Hi Listers, I am a newbie, and wondering if SKS can help me please. Searching for information regarding my husband's Uncle Arthur, about whom we have VERY little information. What we do have is:- Certificate of Discharge from the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force - "medical unfitness - not due to misconduct". for COCK, Arthur, 1st tunnelling company, "BORN at or near the Town of BALLARAT." Arthur's Discharge papers state that he was 45 at the time which was 5/7/1919. So a DOB of +- 1874 for Arthur COCK. I believe Arthur's parents to be Arthur & Mary Elizabeth Cock, nee Hynes. Arthur's bro, my late F in L changed his name by deed poll in 1962 from Cock to Cocks. I hope that SKS may be able to help, and look forward to your reply. Regards, Stephanie Cocks, Hot, Adelaide.
Hi Stephanie, A search of the National Archives web site(http://www.naa.gov.au/) ( produces COCK Arthur, SERN, (serial no.) 8238, POE (point of enlistment) Adelaide, NOK Father, Nicholas. You can order a digital copy of his service record. Takes about 6 weeks, I have done it several times. He is listed on the Nominal Roll for WWI All of which doesn't help you find his birth, but could add interest to his story. Hi Judy, Thanks. Have just done that and found both Arthur and Sidney K. It does shed some light on the father Nicholas, which is at least a confirmation. Thanks again, Stephanie.
If he was a serviceman in WW1 you can get copies of all his papers from the War Memorial in Canberra - I did it about 4 years ago and it cost $15. Really great seeing their signature on the enlistment papers on the copies of the original papers... You should be able to be the date of birth from there, Gillian j> A search of the National Archives web site(http://www.naa.gov.au/) ( j> produces COCK Arthur, SERN, (serial no.) 8238, POE (point of enlistment) j> Adelaide, NOK Father, Nicholas. Hello Stephanie, In Lieut Col Neil Smith's book "What's in a name" aliases of AMF 1914-1919: Cock A.C. # 2789 real name Cox, Clive. May be no help at all, possibly not yours, but check the identity number against your records to eliminate it.
