    1. [GEELONG] Re Searching for William STEWART & family in the 1860's
    2. Joan
    3. Hello listers I have found my gg grandfather William Stewart b Banff, Scotland, 1815 and his wife Helen nee Grant and their 2 daughters Mary & Frances emigrated to Geelong in 1853 on the ship Childe Harold. William died in 1869 as a result of an accident. Helen was William's 2nd wife but I am descended from his first wife Jean Paterson who died in Banff Scotland possibly at the birth or just after the birth of their son Alexander born November 1840, my great grandfather. Alexander did not come to Australia with the family, [he would have been about 13] but he did come here prior to 1873 as he married in the Presby. Church Sale, Victoria [shown as a farmer in Sale] but I cannot find his entry into Australia nor where he may have been living in Victoria. I have not been able to find him on the 1841 or 1851 or 1861 census records in Scotland. However on Alexander's death record in 1927 in Sydney, it states he was in Victoria 35 years and 45 years in NSW [he moved to Orange, NSW where he was a telegraph linesman about 1878.] This means he must have been in Victoria about 1847 when he was only 7 years old. This is only approximate as the years do not tally up with his death date, also I know that the information on death records is only as good as the person who was the informant knew about the person. . Are there any land records or any type of records which may help me with my search for Alexander please. He was still a farmer in Sale Plains in 1876. Thank you for any assistance. Joan

    3. Joan there is a mailing list for gippsland area which covers Sale, maybe someone there could help more. Also this site has the records available and more. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/index.html this has some info and the look ups available check out wellington shire which sale falls under. There was a lot of coastal traffic, he may have landed in another state even and then gone by coastal ship and not all records survive or even gone overland . hope it helps. linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2007 4:59 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Re Searching for William STEWART & family in the 1860's > Hello listers > > I have found my gg grandfather William Stewart b Banff, Scotland, 1815 and > his wife Helen nee Grant and their 2 daughters Mary & Frances emigrated to > Geelong in 1853 on the ship Childe Harold.
