    3. While extracting names of women to appear in the Geelong Police Court, I am now finding sentences giving 'hard labour'. Does anyone have any idea what jobs women were given in gaol during these times (1860's). Thanks, Pam Jennings

    3. No I don't, but a lady who I believe to be my great great grandmother died in gaol in Geelong in 1855. She was in for the "standard" six months respite for vagrancy. As a result of your studies, are you aware of a Rachel Newton (also known as Newtown)? I am trying to obtain information on this lady to clarify if she is my ancestor.
