Hi Everyone, Recently I obtained a photo of my G G Grandmother, Catherine (DELANEY) TANNER who spent about 9 yrs in Geelong. It appears to be taken early in her life from appearance & her clothing. Her left hand is placed on a book, appearing to indicate that it was a wedding photo, but she married in 1842. Is that a possibility? Hope someone can help, please, Rosalyn
Hi Rosalyn I have been sent a copy of my ancestors across te hbottom of which is written "START ON THE LAND 1850 VICTORIA" The date has been overwritten and as I only have a photocopy of a photoo it is hard to make out what has been overwritten but I think it perahaps 1861 which would be more in line with the guessed ages of the people in the photo. As this family did not arrive in Australia until 1853 the 1850 is not true. 1861would be more accurate. A quick internet seach revealed a site "The history of Photograpy in South Ausrtralia 1845-1915" users.chariot.net.au/~rjnoye ยท This would seem to indicate that your photo could indeed have been made close to 1842. Some internet research should provide some ideas about dates and palces. Your links were interesting Rosalyn, I too have photos I am trying to date. The album came from geelong area but the photo's were mainly from uk and melbourne. I found a number of photos with very similar backdrops and poses and I am sure the same props at times. also the clothing was similar to several shown, a great help in placing these I hope. They also mention that the process took so long hands needed to rest on something to keep still and sometimes even a stand was used to hold the head still!. No wonder some expressions look fixed and uncomfortable. great help Linda
Hi Linda, Sorry to take so long to reply - car repairs to be done, visitors to collect and entertain, etc. Re the props, backgrounds, and clothing in old colonial photos, it is my understanding that the backgrounds for "studio" photos were portable, often painted backdrops, such as would be used in the theatre. There were a few special pieces of furniture, eg chair, table, plant stand, etc. I believe that the photographer would have some pieces of clothing to loan the client if necessary, eg a jacket, to give the impression of a successful life in the colonies for photos sent "back home".
