    3. Hi Suzie (and Ada), Firstly the photo that I have received is a digital image, from a copy of a copy if I am not mistaken. I cannot see any impression of a photographers mark, and do not know what the frame, etc, was like. Catherine and John Henry TANNER were actually married at St Francis in Melbourne, so the photo may have been taken there. Catherine is seated, looking directly at the camera, and can be seen from her lap up. The light source appears to be from the right front of the photo, so shines more on her left side. The background is a heavyish but light reflective material. She could be sitting near a window sill, and having a small table with a floral patterned tablecloth on her right hand side and to the rear of the photo. There are horizontal lines from the flat surface to top of photo, looking like pleated drapes or wall-papered joinery. Catherine's dark hair is centre parted and severely drawn back, and she is wearing a white(?) bonnet that ties under her chin with with long 3 inch wide ribbons that fall to her waist. The bonnet brim stands up from her faceat the top and tucks right in under her chin at the bottom. It is filled with what appears to be heavily frilled lace to frame the face. The back of the bonnet has a frilled, lace-edged extension that covers the back of the neck. It has a stripe of dark (black?) narrow ribbon which would indicate to me that she was coming out of a mourning period. She was 20 when married, and her rather austere face does not seem to show the ravages of time, ie no wrinkles, etc. Her dress appears to be silk or taffeta perhaps, in what appears to be a gingham checked pattern, of dark and mid-tones. The skirt is heavily gathered from the waist, but the bottom can't be seen. The sleeves are very full from just above the wrists to below the shoulders - not like leg o'mutton sleeves that are full higher up the arm. The gathering of the sleeve appears to come from a dropped shoulder line. She is wearing a dark coloured, very finely woven, fringed shawl that either shows the gingham of the dress or is itself of gingham checked in darker shades. This may be attached to the dress, and covers the back, upper arms and front of the body, finishing above the waist. Catherine has a light coloured, shorter handled parasol leaning against her legs. It appears to have a floral pattern close to the rim of the parasol. The handle may be one of the ornamental bird heads ones, or a know, but it has a tassell handing from it. She is holding what appears to be a heavily embossed leather bound book - approx 6 X 8 inches. A plain ring is just visible on the ring finger of her left hand. I hope this helps to define it a little more. It would be great to even find folk with photos taken with a similar background, etc. Rosalyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susie Zada" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2007 6:54 AM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Earliest Victorian Photos > Hello Rosalyn, > > Hopefully Ada might add her experience / knowledge to this question but if > you believe this to be a photo of you gg-grandmother on her wedding day > (1842 in Geelong) then I think the answer is definitely highly unlikely > (or > perhaps close to impossible!). > > For a more informed answer you need to describe the type of photo - > daguerreotype, CDV etc. and whether there are any photographers names etc. > on the photo surround (front or rear). > > Regards ..............
