Hi Ada, I have the schools list here and would you believe it, there is an "oddity" with the Geelong schools I listed. School 113 is called Geelong Junction, but when you look at the probable inspectorate it came under, it is listed as Altona. The others I listed fall under Geelong/Corio as inspectorate. Is it at all possible that Newport school as you know it was also called Geelong Junction at sometime or another. It is the only explanation I can think of. Thanks for pointing that item out, as it is important. Hi Doug and Ada, And I was just about to send another message when I saw Doug's come through - I shouldn't have said that School 113 isn't in Vision & Realisation - of course it is but it's Newport School as Ada said. The former names were Cambridge; Geelong Junction: and Williamstown Junction. I guess that falls in line with my other question about the list appearing to only contain names with the word Geelong in them. The problem with Doug's list is actually solved completely if you use Vision & Realisation as the reference - all schools are grouped with their correct Education Department Region, and include maps showing the "dots" and locations - quite handy <vbg> And of course, the puzzle re the naming of the Newport School is clearly explained in V&R ...... "The predecessor of 113 was the first national vested school to be established in the Williamstown area, the Cambridge National School, which opened on 16th of April 1856 at the Geelong Junction. etc. etc. ........ In that same year [1886] the nearby railway station took the name of Newport, and some time later the school also adopted this name." ........ and lots more. Regards ...... Hello Doug, Aha!! Newport School was first known as 1. Cambridge (housing estate) 1855-1866 2. Geelong Junction 1867-1874 (The Geelong railway ended at Newport and the station was named Geelong Junction because the Williamstown to Melbourne railway passed through the station. 3. Williamstown Junction 1874 -1881 (Station renamed, so school followed) 4. Newport 1882-2000 (station took name of suburb, so school followed) 5. Newport Lakes 2000- All through 1862 onwards, it carried No 113. I wrote the history in 1981 for the 125th anniversary, but I thought you may have had access to Geelong material that I had no knowledge of.
