Many thanks for your reply, Pam. All I know is that he had a grocerery and other provisions store, first in Autumn Street, and then in Mercer Street. He got into financial difficulty and shot through just before bankruptcy proceedings were launched in sept 1859. His wife had another child in 1865 (in Geelong), so he may have returned later. The child was always known as his, and whether he was or not, for the story to have been credible he must have been known to have been around in 1865. After that there is no trace of him. There is the possibility that he was or became a seaman, but I don't know of any sources for that occupation. If you have any ideas, they would be most gratefully received! Alwynne, sounds to me like he may have changed his name if he was on the run so to speak from his debtors. What was his mothers name? or his wifes he may have used that or just taken one he fancied. Do you know his parents I could try a Vital records search on them possibly.? where is the wife buried? he could be there also. I assume you have the 1865 childs birth cert. It usually gives the fathers occupation too and who was the informant. Of course 1859, he may have taken off for the goldfields to redeem himself too. good luck Linda
Thanks Alwyne - will keep my eyes open for him!
