    3. Dear Linda You have raised a question which is I think interesting to us all. A couple of books I have recently read may be helpful (inter library loan) * Historical Records of Victoria Communications, Trade and Transport 1836-1839 Volume 4 Edited by Michael Cannon *A History of The Port Phillip District Victoria before Separation by A. G. L. Shaw Judy Qld ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Edwards" <edwslsj@alphalink.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 6:13 PM Subject: [GEELONG] re immigrants > I recently had a question asked about why people chose to move to the > locations they did on arrival in colonies and what led people to choose > areas to settle in. > > Does anyone know if the govt has any records or recommended employment to > certain squatters etc? 3. Hi Linda, Judy was right in suggesting those books and if you really look into it there are 100s of books that could be added to the list depending on what aspect you're looking for. Two things to remember - there were reason why someone LEFT one country and reasons why someone WENT TO another country. examples - the Irish Potato Famine. So much depends on WHEN it happened (sorry if the caps sound like shouting - they're just there for emphasis! <vbg>) Different colonies in Australia had different reasons at different times for encouraging certain types of people ....... NSW needed lots of women at some stages, VIC needed family settlers to open up the land, etc. etc. Why did a lot of people settle around Geelong / Bellarine Peninsula etc. .... because that's where heaps of ships from the UK landed them! If your ancestors were assisted immigrants then there are two books I would strongly recommend you reading ....... both by Keith Pescod. "Good food, bright fires & civility : British Emigrant Depots of the 19th Century" and "A Place to Lay My Head : Immigrant Shelters of Nineteenth Century Victoria" published in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Another set of three books definitely worth reading on this subject - published as part of the Victoria 150 celebrations - Professor A.G.L. Shaw was chairman of the management committee for these books .... "The Victorians : Arriving" by Richard Broome "The Victorians : Settling" by Tony Dingle "The Victorians : Making Their Mark" by Susan Priestley Hope that helps ...........
