Hello, I cannot locate a birth entry in the Victorian BDM index. I have tried via Pioneer Index on microfiche and also via Maxi on-line. I know the name, parents names, year of birth (1880) , place of birth (Geelong) and a registration number. However when these details are entered, no entry comes up. The name is also mentioned on the mother's death certificate along with the age of the person. Can anyone help? Many Thanks, Peter _________________________________________________________________ Hot chart ringtones and polyphonics. Go to http://ninemsn.com.au/mobilemania/default.asp

Hello Peter, Perhaps the registration number is local (for Geelong). On certificates this number is often shown in the left gutter of the certificate. These certificates were sent into Melbourne every three months, where they were first arranged by the registration district, alphabetically. Then they were centrally numbered in the centre gutter of the certificate. It is this number which is used in the indexes you use. The Geelong number becomes redundant. Suggest you leave out the registration number in your search, as you probably have the Geelong one. Maybe then the search will work. I always search on mothers maiden name and leave out the family name. That way you get all the children with that mother ... illegitimate, wrong spellings in other names, second families, etc. Hope that helps Regards Ada At 11:40 15-01-04 +1100, you wrote: >Hello, > >I cannot locate a birth entry in the Victorian BDM index. >I have tried via Pioneer Index on microfiche and also via Maxi on-line. > >I know the name, parents names, year of birth (1880) , place of birth >(Geelong) and a registration number. >However when these details are entered, no entry comes up. > >The name is also mentioned on the mother's death certificate along with >the age of the person. > >Can anyone help? > > >Many Thanks, > >Peter > >_________________________________________________________________ >Hot chart ringtones and polyphonics. Although I don't need help locating the Birth certificate I would like to say I do not reley on Maxi. I have my g grand father's birth certificate and have all the correct numbers, but he does not come up on Maxi, nor does most his family. I tried many different spellings along with just the year and ref. number. Maybe some registrations are missing. I did find mine not on the CD, but on good old fashion fishe. Mine is not from Geelong, but South Melbourne so it is not just the Geelong area. Food for thought.
