Hi Peter, I've made some changes to my notes to include the two children born at sea. My information has come from various sources and mistakes have crept in and multiplied. Some of the birth dates may be baptisms dates and some of the death dates may be burial dates. The only way to be 100% is to purchase all the certificates from BDM and then to check them off against all other sources. Geelong Cemeteries trust lists Mary Ann as Sarah Ann Coombs. Perhaps she was known by two names. We seem to have two Marys or two Sarhas going at the same time. In due couse I will try to get to the GSV and have alook at the cd-rom of BDMs. Thanks Dean Name: Henry COOMBS1 Birth: 1 Sep 1822 Upton Noble Death: 1 Feb 1903 Ceres, Nr. Spouse: Mary Elizabeth ( Lillian ) Beck Marriage: 1886 Notes for Henry COOMBS Others may be better able to answer this than I, but according to my notes, Henry COOMBS was a bachelor of Upton Noble, of full age, when he married Ann HODDINOTT, spinster of the parish of Witham Friary, on 18 Feb 1846, by banns; Henry signed his name in the register but Ann made her mark. Henry's father was Thomas COOMBS (b. 1784), Stone Mason, and his mother Mary JUKES (b. 1779). Henry was baptised on 1 Sep 1822 at Upton Noble, in the South East of Somerset. This village had a population of about 300 when Henry was born, most of them agricultural labourers. Ann was the third of nine children of George HODDINOTT (1792 -1933) and Mary CLARK (b. 1795). [See the Hoddinott tree on David's other website.] Ann was baptised on 23 May 1818 [?] at Tytherington. Henry and Ann migrated to Australia in 1849 as Government Assisted Emigrants. They sailed on the 'Sir George Seymour,' a vessel of 850 tons, which left Plymouth, Devon, on January 9. During the voyage, the youngest of their children, Thomas (born 1847) and Louisa (born 1848), died and were buried at sea on February 15 and 26 respectively. Ann subsequently gave birth to a baby boy on April 5, who was christened Thomas. The Coombs family arrived at Point Henry, Victoria, on May 14 1849. They remained in the Immigration Depot for eight days before leaving to find their own accommodation in Geelong, where they were still living when Mary and John were born in 1857 and 1858. In the 1899 Australian census, Henry is listed as a farmer of Ceres, near Geelong, Victoria. He died on 1 Feb 1903 and was buried 2 days later at Highton Cemetery, Barrabool Hills. According to the burial records he was a Methodist. Ann was buried at Highton Cemetery on 29 Dec 1884. Migration details from: Florence Chuk (1987) The Somerset Years: Government Assisted Emigrants from Somerset and Bristol who Arrived in Port Phillip Victoria, 1839-1854. Ballarat: Pannard Hill Publications, and from Australian colleagues. Notes for Ann HODDINOTT Ann and her husband Henry Coombs and two children, Thomas 1 and Emma 12, arrive in the Port of Geelong on May 14th 1849 as assisted immigrants onboard the Sir George Seymour. They had spent 126 days at sea leaving Plymouth on January 9 1849. Henry is listed as a labourer. A Thomas and Louisa Coombs are recorded as died at Sea. On the balance of evidence Emma was probably not the child of Henry Coombs. Henry was younger than wife Ann and would have only been 13 or 14 when Emma was born. On both of Emmas Marriage Certificates she gives her fathers name as George Hoddinott. Unfortunatly, Emmas Death Certificate compounds the problem by listing Henry Coombs as the father. On mother Anns Death Certificate Emma is not listed as a child of Ann. Anns headstone in Highton Cemetery reads At Rest & In Fond Memory of our Dead Parents. Sources 1. Banns. Banns read at Witham Friary 11,18 & 25 Jan. 1841. 2. Jeanette Hellmstrom, Australia. An HODDINOTT & Henry COOMBS emigrated "Sir George Seymore" 1849 to Victoria, Australia. Dont these families love to test our deductive powers. Just wonder if Emma may have been a sister not daughter, possibly went as daughter htough to get immigration? Being 12 was almost an adult in those days. This would explain her Birth & marriage certs and who informed on the death one, they can often be wrong as the person cannot say and the informant is often grieving or not neccessarily in possion of full facts.
