Notes: Mr. James WHITE Snr. (with his white beard), carried the mail bags on his back from the railway station to the Post Office, which was near the school. Later a small Post Office was built and telephone exchange, ran by Mr. Martin White's family. Other WHITE family descendants carried on the tradition of working in the Post Office for a number of years. James WHITE Snr. acquired part of 49B, parish of Bambra in 1874. James CLISSOLD acquired land in 1882, 50A and 50B, in the Parish of Bambra. Raspberry growing was established in the Pennyroyal valley by the DUNSE, NORMAN and WHITE families and vegetable growing was carried out on a large scale. Descendants of the WHITE and CLISSOLD families still live in the Pennyroyal district today. St. Michael and All Angels Church of England, Pennyroyal opened in 1885. It was built on land purchased from George CRABBE. Church closed 1950. Pennyroyal School (No. 1204) opened at "The Park", on the property of James Riches, in 1873. Head teacher was William S. HUNT, who retired in 1910. In 1916, the school was moved from "The Park", to it's new building on a site off Wymbooliel Road, Pennyroyal. The school closed in 1982. Penyroyal Post Office opened in 1887. The Birregurra-Forrest railway line opened in 1891, bringing opportunities to residents of Pennyroyal, to allow transport of cream, vegetables and stock for sale and also obtaining inward goods. The Pennyroyal Public Hall was built on land donated by James Gannon, in 1912. A tennis court was built in the corner of the Pennyroyal school ground in 1922. 1954 - electricity came to Pennyroyal and the small post office closed, with a wayside delivery service for mail and a rural automatic exchange installed. The herb "Pennyroyal" grew on the banks of Pennyroyal Creek, thus getting its' name from the herb. Regards, Shirley.
Hi list - just a brief description of where Pennyroyal is. Pennyroyal is a small farming community, situated between the towns of Deans Marsh and Murroon. The Otway Ranges back onto Pennyroyal. Other bigger towns within half hour of Pennyroyal, are - Lorne, Birregurra, Winchelsea and Colac. Pennyroyal does not have a school, having closed a few years ago. Dairy, beef and sheep farming are the main occupations. There are a few B. & B. type places and raspberry growing in the district, is a tourist attraction. Some of my family still live at Pennyroyal and I visit there regularly. Regards, Shirley (ex Pennyroyal resident).
