Hi Rosemary There are quite a lot of references for William REYNOLDS and even more for BACKHOUSE and the firm BACKHOUSE & REYNOLDS. The Geelong Advertiser (Morrow) index has the following for Mr & Mrs William REYNOLDS: 19 Apr 1855 daughter born 17 Apr at Skene Street 20 Jan 1857 son born 17 Jan at Herne Hill 9 Jan 1858 address Herne Hill near F. Bauer and Edwin Wood 15 Jun 1858 daughter born 13 Jun at Herne Hill 15 Aug 1859 daughter born 13 Aug at Herne Hill 5 Mar 1860 selling up, auction of effects Herne Hill 7 Mar (Herne Hill is a suburb of Geelong) BACKHOUSE was practising in Geelong from 1853. Under BACKHOUSE & REYNOLDS in the same index, one entry from a long list specifically mentions REYNOLDS: 20 Nov 1855 Wm Reynolds taken into partnership 17 Nov. and then at the end of the list: 23 Feb 1860 Leaving Geelong, business transferred to Young and Honey Market Square. Under BACKHOUSE Benjamin (Mr & Mrs) in the same index, also a long list, the final entry is: 23 Feb 1860 Herne Hill property effects for auction on 5 Mar Looks like the BACKHOUSE and REYNOLDS families lived near each other and sold up at the same time. Did they do other similar things? Mr and Mrs BACKHOUSE had seventeen children. From the Geelong Historical Journal, the 'Investigator' March 1971, an article 'Pioneer Geelong Architects' by P L Browne and G E Drinnan: In 1860 BACKHOUSE and REYNOLDS returned to England. BACKHOUSE re-emigrated and in 1861 began in Brisbane. There's also a BACKHOUSE diary article by Gladys Seaton in the 'Investigator' Sept 1978 mentioning REYNOLDS and a thesis (University of NSW 1969) by Craig Burton on the architecture of BACKHOUSE which I haven't seen but which may mention REYNOLDS. There are also references to the specific buildings they designed in various conservation studies. The firm had a branch business in Ballarat. If you'd like copies of any of the above in detail please let me know. Couldn't find a photo of William maybe because he left so early. Jennifer >Dear Jennifer, >Thank you so much for that information, I can add it to his name. >William Reynolds was my Great Grandfather. >Could you tell me where you obtained the information ? I wondered if there >might be some archival photos of him still in existence. >Cheers >Rosemary Lyle >British Columbia --
Dear Jennifer, I'm not sure how to say a big THANKYOU. You have given me o much information I did not have on my Great Grandparents. I had sent for a copy of my Grandmothers birth certificate. Number 89 states it was Herne Hill. Residence of William ?Fulton New Town. Entry 90 10 September 1859 is Robert Clarance son of Benjamin Backhouse residing at ? Fulton Herne Hills. So looks like they raised children at the same time. I know the women were not mentioned on the Electoral roll, I guess they did not have the right to vote. On the Morrow Index, would there be any mention of Mary Jemima ? I have rather abandoned all my chores to put all this information in, before it disappears. I can now search for the ship they left on. The diary article by Glady's Seaton, would be interesting, if you could have a look at that when convenient. I will go off and digest this information.
