I asked the question because this is such a knowledgeable list and I wasn't disappointed. Everyone's input has been appreciated and haven't we all learnt a lot along the way. For those who originally suggested the dance, please feel free to mutter "I told you so"! Just goes to show that Geelong had a thriving social life if the town could support at least 3 men and their families in such a seemingly frivolous occupation. Hello Jenny, Now that we seem to have decided that the Quadrille Office seems to have been a dance parlour, and one of the gents was a musician, perhaps someone with a Geelong historical background can say who would have granted the licence for them to operate. From earliest times (Port Phillip) it was necessary to apply for a licence to run dances and musical entertainments. That could clinch it, if the records have survived!
