sea. As we haveThomas mentioned twice they must be different people. On the balance of evidence Emma was probably not the child of Henry Coombs. Henry was younger than wife Ann and would have only been 13 or 14 when Emma was born. On both of Emmas Marriage Certificates she gives her fathers name as George Hoddinott. Unfortunatly, Emmas Death Certificate compounds the problem by listing Henry Coombs as the father. On mother Anns Death Certificate Emma is not listed as a child of Ann. Anns headstone in Highton Cemetery reads At Rest & In Fond Memory of our Dead Parents. On 18 Feb 1846 when Ann was 28, she first married Henry COOMBS2, son of Thomas COOMBES & Elizabeth JUKES (1779-1833), in St.Mary, Witham Friary, Somerset. 3rd. Banns. Born on 1 Sep 1822 in Upton Noble. Henry died in Ceres, Nr. Geelong, Australia on 1 Feb 1903; he was 80. Religion: Methodist. Others may be better able to answer this than I, but according to my notes, Henry COOMBS was a bachelor of Upton Noble, of full age, when he married Ann HODDINOTT, spinster of the parish of Witham Friary, on 18 Feb 1846, by banns; Henry signed his name in the register but Ann made her mark. Henry's father was Thomas COOMBS (b. 1784), Stone Mason, and his mother Mary JUKES (b. 1779). Henry was baptised on 1 Sep 1822 at Upton Noble, in the South East of Somerset. This village had a population of about 300 when Henry was born, most of them agricultural labourers. Ann was the third of nine children of George HODDINOTT (1792 -1933) and Mary CLARK (b. 1795). [See the Hoddinott tree on David's other website.] Ann was baptised on 23 May 1818 [?] at Tytherington. Henry and Ann migrated to Australia in 1849 as Government Assisted Emigrants. They sailed on the 'Sir George Seymour,' a vessel of 850 tons, which left Plymouth, Devon, on January 9. During the voyage, the youngest of their children, Thomas (born 1849) and Louisa (born 1850), died and were buried at sea on February 15 and 26 respectively. Ann subsequently gave birth to a baby boy on April 5, who was christened Thomas. The Coombs family arrived at Point Henry, Victoria, on May 14 1849. They remained in the Immigration Depot for eight days before leaving to find their own accommodation in Geelong, where they were still living when Mary and John were born in 1857 and 1858. In the 1899 Australian census, Henry is listed as a farmer of Ceres, near Geelong, Victoria. He died on 1 Feb 1903 and was buried 2 days later at Highton Cemetery, Barrabool Hills. According to the burial records he was a Methodist. Ann was buried at Highton Cemetery on 29 Dec 1884. C of E EE 944. There are about 12 or 13 George HODDINOTTS of child bearing age, if we include Ann's own father George, born 1792. A likely contender, given the Hoddinott tendency to marry cousins, is Ann's cousin George Hoddinott, who was baptised on 12 November 1820 at Witham Friary.   He was the son ofAnn's father's brother, John Hoddinott, who married Maria BUTLER and had Bollow Farm for many years.   Cousin George went on to marry Elizabeth PHILLIPS of Malmesbury, Witshire, and to have a large family.  No evidence of a link though. On 29 Dec 1857 when Emma was 21, she first married Charles Appleby Horsey, son of George Horsey (1807-1877) & Mary Appleby (1810-1847), in Christ Church Moorabool Street Geelong.
